Tayler! Thank you so much. You’re so right - I don’t know why we can sometimes feel it has to be some kind of knitted garment (which I was so stumped on because of the scratchy texture) and even though I grew up around Navajo rugs and weaving and knowing it can be used outside of knitting, it never once occurred to me to… not knit it. Lol. I love the wall art idea though my husband has requested the pillow and my sister watched the video and has already asked about slippers. Thanks so much for taking the time to do this and for all the wonderful history and resources. So glad to be on Patreon and see the board too. This was so wonderful. Thank you!! PS - my mom is trying to remember where she got it so she can leave some more history in the comments soon 🙂 -Tyler

Hello, Tyler's mom here. I simply can't remember the name of the shop I bought it from. It was a hardware store that the locals could get chickens, wool, roving, as well as general household sundries. I loved that store! Dying wool was a big thing and you could get enamel pots and pans as well as natural dye ingredients. I learned Navajo weaving while I was there from a famous local artist.I had a weaving loom and drop spindles that I bought from the local Saturday market, as well as all my weaving tools handmade by local artisans. I've decided, because of this video that I am going to bring Tyler back and show her the magic that is Gallup ❤

I visited this shop, Weaving in Beauty, a little over a month ago and it was fantastic. The yarn you showed in the video was not the churro yarn but they have an absolutely HUGE selection of churro yarn as well as other commercially dyed yarn. It's definitely worth a stop if you're in the area.

I was thinking of using a decorative ladder to display the hanging skeins - a lot like the wall hangings you showed. Or, she could use the ladder to display some type of simple weaving or easy blanket construction. This type of hanging structure is portable, modern, and easy to use. Fantastic video!

I have done Motif 2 of the Stella Quilt Cushion in worsted weight stash yarn and I love it. The process of working through her pattern is absolutely joyful. Instead of doing her backing, I am knitting Motif 1 as my backing and then I will join them over a cushion form I created out of the excess of an eggshell mattress topper that was too large for our bed. I am so excited because Laura Penrose is releasing the blanket version of this pattern tomorrow. It is stunning. Thanks for all the work you put into your videos. Love your channel.

I loved this episode!! I have a bit of Navajo-Churro/Merino blend yarn in my stash from Four Corners Yarns. I had been saving it for something special as well and have finally decided to use it to crochet a purse. I’m so excited to use it. Also wanted to mention that there was a project in Pom Pom issue# 46 that uses Navajo Churro yarn!

I love your channel, Taylor, and found this episode of particular interest. As one who lives in the Four Corners region I especially appreciate the context you provide as to the significant of churro sheep to the Diné. Over the years I have purchased quite a few skeins at “trading posts” on the reservation run by Navajo Arts and Crafts Enterprise (Gallup, Shiprock, Tuba City…). The 4 oz skeins that they carry for weavers, Top Of The Lamb (100% wool) and Lamb’s Pride (wool/ mohair blend), from Brown Sheep Company, look a lot like those single ply skeins in question. I imagine you’re familiar with those rustic wooly lines and their historic connection to weavers; might there also be a connection to your contributor’s story? In any case, your suggestions are spot on. And the cultural context you provide is important. Thank you for all you do!

Depending on the tooth of the wool, my first thought was a shawl. Maybe even by splitting the hanks into 2 or 3 by weight and holding them double to create a fade, on size 8 to 10 needles to make extra drape.

I cant even tell you how much i loved the simple wall hanging idea and i can not believe i have never considered something like that for a treasured skein thats just not really suitable for a garment or anything else. My mind is just blown. Might as well look at it and love it even if it doesnt get knit or crocheted instead of just putting it back on the shelf or in a box over and over. A big nail art where you wrap the yarn around like a spirograph picture comes to mind too, now that my mind is functioning again! Thanks for sharing and thanks to the viewer for sending in their yarn too!

I am so happy that I tuned into your podcast today. Just this morning, I came across some yarn that I hand spun from “Swedish Wool” that I received in 2020 from Honer Och Eir and that I had included a pattern for a very cable-heavy hat pattern. In looking at the worsted yarn in a new light, I decided that the cables would not pop (as the colors are a combination of lilac and lavender) and that this yarn was a bit too rustic to wear on my head. However, in watching your podcast, I think that the cabin slipper design that you showed would be absolutely perfect! I have 3 skeins, totaling 502 yards, is 3-ply and 10 wpi. Thanks again!

Imaginative exploration! I hope Tyler shares with you what the final disposition of the yarn will be. I was thinking of a knitting bag….or even a felted project. Sometimes it’s fun to get inspiration and then make your own pattern - perhaps could use all of the yarn that way, too. Thanks!

Hello Tayler, This really came at a time when my hanks of This same yarn have been sitting for a year ( came right before I moved house) and since it is a little scratchy, though incredibly lush yarn, I've been trying to come up with something both useful as well as VeryLovely, honoring the culture in a way would be nice. Someone recommended a Tea Cozy.. I have one skein of Indigo dyed and one that is a lovely Red. The rest are a suite of natural cream through to dark brown. Rainbow Fiber Co-op is who I bought them from but they seem to have shifted and aren't contactable or on IG anylonger. So glad I bought these when I did! I wish them luck to keep their sheep going!

SE2SE offers passport program for fiber artists. When you purchase a fleece or yarn you get a sticker. Once you do something with it, you post a photo with the sticker to earn the ability to add to the passport. Also, true genetic heritage Churro have three fiber types like Icelandic. Navijo Churro are currently listed as critical status. The wool is generally not next to skin soft however, hats mittens or outer wear. I will be spinning the breeds, then knitting Steven West Penimguano sweater, with the different breeds or different sections. Churro felts well and the slippers are a perfect. Maybe knit a pair for her mother!

this looks like a similar sheep to an icelandic sheep, wonder if traditional icelandic knitting patterns would work / could be combined with it to make up a sweater?

It is similar in appearance, but I feel like from what I’ve experienced with the yarn in person, it can be slightly more dense and dry. But really, it is very similar and I suspect patterns intended for Icelandic wool yarn would be good here.

I don'r know about you, but my neck is the most sensitive part of my body and I really can't abide scarves or cowls that are scratchy. I generally avoid super wash yarn but what I do get I save for things that will go around my neck. For me, if I was going to make a garment out of this yarn, a cowl would be my last thought -- my first would be a vest or an outerwear sweater so it wouldn't be against my skin.

This was fun. My brother gave me sweater that was gifted to him by a girlfriend 30 or more years ago. She was from South America, I forget the specific country. The yarn was from their sheep and was shorn, carded, spun, and knitted by the mother. The sweater was gigantic for him as he was a small man. I started unwinding it a while back but did not get far. It has a loose twist so the strands separate easily. Anyway, I periodically think about this yarn and what I would knit with it. The slippers caught my attention. Mark died 4 1/2 years ago. Due to COVID we did not have any kind of service. So I believe I could knit 3 to 4 pair of slippers with the yarn to gift to my sister, nephew, and great neice. I need to finish unraveling the sweater to know for sure. I am concerned about the stranding or separating plies of yarn. But you have given me some ideas to consider.

@@WOOLNEEDLESHANDS you have said it many times. And I have given you tips for how you possibly could achieve that "high end" bouclé fabric with this yarn. However, I think that you should look for other ways to use it up. It is not suited for plain stockinette. If you want bouclé, buy bouclé. Use this for a blanket knitted in garter stich. Try making log cabin squares.
