A different type of video today guys. Motivation is something that’s been a problem for me for over a year. I’m finally starting to work on it and hopefully I can get this beat. How do you deal with a lack of motivation?

I've been riding mountain bikes since the late 1980s and I've had spells when I turned into a roadie (racing and time trialling) and also went away from cycling entirely for about ten years. Now that I'm back into it in a big way again my main motivations are to get fitter and just to enjoy riding and not get hung up on trying to ride harder stuff all the time. If I'm feeling it I do it if not I'll pass it by so that I don't put any pressure on myself. It's working well, I've been riding regularly for the last few years and I'm riding better than I ever have (in terms of techy stuff). Just having fun is my main motivation.

I think that’s key Chris, not putting pressure in yourself and just having fun. If you’re having fun, everything else will come 🤘

Thanks for sharing Nathan, great insight. Over the years, I have been lucky enough to almost always have something that motivates me to get out. A new bike, a planned holiday, an inner need to feel fitter and stronger, a need to escape from the reality of the daily grind and much, much more. But the motivation has ebbed and flowed (particularly in winter) and the reasons for the motivation are forever changing. At the moment it's getting out to visit amazing new trails, making films and showing people what an amazing place to ride Switzerland is. I'm sure that your focus on nurturing the seeds of motivation will mean that your next great motivation is just around the corner!

Thanks for your comment! I've shared many of those same motivations, but even still sometimes they're just not enough. As someone said above (or below :), you need to find your "Why" and go with that. You must have some amazing riding in Switzerland!

i do struggle with motivation, one of the bonuses of having a channel is you're never short of people to ride with, it's much easier to force yourself to go when it involves not letting others down more than if you ride solo, great video mate 👍

For sure, I don't tend to do group rides so it's easier to bail if I'm not in the mood :( Glad to hear you're able to get around this man.

I think I have a different motivation issue. Once the riding season here finally opens up I can't ride enough. I keep that feeling for the first couple months but once we get into the heat of the summer I lose that motivation. I've ridden all my favorite trails and gotten into mid season shape but now I just don't feel like riding. I allow the excuses to take over and i ride less. Normally if I just force myself, I still have fun and enjoy the ride. Typically, this lasts about six weeks and as it cools off, I feel more motivation to ride. As we start looking at the end of the season, I find my motivation again.

That’s interesting Brian. I find I suffer from the same problem here. When the heat hits Spain I’m unable to do anything. In fact, unless you get out really early you can’t ride, it’s too dangerous. Similarly, come September I find my mood picking up again.

I appreciate your honestly! I will first say that I lost a 100lbs riding the bike. From that I learned that there is nothing we can’t do if we truly want something. I also learned from that experience that motivation and desire walk similar lines and we can easily confuse the two. I digress, let’s talk about you. Yes your upload schedule has changed! So has your life circumstances! But, you are still here, you are still trying and that in itself shows your motivation! Sure, you may not have the desire you once had but that is ok as you obviously are still going! That is what is important and though it may not be apparent now, you will look back and realize that. You can’t be successful with your hands in your pocket!!!! Furthermore, I understand set backs! I want to have more subs and better vids but life circumstances change things. At the moment I have been off the bike due to a broken shoulder that I got the first week we were let off of full quarantine. I have gone through divorces, I have been rich and now poor here in Spain, I have walked a million miles only to end up where I started! I have not had a good time trying to live outside of the states. But, when I am in the darkness I realize that life is peaks and valleys. I realize if there were no bad times we would not appreciate the good times and lastly, I have realized that if I follow my desires, no matter how scary or difficult or tiring they can be, that thing called motivation will find me and I will know what I have to do. All you have to do is keep pushing forward! Take care and see on the trails one day!

I'm sorry to hear you've had such a tough time. It sounds like things have been difficult. If it's any consolation, (which is probably isn't), my first year in Spain was also very challenging. Adapting to a new language and way of life can be tough under the best of circumstances, but as you said, you're still here and still pushing forward. Just gotta keep on, keeping on. Hope you're back out on the bike soon 🤘

Great video. David Goggins says you need to know your "why." Why do you do it. Motivation comes and goes and you can't rely on it. Being able to remind yourself why you are doing it in the darkest moments will pull you through. I am still working on this. If I can't come up with my "why" while sitting in my office typing on the computer, I can't expect it to remind me when I am in the hurt locker or the early morning when I just want to not get up or when I have 3 intervals to go and I am shot. It's all life. Life is hard at times. We all go through it.

Another excellent one Nathan. The hassle of getting to the trail is the mojo killer for me. I start looking at other sports like running or road riding where you simply step out your front door and start. The constant cleaning and mud everywhere is also a drain. I suspect that's not so big an issue in the Spanish climate.
@SenderoSeeker

I know what you mean. Having to take the car to get to the trails can put an extra step in the process but also add a lot of time to the activity. Time is always an issue. Finding another sport that gives the same thrill is tricky... but you’re right we don’t really suffer with mud and wet riding gear over here. In that respect were very lucky. Chin up man!

Well said Nath. I've done a lot of forcing myself to go out over the years, when the weather is awful, you feel like you could just stay in instead, and do this or that, when you're not feeling great about life, lots of different reasons like you said. One thing I always find, is when I do make myself go I'm always glad I did, it's like therapy for me, to get away from town and out into the forest, even if just a simple ride with no technical trails or anything that needs a big amount of focus or concentration. Take care man

Like the honesty Nathan. First got into MTB about two and a half years ago as a way of keeping fit. Haven't really struggled with motivation for the most part but during lockdown have had periods where I just could not get myself out the door simply because I could not be bothered and feeling a bit fed up. As things ease though hopefully things will continue to improve.
@SenderoSeeker

Cheers Mark. I think lockdown was tough on everyone. Many just didn't have any incentive to get out and ride when everything was so crap. Like you say, as things have eased up it's easier to get out and ride. Just have to try and keep the habit up long enough for everything else to fall back in place.

Nice mate. Really liked that. For me motivation comes from being able to ride harder trails with style. Couldn't agree more about confidence, I find mine flows like a trail. Sometimes it's up others down and I have to be aware of where I'm at otherwise it usually involves an off. Keep up the good work.

Hi, yes agree and very much experienced the same. It is difficult but I think of the positives and if that does not work think I am doing myself no favours. Just go out and ride something, anything, in the rain. Fettle with the bike. Buy a new component and fit it yourself. The little number positives build up to :-) again

Fun! When I have a couple of rides I don't enjoy back to back on both the road and e-bike I take a break before the habit of not enjoying rides forms. I find it's usually my bodies way of saying take a break anyway. I'm usually raring to go again in under a fortnight because I havnt formed any negative associations. If I'm having fun on either the e-bike or the road bike then everything else like fitness and motivation takes care of itself. Luckily I'm in the position to ride whenever we get a good day weather wise so never feel forced to take advantage of a good weather day. There will always be another one along soon. It would be a different story if I was still working. My most recent motivation has been smashing through Quiri's vids getting routes ready for coming over hopefully in September if it all doesnt turn to shit again.
@SenderoSeeker

Hey Doug. If ever there was a way to get motivated, it's watching Quiri's videos. Stunning riding locations and a great rider. Being able to get out on the bike when you want is a big advantage. I am similar in that respect, but sometimes just getting out the door is the biggest battle. Also having to lug a camera or two around and be enthusiastic can be a drain :) Finger's crossed your trip works out for September!

I think I know what you are saying? Maybe? I lost all interest in riding & I had a few weekends off the bike & one day a mate asked me if I would like to go for a ride with him? I told him no a few times then when we met up on day & he was so excited about riding on one of my favourite trails & seeing the excitement on him I asked if I can ride with him next time & that was it I was hooked ones again. Now I will go to trails on my own but will take tools with me & do some trail repairs or build a small jump. If I ride with my wife we take things easy ish but if I ride with my mates I try to push myself harder to keep up with them. I would say having a bit of time out helps you to love it more when you get back in to it ?

I definitely think that time of the bike can help, but what happens when you just don't want to get back on again? What happened in your case seems like a good way back, showing someone else the joys of mountain biking and passing on some knowledge. Any road back has to be a valid one. Chin up Yan 👍

@@SenderoSeeker I have just been told that I will be out of a job / made redundant in 3 / 4 weeks time so it put a downer on my life & riding. My wife got me in to mountain biking about 5 years ago & when I told her the news about the job she told me to just have some time out & to go riding anywhere in Wales to clear my head before looking for a new job. So my plan is to take 3 / 4 weeks off & take the motorhome & the mountain bike away around Wales & I may even try & become a KZitem LOL
