Completely agree Daniel Cortez. Guitars are tools. They are beautiful tools, but they are tools. Innovation in guitars must be about sound and playability. This represents everything I dislike about Gibson, "exclusive", "master artisan collection", "$60,000", it's like they're focusing on making NFTs and investments for elitists with too much money rather than tools to be played. Just compare it to what fender has been releasing and actually trying to innovate with the meteora, player series etc, focusing on making tools accessible to everyone for making music rather than instruments made to look like they have soul but have never been near a stage and probably never will because of how much they are charging for them. Gibson started out making amazing mandolins and guitars, instruments made to sound good and be played rather than to hang on a wall in some posh hedge fund manager's City apartment they only live in for 2 weeks of the year. Any instrument is just a few pieces of wood and some metal and plastic, it's the music someone makes with them that makes them special, not the way the metal has been artificially rusted.

That's just today's guitar market having learned from the vintage guitar (and premium car) craze how to turn cheap wood into treasures: What started out as innovative instrument makers is now owned by private equity firms with a focus in generating as much money as possible with products they have no actual relation with. Their focus isn't so much musicians but investors and collectors (which is almost the sole purpose of the F+G "custom shops"), they have created a market for that and developed it to a degree that the finite supply of collectible vintage guitars is no longer hindering their dreams of turning random products into an alternative currency gaining value, more stable than gold. The instruments they make for the average chump for premium chump money at highly cost-effective mediocre chump quality are just there to make these bold money-generating dreams work without further investments.

I've had a love-hate relationship with Flying Vs for years. My first electric guitar was a Hondo V copy. I've had a couple of Gibson Vs as well as an Ibanez V from the 70's (sold decades ago). So it's hard for me to say if I'd want one of these without playing it first. How a guitar plays and sounds means more to me than any collectability aspect. I'm also one who isn't shy about modifying guitars if they are close to what I like, but could use some tweaks. Scala is also known for chambering most of his Les Paul and Tele style guitars. Pete Thorn has one and has talked about it a number of times. Pete also has a Gil Yaron "Burst" that is close to a counterfeit Les Paul. They are still incredibly expensive, but less than many of the Gibson Custom Shop models. Yaron now only builds Les Paul-"style" guitars that aren't quite the same shape. Years ago Pete mused about how he though Gibson should hire Yaron to build limited edition Les Pauls similar to his copy.

I’m pretty sure Richard Fortus has or had several of Leo Scala guitars. I think at least one of them ended up being sold by Chicago Music exchange. But, the one thing you didn’t note at the beginning of the video is how the tops of his personal build guitars are on stilts & not completely “connected” to the back so there’s a space there. I distinctly recall seeing a guitar with a lot of metal on it with the top raised above the back in an episode of Rig Rundown with Fortus on Premier Guitar’s channel. To answer your question do I like these? Yeah, I think they’re really cool. Would I buy one? No, no I wouldn’t put that kind of money into them I would rather put that kind of money into an authentic vintage but I would certainly be proud to own one if someone gifted it to me. I just wouldn’t buy it myself because as I said if I had that kind of disposable income I would just buy real vintage. I just can't get into the relic finishes. I was always too poor to afford anything new and shiny. So now that I can just buy a Les Paul standard off the rack I look for the cleanest high gloss finish I can find.

This artisan thing is truly beauty. People are saying these aren't worth it. Real Jewels? I think maybe that they think Epiphones are as good as Gibsons. I wouldn't know right to the point of it, but Epiphones are not the jewel themselves. Sure they feel good, but without the plek and the burstbucker, what? It's any other guitar. I wouldn't have minded a custom Fender. But yea, those are some sic looking Flying Vs.

I agree with other commenters. Stop with the relic process! You expect me to pay a premium for a guitar because you made it look worse? That’s like buying a vintage muscle car at auction and crashing it on purpose to make it look more “authentic”. The stupidest trend in guitars. Just. Stop.

Any word on if Leo Scalla will be involved in the Triumph and Harley Davidson collaboration with Gibson. I read more or less Gibson is doing a reissue of the 59 Les Paul. On the Seraph the Pontiac kind of and would make more sense if it would be the Original Indian logo from that motorcycle company. I still think that Gibson should follow Fendee and do some player series guitars that a good no frills workhorses and minimally costly. I do like the designs That Leo Scalla has done on the Vs not sure which I like the most.

I used to love Gibson's. I have a 57 Les Paul Special, 69 SG Standard and a 2008 Les Paul Standard. The thing is I mostly play my 1999 Ibanez SCR 220 - List was $649. Think I paid $389 from Musician Friend. I appreciate ART, BUT ...... These are not made for me. For Sale : 1 57 Les Paul Special $150K - 1 69 SG $80K - Buy both and get the 2008 as a Bonus.

Scala's guitars can be bought for like $5-6k, lots of used ones out there. They're beautiful, some of them are a bit TOO steampunked, but some are just kickass. Gibson can suck all the money they want out of buyers, I'm happy for them. That said, these guitars are ridiculously overpriced. At least 7-8 times what was put into them.

The hybrid is my favorite, I hate bigsbys and especially on a V so you can't straddle it at all. The V is for standing up, but i'm a lazy bastard. Also the way the tailpiece and string through thing combines to be a gigantic brass V-shaped block is so badass on the hybrid!

I was wondering when you were going to say something about these. I’m torn, I don’t like how grungy and dirty they look, but I do appreciate them for what they are. I think I would go for the seraph because it looks special, the hybrid 2nd. I think I would like to see what Gibson employees would do with them. I bet they have some fantastic ideas of what they would do, given the chance.

I like the $60k guitar because of its color and style. Also it had some very interesting aging on it. It looked like it was in your grandpa's basement and you pulled it out after 50 years. Idk if anyone noticed but it looked like "mold" on the back of the guitar.

I really like the idea, people have to understand these are not guitars meant to be played, these are pieces of art, which is WAY more expensive for shit that doesn't have soul or work put in. Gibson should make they designs more accessible, but have at least some QC regarding the brands that manage to get the rights to use their names and shapes, so that we get "authentic" instruments at a lower cost, imagine a bunch of Epiphones where the only say Gibson has is either they judge tye guitars worthy or not. That would be nice and make people happier, instead of licensing to boutique builders and luthiers, Which, do not get me wrong, it is very cool to see it and I hope we see more stuff like this.

I think it's unfortunate Gibson is using the word "collection" for the Mod Shop output since its all one-off refinished of B stock, while the other collections are designed as such. I also think Gibson is starting to lose focus on the bulk of people that buy their guitars, venturing into these high end collectibles. I go shopping at CM E regularly, and there is never anything interesting in general market Gibson offerings. It’s like you died and went to sunburst hell. It’s like the worst of the profiteering instinct is taking over at the expense of the bread and butter business, which will doom Gibson if they don’t focus more on their core audience. I would knock out the one pick up models from any selection because it reminds me too much of that unfortunate Metal period where Gibson was trying stuff like this. It just looks wrong. I do like how he reimagined some of the hardware, which I think should be offered on regular models. That leveled tailpieces rules. So to answer your question, I wouldn’t buy any of these even at regular prices. I can see how a movie studio might want and old looking guitar, but the whole relicing thing leaves me cold.

I like the one with the Indian motorcycle brand logo on the pick guard, at least I think it’s their logo. I know some of the names of the Fender Custom shop master builders. The only one I know from Gibson is Murphy. I have a team build Fender Custom shop Strat and Ron Thorn signed my COA. I am sure he signed a lot of them but I have always thought it was cool that he signed mine. He seems to be really chill and obviously very talented.

You treat guitars almost exclusively like a commodity. Guitars are much more than that. They're more than their colour or logo or pick guard design. They have a heart and a soul that only develops when they're in the hands of a player who can make use of the basic instrument and breathe life into it. This is something your channel totally misses the mark on. I guess you've found your niche and a way to earn a living and all the power to you for that, but in my opinion, and in spite of your vast knowledge about guitars, you really don't know what a guitar is.

Guitars can be whatever you want them to be. My channel is about showcasing guitars and teaching their history and sharing what makes them special. This is something that is easy to portray online to a large audience. There are enough guitar playing channels online and I’ve carved this niche for myself. I can’t bring the best out of them musically - no , but I can bring models out into the limelight so gifted musicians like you CAN learn about them - pick one up - and then play it until the cows come home

@@Trog Good answer. No sarcasm. How do you respond to the criticism that you drive up the price of guitars by purchasing them and then reselling them at a considerable mark-up, thus placing them out of reach for many guitarists?

@@Mo_Taser He's responded to this specifically before in the comments numerous times. Trogly completely denies that he does anything to adversely affect resale value as according to him, he operates his business the exact same way as every other guitar reseller. I like these in the artisan aspect of them, if I was wealthy I'd buy one, it will probably increase in value. I'm artistic myself and wouldn't mind creating custom art guitars that played and sounded great that are also comfortable but visually striking. That would be fun. I also beautiful woods and finishes of all types, guitars to me are all work of art that are used to create art. Thanks Trogly great show, my imagination is now working overtime on ideas.💡
