What SpaceX Just Did With Fairing Reusability Totally Shocked NASA Engineers!
There is a seemingly simple part of the rocket that is very hard to recover after launch and is worth up to 10% of the rocket launch cost.
Yeah, it's payload fairing.
Therefore, several years ago, Elon Musk raised the ambition to take back this 6 million dollars in cash in a pallet flying through the air.
To achieve that goal, SpaceX has applied a creative idea researched by Nasa in the Shuttle era.
What SpaceX Just Did With Fairing Reusability Totally Shocked NASA Engineers!
It is funny that while Nasa was impotent in making that clever idea a reality, SpaceX managed to leverage it to obtain unparalleled achievement.
Find out everything in today's episode of Techmap.
Remember that the Falcon 9 V1.0, the first member of the Falcon 9 launch vehicle family just launched two times per year on average. Yet today Falcon 9 is launched roughly 100 times per year, while Shuttle couldn't get above 10 launches per year in its entire 30-year lifetime.
What SpaceX Just Did With Fairing Reusability Totally Shocked NASA Engineers!
On May eighth, SpaceX launched its seventy-fourth Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Complex 39A. This mission, combined with the preceding Falcon 9 launches and the nine Falcon Heavy flights, allowed SpaceX to mark 83 orbital launches from SpaceX’s KSC pad.
That’s one more than the 82 shuttle launches that took place over the whole history of that program.
Those achievements are mainly thanks to the successful SpaceX reusable launch system development program. And one important branch of this program is the SpaceX fairing recovery program.
