Love this! I am 18 and looking in the future to build my dream home as a barndominium that is open and has a lot of space so thank you for this information!

After having lived in my lovely TBC barndo for a few months now, I can attest to all that you say about the advantages. I am impressed by the energy efficiency, and the soundproofing of my home. Being fairly new to “ tornado alley,” one thing I would add is how reassured I feel regarding the sturdiness of the shell when it comes to the fierce winds that we have experienced so far. I have little doubt that my home would survive a storm that would severely impact surrounding homes.

I'd really love to learn more about weather / storm ratings. How would we go about figuring out if it meets requirements for our state?

Any Barndominium can be built to meet the standards in your state. Just have to aim towards the requirements and do it! 👍🤠

A couple thoughts for your comment if I may, Josh: 1. For a house with 4 corners, a high, primarily unbraced wall height, a clear span of up to ~36', and a simple steel gable roof the steel frame will provide a more cost effective building shell. 2. The cost of building a kitchen or bathroom is largely independent of the framing type. This is a major portion of the cost of a home. 3. The more you use long-span steel systems for the exterior (roof, walls), the better a steel building will perform economically. 4. Specific to Texas, the vapor barrier wants to be to the outside, so a closed cell spray foam coat plus more economical internal insulation is quite effective. 5. Specific to regions that require engineered slabs, the steel structure has a negligible foundation premium over stick framing. Where you need to contend with frost protection, steel may be less cost effective. 6. When you have a lot of building corners or a very complex roof, steel starts to show its limitations. These factors will always increase cost, but it is more dramatic with a steel structure if the design isn't leveraging what the steel can do.

I can’t disagree with any of your points. All makeup a leveraged advantage for why the Barndominium stands out amongst its counterparts

I have been watching a lot of your videos and I love the Zip system. One thing I have not seen is putting the metal over the Zip. How is this done? Doesn't screwing into the Zip compromise the seal?
@TexasBestBarndominium

It doesn’t compromise the system to apply fasteners. We used screws with seals attached making it impenetrable from water.
