Outstanding analysis, I was a former slug in the league, I coach a small program in Oregon and cannot emphasis enough that hockey 101 has been forgotten. Parents and player want to be Kane, true coaches want Toews. Thanks for keeping it real.

The last goal in the series to my mind says it all Mathews exhausted trying to chase down the goal scorer. No forecheckers. It always seemed CBJ we’re hungrier and willing to do the hard and dirty corners

Our powerplay entry wasnt really the issue. We actually got setups quite easily against CBJ. Once we were setup they were forcing Marner to shoot and that wasnt effective for us. That was the issue, it was once we were setup we were not dangerous. We spent a ton of time in the O-zone too and coudnt generate enough off the cycle

The only innovative type play I've seen with the Leafs was the stretch pass reliant, rush-heavy offense they tried to employ under Babcock. Not the most fundamentally sound way of generating offense, especially with the left right discrepancy in the back end, but the strategy maximized the skating of the smaller, younger players on the team and minimized their inability to maintain effective cycles. Keefe needs to be called out, as does the offensive coordinators on the team because it's one thing to change tactics through the course of a series but it's another to be running this type of breakout for an entire season

I agree 100% motion/ speed is key , plus 99% are scared to go get the puck and really how is #52 on this team in any shape or form ??? really who is the last guy you would want to actually be the last guy on the ice ???

To be fair the drop pass does work, and so does this powerplay entry we've been using it since under Babs. But I think your missing the logic of it a little bit, the reason we have two guys standing still on each side is to create a possible 2 on 1 on both sides of the ice while the puck carrier has speed. When done correctly it can work and allows you not to dump the puck in and better yet maintain possession along the boards which is very important on the PP. Game 5 really came down to poor execution as well as Keefe being outcoached in my opinion.

Missing the logic? The logic is if your system forces 3 or 4 guys to stop and wait on the blue line, you will never enter the zone with speed. Everyone is at a stand still except the puck carrier. I’m open to being wrong here. If you can find a clip of a team doing it well (even of the leafs under babs), I’d love to see it. Even if you get a 2 on 1, it’ll be with a player who has been stopped at the blue line. Not ideal, in my opinion, if you’re looking to use your speed (which we have). Anyways, I appreciate the discussion! Shoot me a clip if you can, and I’ll happily adjust my opinion if I’m wrong!

@@JeremyWeiss The system is to have 2 players entering on both sides of the blueline (not necessarily stopped but trying to time it, if they are completely flat footed they are being lazy), never really 3 or 4. And that doesn't mean you're not entering with speed, the idea is to have 1 player enter with "speed" without giving up possession of the puck because maintaining possession is more important than entering with speed on the PP in my opinion. kzitem.info/news/bejne/rppvtKuOhIh0m5w at :40 seconds you see Matthews and Kappy execute it nicely, notice they are not trying to create an immediate scoring threat but rather gain the zone, get the puck in deep - drawing the PKers down and then finding the Open D-man to give everyone time to get into their attacking positions. in the next clip 1:19 Detroit tries to 1-3 it and clogs up the middle of the ice to defend against the slingshot however Tavares does a great job timing it and they get a clean entry and a quick drop pass to the point for the setup. Ideally it goes to the point after entry because its the fastest way to setup however down low to a streaking Marner is also an option. I personally believe it is an effective way of entering the zone on the PP. I Think it just comes down to execution under Keefe, I personally think the execution level for everything was higher under Babcock night it and night out I thought they were better until this past season when it appeared he lost the team.

@@Funeralclown. Great response. I'm with you on the setup. Drive deep and get the setup rather than trying for the immediate scoring chance. My main complaint is the NZ drop pass... which puts 2, 3, or even 4 guys on the blue line at a stand still, as you see in about the 1:24 min mark in your clip. I think they'd be more effective at driving it deep for the setup without the NZ drop pass. I'll admit though... the execution was better in your clip than it was vs CBJ. Thanks for sending it over!

@@JeremyWeiss There is so little time and space out there and I think the drop pass can give players a little more. Its almost like a lateral pass in football. At 3:45 of my clip you can see it used twice pushing back the red wings players all the way inside their zone. You can build speed without the puck and try and catch the other team flat footed, I think its a efficient way to move the puck to players that you want to have the puck.

What’s wrong with the leafs is that they rely too much on their star players and have absolutely no depth on D, if Marner Matthews and Tavares aren’t doing well then the team stinks
