Meteorology Questions I’m 18 years old and literally just graduated from high school (today). My dream career is meteorology. I’ve lived in Oklahoma/Arkansas all my life, my father is a storm chaser and photographer and I’ve been in chases with him for as long as I can remember. I’ve always been passionate about it and even learned how to read most of the different types of radar when I was young. I don’t necessarily want to be a TV Broadcaster like David Payne, I want to study weather and do most of the background things like that. Only problem is, I’ve done some research and it sounds like I’m going to need to be advanced with mathematics…one problem, math is my absolute worst skill. I mean I am totally abhorrent at math. I had to bullshit my way through high-school level math and just barely squeaked by with Bs in all of my math courses. In all of my other classes I have high As. On my ACT, I have gotten 27+ in all areas besides my math, which ended up being a 17. So basically my questions are as followed: •What type of math is required? •Do I have a chance? •Will college slaughter me? (I’m like…really terrible at math •Is it even gonna be worth me trying? Thanks for reading, I hope you guys get back to me.

Don't stress out. As you're in your university, you will be able to learn it there but it will take hard work. Believing in yourself and working hard is the best action to take.

@@KSN324 thats my concern. math and science are my biggest struggles and most college require calculus among physics and other hard math and science classes and that makes me so nervous.

fellow math strugglers going to uni for math stuff (I'm also considering meteorology, among other things) or anyone concerned that you'll be bad at an essential skill for your major, some words of advice: 1. What do you think your paying them for? To teach you stuff you already know? 2. It cannot be statistically possible that EVERY SINGLE PERSON involved with a math-oriented career was a math wizard after high school. At least SOME had to have honed it. 3. A weakness can be observed and ignored, or you can try to analyze and improve upon it. Not saying it will work, just making a philosophical assertion. These are all things I tell myself, so take it with a grain of salt. Good luck, Godspeed, break a leg

@@rodjerdankist1125 I just rewatched the video above. The last bit of the video shows a Skew-T graph, which basically measures different variables in the atmosphere. Where do the measurements come from? Instruments on a weather balloon. I’ve actually studied about this exact annual phenomenon that happens in the Southern Idaho/Utah regions almost every winter. Just to summarize it, pollution tends to get trapped near the surface underneath a layer of warm air. Warm air rises, cold air sinks. Since, the temperatures at the surface are much cooler than aloft (higher in the atmosphere) all that cold air and pollution with it will stay near the surface. This is called an “inversion” which just means (temperature increases with height) These inversions will stay around until another winter system pushes out the warm air. It’s very interesting, and awesome to realize that’s what the video is showing.

Rex II ForSure study math? I’m in meteorology for the United states airforce and it’s basically the same except I also do flight plans for all jets that hit the sky. I have no need to use math. Machines give you the numbers. You just need to understand distance and acronyms. It’s a very difficult course. They teach you words that don’t even exist except in meteorology. It’s great though. I recommended this career field for anyone who wants to challenge themselves.

Meteoron- "something in the sky" meteorology basically translates to "study of things in the sky" and during the time it was first used, (around 300 BC) rain, snow, rainbows, and hail, were all considered meteors, including meteoroids Meteorologists still use the term meteor to describe weather though, like lightning is called an 'electrometeor', and snow, rain, and clouds are called 'hydrometeors', rainbows are called 'photometeors' and so on
