I feel like cannibalism is natural to things that engage in it in nature, which humanoids don't so it'd be unnatural for them. The druids who engaged in it warped their true nature and this was the result. Pretty straightforward in my opinion.

@derekstein6193

@@ravnemagne9598 Now that is an interesting idea; a Druid cantrip that summons spiders under your control. What I mean is the CR 0 Tiny beast from pg 337 of the MM. Just have it summon 1 per casting, it stays under your control for 1/4/8/12 hours (@ appropriate cantrip levels), but is permanent (doesn't disappear; could just be summoning from somewhere else or just creating from magical energies). The cantrip could function like a low-grade Find Familiar, and allow up to a sizeable number under your control at one time. Collect enough and you can turn it into a spider swarm (swarm of insects variant on pg 338 of the MM). I estimate the spiders to be hand-sized or slightly larger, and to make up the Medium swarm could be in the 20-30 range. This may necessitate putting the maximum controllable spiders being linked to the cantrip leveling mechanic; possibly a max of 10 from levels 1-4, 20 at levels 5-10, 40 at levels 11-16, and 60 at levels 17-20. These could mean 1 swarm at second tier, 2 swarms at third, and 3 at fourth. I believe I now must make this a thing. P.S. Remember, the spider in question has an intelligence of 1. It can only be commanded to do the simplest tasks (Attack, Dodge, Hide, Dash, etc); tactics, anything beyond simple one-word answers (if using Speak With Animals), and the Use An Object action are off the table in any reasonably run game. There is a reason why monster statblocks include Intelligence scores.

I like to think Ettercaps are Druids who gave themselves over to combat Lolths fiendish influence on arachnids natural inclinations yet years directly confronting her warped them. Without Ettercaps Lolth would have her kingdome of the spiders on earth.

Ettercap Ambush: Recommended for Levels 5-10. Description: The party is hired to escort a cart of trade goods as guards for a wealthy merchant, whom has lost several carts travelling a trade route through a nearby forest, under the belief that bandits are stalking the trails. Encounter: Several Ettercaps have laid a gargantuan patch of webbing on the trade route path, intending to catch travelers and wild game that stumble into it. Depending on party strength, the Ettercaps (CR 2) will have the assistance in the ambush from Giant Spiders (CR 1), Wolf Spiders (CR 1/4), and Swarms of Spiders (CR 1/2). Scenario: The party lazily await within the covered wagon as the cart travels through the forest, saving their strength for the moment when the bandits might strike. Suddenly, the horses loudly neigh before being cut off as they fall forward and the crunching of bone and sinew can be heard, as the momentum of the cart crashes into the ensnared horses and comes to a hard halt. The rider flies forward past the horses and falls into the webbing ahead, also becoming ensnared. (The party makes a DC 15 Dex Save to take 6d6 bludgeoning damage or half on a save, as the horses were travelling at full speed at the time of the ambush.) The rider screams in horror before the party can leave the cart as large spiders emerge to descend upon the ensnared rider. The Ettercaps wait silently within the forest, attacking only when the party is occupied with the other spiders. (The Ettercaps with their Web Garrote Wire will wait to confirm who are the casters before striking.)

Actually, cannibalism is very much part of nature. We humans practice it daily without even thinking about it. We gnaw on our cuticles, swallow cells dead skin and hair from our own and other peoples' bodies... etc. Kissing in and of itself, entails some bit of cannibalism. We dont think about it, but how many times have you licked blood off of your cut finger?

@wadespencer3623

In general none of their backstory makes much sense. I'd chalk it up as made up by people who don't know anything about spiders. Spiders are not actually particularly cannibalistic. Your average spider will eat other spiders... of different species. Actual cannibalism of conspecifics is rare, and I'm not aware of ANY spider where the mothers eat their babies. It's anti-invertebrate bias! Like you wanna talk about wolves? They slaughter each other in territorial clashes all the time! Why don't druids who become wolves become violently territorial?
@mutanthybrid3466
4 ай бұрын
@@wadespencer3623 Actually, cannibalism does occur among spiders of the same species more often than you think. Female spiders do sometimes, or even often eat male spiders of the same species either after, and sometimes before mating. Spiderlings will eat weaker spiderlings of the same species opportunistically. Female wolf spiders do occasionally eat their own young when food is scarce of when a spiderling shows signs of being weak. Jumping spiders of the same species will react territorially and either run others off, or attack them and eat them unless they are adults ready to mate. It may not happen as a daily occurrence among spiders of the same species, but they have no compunctions, remorse, nor morality regarding cannibalism of other spiders of the same species. I have observed it myself commonly in the spiders I have raised both in captivity and in natural settings.
@wadespencer3623
4 ай бұрын
@@mutanthybrid3466 I won't claim to know all spiders, but I know it's exaggerated in many groups (say, black widows, where they get eaten a lot more in captivity, where the males can't just leave). Surprised about wolf spiders though, they are usually exceptionally careful, protective mothers and often won't even attack babies that don't belong to them!
@mutanthybrid3466
4 ай бұрын
@@wadespencer3623 It is true that captive creatures that will practice cannibalism have a much greater chance of being predated on by the female in captivity in "widow-like" species. I often ensure that the females of such species as praying mantises and spiders have a good meal before mating to reduce the chances of that. Actually, some species of spider and insect males present the females with a gift of a dead insect as a meal to keep her from eating him during mating. They realize it is a dangerous business they are in from the get go to approach a female of their own potentially carnivorous species.

I have heard this lore before and I love that it hints at druids reflecting darker aspects of nature. I think they make obvious villains that aren't used enough since there values often run counter to the civilized races. I didn't know that druid magic is considered divine magic, since the first edition I got my hands on was forth I liked that primal magic was its own thing. I think that if I were to codify a system I would try to make each source of power and magic its own thing, though they may arrive at the same destination. I am absolutely using this for a oneshot or something, imagine the shock when the druid, about to be devoured alive, is told by the lone matriarch that they are very much alike.

I wish this had been here when my party was going through spider infested woods. It would’ve been a hell of a lot more interesting to know they laid traps….

Thanks ... I hate everything about it. And I'll definitely use this in my campaign.

Hey Rhexx, you happen to have the Yuan-ti on your list at all? I still can't find satisfactory lore on them, even in Volo's Guide. Also- mad props to you for keeping up with all this deep lore, you've basically become my sole resource for obscure lore in D&D
