On October 2nd’s episode of our ongoing interview series, “What’s Your Story?”, Gather Project of Miami had the honor of interviewing Anikah McLaren, Executive VP of Narrative Film at Participant Films, on her early career and her rise to prominence. The interview was led by Geethika Kataru (UM ‘23) and Eme Ramirez Cucunuba (UM ‘22) and was moderated by Abigail Diaz (UM ‘22).
The interview started with an overview of where Anikah first got exposed to the industry, with her internship and assistant positions. She touched on what she took away from these roles and what advice she would give to students and young people who are looking to advance their careers. McLaren then gave some incredibly relevant and important advice to women and women of color who are in school for film or who are trying to break into the industry. From building your community, finding mentors that care about your growth, to advocating for yourself, McLaren gave us fierce advice that we can use in our everyday lives and in our future careers. We enjoyed hearing this practical advice and believe all aspiring filmmakers can take away something important to use in their future. Thank you to Anikah for an inspirational interview.
