My favourite one is Five Parsecs from home, which is now being published by Modiphius for its 3rd version. Aimed squarely at solo and coop play, you build a ragtag crew for an old ship and try to make your way in a sprawling procedurally generate campaign world. Still blown away by how good it is. Most things by Nordic Weasle are great though. Others I like are Star Breach and Stargrunt 2.

One Page Rules is an interesting case study in indie games designed to be competitive. It seems like they operate with the idea of modernizing and streamlining GW type games. So by nature, their games lend themselves well to competitive play. But OPR is an indie shop and at least in the US I'm not sure there's a tournament scene currently or if there ever will be one. So you see them adding lots of campaign and narrative supplements to their games that appeal to the small gaming group setting.

I view the "popular" games to be kind of like fast food. Many people would rather just have that than have to try new things. Thats fine, but It can also be a fun experience to go eat at a hole-in-the-wall diner sometimes....but the Defenders Of The Status Quo™ always shout about how its "not supported" or you cant take a random x points army to a store and find a game. While those may be true - any set of rules is playable if you have someone to play with (or even solo in many cases). And if you have a vision of a game - write it. Don't let The Defenders™ stop you or talk you out of it. Stop believing that miniatures wargaming is the "so-and-so Hobby" because it is not. It is a shared hobby that is not owned by any single company or franchise no matter how much they claim otherwise. They did not invent it nor do they own it.

Thanks for producing this episode! My company, Spectrum Games, has been around since 2001. Though we traditionally publish RPGs, we finally published our first tabletop miniatures game, Urban Manhunt in early 2019. DTRPG's print-on-demand service has become really top notch. While it lacks some of the options available to traditional publishers, I've been truly happy with the quality. As with most indie miniatures games, we have gone the miniatures-agnostic route, offering a system for creating your hunter's game stats to match the miniature you wish to use. I'm also glad you mentioned the risks indie companies take, as I've seen that a great deal. We definitely took some risks with UM, namely the game dynamic in which the players' hunters don't directly fight each other; rather, they compete by killing "crims" for points; whoever has the most points when the game ends wins the match. And the game rules control the actions of the crims. www.spectrum-games.com/urban-manhunt.html

Osprey is an interesting one, because they are a huge printing company - but their game section is actually from designers who submit games for consideration. Unless something has changed, Osprey used to have a web page where they laid out the requirements to submit a game for publishing. It had to fit into their standard 68-page book format, not require extraneous components, etc. Now they occasionally take a chance on something like Frostgrave and give it a hardcopy release/expansions, etc. But they opened an avenue to independent designers. Too Fat Lardies had a similar program which was like a mentoring program for game designers, etc.

Not tabletop, but for video games, game engines and other tools often have an Indie licensing plan these days, which is limited by how much revenue a company makes in some amount of time. For example, the Unity engine offers a license at less than 1/4 the price " if revenue or funding is less than $200K in the last 12 months". I've seen similar cutoffs for other tools as well, so somewhere around there might be a good watermark for what counts as indie.

The indie games are a bit like that for me with current favourites being Starbreach and Space Weirdos. I have no intention of spending a fortune on models and then having to buy 100 books for the rules to play with. I'm currently working on my first rule book right now. The very first thing I did after I had an idea was sit down and set myself some ground rules that I wouldn't break. I have three foundation rules that I made sure I would not break. 1. Strive to keep the game as streamlined as possible. 2. Not compromise on my style and lore. 3. Appeal to war gamers and role players in a way that wouldn't exclude either too much. These were just my rules that I decided to stick to. Also be very deliberate on your language that you use in your rules. Like I always refer to a certain thing the same way consistently through the book. So what a game round is or a game turn. Good luck 💗

I think you touched my on one of my favorite aspects of indie games and it’s the “risk taking” in how game is designed and played.

My current favorite is “Don’t Look Back” released through Black Site Studios. Co op or solo survival horror tabletop game inspired by 80s and 90s slashers. Super fun mechanics that immerse you into the story and makes you feel like you are experiencing a horror movie. Couldn’t recommend it more. Great minis and terrain (even a cabin that is playable internally) included in box. Killer is AI and can roll off all its traits or build one to fit the story or a personal fav from the genre.

The biggest thing "wrong" with them is acceptance. Since most gaming takes place in game stores, at least in the US, that means the store has control over what you play there. Trying to sell people on a game they can't buy at the shop, along with support (e.g. miniatures) is often the biggest hurdle in getting people to try them because it's not a one-stop shop (also the reason for GW's dominance)

Greatest mini's wargame rules I ever played was "Hell by Daylight." Wasn't even published by a proper company or hobby company, the guy printed them off himself, stapled them himself, and made the rounds at historical gaming conventions. Played a World War 2 French Resistance scenario with it and it was an incredible experience.

My main problem with indie games is that basically none of them make minis in plastic. Except the Frostgrave makers, I bought several boxes from them for their nice quality plastic models. But yeah, resin in comparison is such a disgustingly awkward material to work with, with or without the hassle of prepping the mini to be assembled and painted. Paint tends to struggle staying on and things will barely stick together with superglue.

Totally agree! I’ve written my own set of WW2 rules, All Hell Let Loose, aimed at playing big battles using 6mm or 10mm scale miniatures. I got over the hurdle of printing costs by putting them up on Wargames Vault. If the big companies aren’t making the games you want to play, you can make your own and share them! 👍

Ive been working on an indie ttwg that uses cards and a deck, where players create squads from the cards they draw each turn. It's meant to be able to use all miniatures, and even provides a template for players to create their own units in the ruleset using the minis they have. It has pvp and co-op gamemodes woth missions and a story with campaigns streching millennia.

Oh cool, I've got the exact same Arm the Animals shirt! I'd also like to say Song of Blades and Heroes is a really nice generic system. The most awesome game ever Song of Fur and Buttons was a fork of that system and it's sublime.

Explain to me how a game like Warhammer 40k (the game itself not the miniatures) with its multiple editions in short periods of times is better than a game that is in a single book that is around for years before a new addition hits the press?

A GREAT video; I highly recommend people try out more Indie games! Sorry to be pedantic, especially since I know this wasn’t the point in the video, but I was VERY surprised to hear you call GW a “small corporation” and “in the general world, not very big at all.” This is wrong! They are a HUGE corporation; listed on the London stock exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 250 index. According to the Economist online, they have a market capitalisation of around $3.4 billion and has overtaken Centrica, owner of British Gas and Marks & Spencer. They are a massive company in their own right and unsure how someone with an infinitely larger knowledge of tabletop gaming than myself doesn’t realise this.

I haven't actually gotten to play anything in...years, but I have been following One Page Rules and A Billion Suns. I also Kickstarted the Genesys Project. Basically, anything that lets you make your own faction and use whichever models you want is the way to go. GW makes great models, but their games are intentionally in a state of perpetual incompleteness.

I have two old Indie games that are table top skirmish games that are a hoot to play. The first is "Toy Wars" published by Crunchy Frog enterprises it's a gateway game for kids to get into the genre. Basically your "army" is based around what's in your kids' toy-box with weapons, damage, hits, etc being based on the appearance of the toy. The second game is Gummi Wars! published by Inner City Games Designs where you eat your dead.

Started playing Team Yankee recently and felt like it was kind of "Indy" compared to GW, PP, Wyrd, or FFG, lol. When you play a niche game within a niche culture, it gets pretty small.

Yeah I would call it niche more than indie because they are a "big" company that have been around... still really good though... Also, dystopia wars, star trek armada, Infinity and you could use the rules for battle group north hag in team Yankee if you want off map stuff and the chance for nukes.

One of my favorites is Shieldbash. It's one of the rarer cases - definitely indie rules, but also have their own model line to go with it. "Viking Muppets" with a fun critical success/failure mechanic and a deliberate comedic slant. And yeah, rules are free (unless you want the print on demand copy with all the backstory) and you're paying for the minis (or .STLs), but it's not priced like the big corps, and it's definitely a hobby / labor of love for the creators. It's become a staple "third round" game for gaming group get-togethers

Judgement has a new Kickstarter coming next week for version 2.0 of the game that looks fantastic. 1.0 was great but the models were 54mm scale and very expensive; they scaled down to 32mm and dropped the prices (and moved to hex movement) for v2.

Nothing. That should save about 12 minutes. No, seriously, this was a fine piece. I think the bottom line is that if you want to play with random people who have their own models, you should stick to the Top 5 games by popularity. Anything else and be prepared to buy and paint _at_ _least_ two armies while you try to convince other people to jump onboard.
