There was a meeting of the Transport Committee a few weeks ago about e-scooters. A number of participants from various interest groups attended (including the police, partially sighted and, er, Halfords). The obvious takeaway was that everyone knows e-scooters will be legalised and they just want the government to get on with legislating to make it as safe as possible.

I have a bicycle and a motorbike and I'm not planning on buying an e-scooter. But I see their advantages compared to other modes of transport. I strongly believe restricted limited e-scooters should be classified as e-bicycles and given the same right of passage. I loved the humour. For me, you can swear all you want, if you don't mind being demonetised by KZitem, that's fine by me. Honesty is undervalued. I'm 53, got my first one earlier this year, Apollo Ghost, and I'm in eastern Canada. I have another one the way, an Apollo Phantom. Officially, they're "illegal" beyond a certain wattage & speed, but our city police have better things to do & I'm one of the 'good guys' - always with a helmet, never faster than vehicle traffic, proper lighting - my new one has signal lights - never on a sidewalk with pedestrians on it, and when passing pedestrians on trails, I slow to almost their speed so there are no surprises, etc.. E-scooting is very, very dangerous, I know. I've ridden motorcycles of all kinds since I was 10yrs old this is quite a bit more dangerous. Pot-holes are worse in areas that get snow, and with 10" wheels, you have to know your path very well. Keeping in mind, my scooter goes 66km/h (1200w per wheel), that is not a safe speed. It's the best thing I've ever bought - I used my car twice in the last 3 months. It feels like you're flying. Fold it up, throw it in the trunk, walk into a store with it, keep it in an apartment closet for the winter. A backpack becomes your grocery bag. I go every day to get my food for the day because it's fun. But it's dangerous. You're on a stick & a plank with wheels smaller than Ron Jeremy's schwantz, and you're capable of near-motorcycle speeds. Old farts like myself are the best candidates for these since we're not insecure enough to recognize how dangerous (for the rider) these things are. We're up against some bad apples doing their best to get these things outlawed (passing pedestrians at almost highway speeds), passing vehicles, playing "vehicle/bicycle/pedestrian" roles as convenient, and even holding GoPro selfie sticks while they do it. Do NOT ride an escooter with one hand, ever. We're also up against people who want to outlaw these things because they themselves don't want one, or they hate fads, or they think lazy bylaw creation is the answer to all "police don't have time for this" scenarios. Environmentally, no question - these things are incredible. They use the precise amount of energy it takes to propel you. My car has 270hp (WRX) but 99% of the time, my engine's displacing more than it needs to just by being on at a traffic light. You'll go through brake pads, so try finding something with regenerative braking. Tires are tiny, so they'll wear out fast - but they're pretty cheap. Any bicycle repair shop can fix your brakes if you can't. I can't recommend these things enough. A little active enforcement of the rules (yes, I know, stress on the police who've better things to do) can keep these things legal.

We have to be careful comparing pedestrian injuries caused by scooters vs cars. This is because the vast majority of e-scooter riders are replacing a pedestrian journey, rather than a car journey. So if we are comparing deaths and injuries, we should be comparing those caused by scooters vs walking. And, quite obviously, few pedestrians are killed or injured by other pedestrians, than scooters. We also have to recognise that with the majority of e-scooter trips replacing walking or cycling, rather than driving, and with half a million people in the UK dying from inactivity, if we get to see large numbers of walking or cycling trips replaced by scooter trips, we are going to see a significant increase in the "inactivity" death rate in maybe a couple of decades time. e-scooters are a good thing, but only if they actually reduce the number of car journeys, and only if their use doesn't become so ubiquitous that we ultimately end up seeing major increases in deaths due to inactivity in the future.

E-scooters are a great idea and tool for urban commuting. But as someone who constantly advocates for cycling and rides a bike regularly for commuting and utilitarian use, it is sh1t scary watching people on scooters weaving in and out of traffic day and night, with no hi vis or lights with reckless abandon. All they have to do is hit one pothole with those little wheels and that's gonna be a world of hurt. Young kids zooming around housing estates at daredevil speeds on their new Christmas presents with absolutely no supervision. I was waiting at traffic lights in my work van with my indicator on to turn left at 1am recently and just as the light turned green and I started to move off to turn left, a suicide jockey on a scooter blasted past me on my left going straight ahead dressed in dark clothes and with no lights front or back. If I had been under pressure and running late, I could have been hitting the accelerater harder and moving off to swing left much faster and that gobshite could have been responsible for leaving some dents in the side or back of my van and on his way to hospital or dead. This is what gives e-scooters a bad rep. I was shocked by this near miss. But if he had managed to kill himself I wouldn't have worried about it too much apart from the dents on the van and just nominated the little fncker for the Darwin Awards.

@@Electroheads Thinking about replying to your response I suddenly became aware of how tense and agitated I had become and how my heart rate had elevated. Yes, it is true about a sizeable proportion of everyone out on the roads from pedestrians to truckers and everything in between are dangerous to themselves and others whether that be through ignorance or arrogance. I recently saw a video of a probably high on drugs thug who filmed himself deliberately knocking an old man off his bicycle on another section of that same road. The old man is alive but hospitalised. But as someone who drives a white van for a living and has had countless near misses (and one or two non misses!) with idiots on bikes and increasingly now scooters, I make a point of having my bike lit up like a Christmas tree at all times front and back along with indicators and mirrors and always wearing a hi-vis summer or winter, day or night and ride like my bike like it is another vehicle on the road with consideration for my safety and other vehicles too. If I'm going to get plastered to the road by someone in a white van or anything else, it won't be because they didn't see me or I cut in front of them when they were turning left. Infrastructure makes a huge difference and it's so haphazard and poorly planned so far I find it worse trying to use it for a short stretch until it ends and then having to get back into the road again. It's bad but it has to start at some point and hopefully gradually it will improve. But lack of infrastructure doesn't justify someone behaving like a daredevil suicide jockey even if there isn't any actual infrastructure. About half of everyone out on two wheels of whatever kind seem to fall into the category of the above described suicide jockey or at best are just blissfully unaware of their own vulnerable position among other traffic or visibility. Breath in......... Breath out......... I think I have managed to relieve some pent up stress. Now I'm going to hook up my bike trailer on my bike and head out to town for about 40kg of shopping with absolutely no cycling infrastructure in the 6.5km between me and the supermarket. The issue with the study is that it's based on the rider share companies, whose scooters are speed limited to their respective countries (mostly 20kph). I'm fine with escooters having a speed like that, but the problems/accidents occur when people buy the beefier/faster scooters. There's a greater chance of an incident with the decreased stability that other commenters have stated. I would welcome the German system as commented by Tim Satchell below where registration would be a requirement, and the addition of insurance for the faster vehicles would be a must. I look forward to the day when I can buy a scooter and use it legally (I'm not laying down money until then) because me knees are bad and cycling is a literal pain.

Look at the numbers of people with disabilities who can't even use micro mobility. The real truth is.... Choice!!!! People are choosing more to drive rather than anything. Also how can you tell a Lamborghini owner to switch to cycling when they wanna listen to a V12 or a Range Rover owner who wants to sit in a luxury vehicle? @steveo4991 The decision to halt the Voi e-scooter hire scheme came with many in Birmingham followed an incident which left a teenage boy with life threatening injuries in February. The teenage boy sustained life threatening injuries after the e-scooter he was riding collided with a car in Balsall Heath at 5.30am.3 May 2023

These should be OK to use, I have a car but for short journeys I would leave the car on the driveway and use a electric scooter, brilliant modern transport solution, cheap to buy and use,I fancy getting one now, but the law over them is stupid, so I'm going to wait until i know when the law changes?

Fantastic video, had me cracked up. Was there any reference made to the issue of scooters causing harm to pedestrians, any numbers on that? I see that being made as an argument against scooters. I feel like the slowness of the government here in adding these to the law books, is a mix of things, fear of adding loop holes, and risk of loosing out on tax revenues among them.

I have difficulty in walking any significant distance, I have ordered an electric scooter in the hope that the government will change their mind (sic) about E scooters. Surely if they are used sensibly they will contribute to the government goal of us being nett zero. Of course there will always be those who are not responsible just as I see every day in drivers of any vehicle. Perhaps your research paper from Europe could be sent to the Minister for Transport to support the cause. Sorry it’s so long I’ll shut up now.

Could I point out one interesting statistic? If we assume that the majority of Daily Fail readers are among "the working age population" of the UK (32.84million) The average daily circulation of the "paper" (784,273) indicates it is read (or at least bought) by 0.86% of that population. The opinions of less than 1% should not influence policy?

I do wish cyclists would go electric, especially in the country. One pedaling cyclist struggling to climb a long gentle hill at 4 mph, followed by a tractor and trailer hauling hay bales, with no chance to overtake on this winding country road, had accumulated a queue of traffic over two miles long. Imagine the pollution this was causing with the long line of cars in first gear. An electric bike at 15-20 mph would have been a lot greener and safer.

We are waiting to see how the government can get money out of Scooter riders before it is legalise.. I have a full bike and car licence, so can ride any bike or drive any car, I'm happy to buy an E scooter, a better one than the goverment endorsed one, insure it etc, and wear helmet etc.. I'd even get better lights and indicators.. Thanks for an informative video and all the data, let's hope the government pay attention.

@hartoz

This data is fine, when you are considering the shared e-scooters, but it does not take into account the privately owned imported scooters. Many of these have fake CE marks, and dodgy batteries and do not adhere to EU or UK Regulations. Some of them are capable of speeds in excess of 100kmh which is downright dangerous on a device that has a wheel with the circumference of a tin can. Add to that the batteries which explode because they do not have decent battery management systems, which have caused many homes to burn down and people to die. E-Scooters like other motor vehicles need to be regulated and need to adhere to a determined standard, currently with privately owned scooters it's like the wild west.

I quite like the idea of electric bikes but I think they are very expensive. I don't live in London so I wouldn't recoup my money by saving on London public transport prices. As for e-scooters There is something inherently silly about them.

The issue will always be against the scooter and not against the car , deaths have always been an issue with cars lorries etc it also brings down population numbers it creates jobs massively especially amounts of money and pollutes especially fossil fuel . Motor bike accidents happen because car users are asleep half the time and not looking around them when driving and always in a hurry .

what about electric scooter fires (lithium ion battery) they seemed to have increased over the few months and they are not easy to put out.
@Electroheads
Жыл бұрын
Lithium Ion battery fires are something that worries the London Fire Brigade. But this is not a scooter-specific issue. There are hundreds of fires on the London Underground every year because of laptops. The solution is regulation - high safety standards, educating customers to buy from reputable brands and stores.

Your comment just prior to your valedictory sounds about right. Your talk was so mixed up with humour that you lost credibility. I have one thing against scooters and that is the lack of a seat. My only concern is the tendency for all of us to push the boundaries, "Tuning" pedelecs thus rendering them illegal is commonplace and is not policed. I have two pedelecs and no longer drive. I started cycling 78 years ago and if it kills me I can only die once. If it does not something else will, None of us is immortal and I want to enjoy my bikes while I can.
