Hey Dr. Rea I have a question when should I swap my golden retriever from puppy food to adult food? He is currently almost 11 months old. Everywhere I have looked says 18-24 is that accurate?

I wish the charts you post were easier to find (outside of your channel of course). Like the average person looking at dog food would have no idea about that resource and that those parameters even exist. So easy for people to go down the fresh food or raw food rabbit hole and have no idea what to even look for nutrient-wise.

The NRC nor AAFCO has a recognized senior lifestage. Any food that has the label is gimmicky because there are no established guidelines for senior pets’ nutrient levels. Just continue to choose a food that the Statement of Nutritional Adequacy states is for “maintenance” or “all life stages" but be careful with the nutrients of all life stages and find one that has actually been through actual feeding trials and is made by a well-known, reputable manufacturer. You'll just have to adjust as needed.

Companies noticed that they can cater to all types of owners (those who own kittens/cats/senior cats and same for dogs) by creating an ALS diet instead of making ones for each life stage. It's easy and lazy for them and also probably cheaper from a financial/profit point of view.

There is a purr-fect food. It is homemade. Using a calculator, created by a person disparaged by Glenn, you can absolutely create a food with the exact levels of nutrients and vitamins. There is a list of recommended items to use. You simply mix in the correct ratios of foods. The calculator tells you the levels for each ingredient you add. It is mostly fresh food, but you might need a supplement or two. The correct level of thiamine for cats is difficult to achieve naturally. Liver is a great fresh food. But my cats resist eating it. This causes me all manner of problems. Another pawsome video! Happy Purrsday!

When you use such a a calculator, how does it know what is in the exact food you are using. Is it just a basic guess like: in general 5 oz of chicken contains x amount of protein. That variability is one of my major concerns with just using a calculator many find online. And does it account for the interaction between ingredients? Just curious.
@edschulhof6303

@@AnimalDocRea Yes it does account for interaction among ingredients. It is similar to preparing a meal for someone with any number of dietary restrictions. Talking about normal healthy dogs, I can always just cut the amount when feeding with all life stage food, right? If calculating correctly, giving the same amount of protein from a more nutrient-dense food(all life stage food, aka puppy food) only means less carb in the bowl. For example, my friend’s 30lb border collie gets 1-1.25 cup of Orijen daily instead of 2 cups of Hill’s SD, which helps him maintaining healthy, athletic shape. What do you think of my take on it?
@AnimalDocRea
Ай бұрын
That’s not correct, energy density is accounted for in the parameters presented. Conversions are done to make all goods equivalent on a DMB. So no, feeding less will proportionally provide less of all nutrients and render a deficiency in some parameters. In your example, Orijen is not nutritionally dense, it has the same if not lower ME than the SD mentioned ( standards based on 3500-4000 ME). Energy density and caloric density are two very different parameters.
@fengwei4164
Ай бұрын
@@AnimalDocRea Thank you for the reply. But there is something I disagree. Orijen(3920kcal/kg) generally has 10% higher ME than SD(3617 kcal/kg). I took one popular food from each brand and did a careful conversion for every listed nutrient. I couldn't see any deficiency. Orijen exceeds almost in every nutrient except total kcal. Doesn't it prove that Orijen is a nutrient-denser choice? I know excessiveness can be bad but it is another aspect. I emailed you the detailed comparison I did.
@AnimalDocRea
Ай бұрын
As long as a food is between 3500-4000 it’s not considered nutrient dense and the published numbers I use apply. Those numbers are based on a ME between 3500-4000. I’ve not received you me email to review your maths, but will be on the lookout. It doesn’t matter that the goods are different ME to each other, as we are evaluating goods against the standards Wich do not require a conversion at that ME. As far as deficiencies, that occurs when you take a food and lower the quantity fed below the recommended calorie allotment because it reduces all the nutrients fed because these are on percents. Unless of course you are using the per/kcal basis Wich is a different matter.
@AnimalDocRea
Ай бұрын
Ok yeah, you are giving me data in grams. We are talking about two different things. Where did you get those numbers in grams. I use % on a dry matter basis so we are talking two different things here
@fengwei4164
Ай бұрын
@@AnimalDocRea I understand DM percentage is an easier way to evaluate . However percentage doesn’t make much sense without accounting feeding amount(these two brand have much different suggesting amount). I used grams instead of cups for better accuracy since kibbles have different grams/cup due to shape and content. Orijen is 125g/cup and SD is 100g/cup. (These are derived from their official website) Combining Guaranteed analysis table and feeding chart, I come out with the actual grams of each nutrient, which made the table I sent you.
