Do it! I've talked about this in a few of my other videos, but there's no reason you can't pursue a PhD later in life. There are multiple students in our program who are 40s+. This is my only video that's specific to people who are in undergrad, so the rest should be helpful!

Hi Casey. Love your videos with pro tips & suggestions on applying for graduate school. Curious for your take. I graduated from UCLA five / six years ago, and I intend to apply for PhD programs at top tier schools. While I did indeed engage with my favorite professors, staff & faculty at the time, I hope to reconnect with a handful after so many years through zoom. Is this advisable from your experience? What do you recommend for getting back in the academia game? Thanks so much!

Hi, Casey. First of all, I want to thank you for your videos, they helped me a lot in this application cycle. They helped me to the point of being accepted to the PhD philosophy program at UCSD. However, I wanted to ask you something. I am in a bit of a situation here, as my wife was rejected from UCSD, but has an offer in University of Toronto. I didn’t know, but apparently this is a common issue called the “two-body problem”. As a professor and part of the admissions committee, is there any consideration to this kind of situation? If one of the couple is accepted in one university is it possible tu appeal the decision of the other one? Any comment on this would be extremely helpful. Thank you so much for your videos, they have been incredibly useful.
@CaseyFieslerPhD
2 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is the term. I'm unclear from this whether you also have an offer from Toronto. Though in any case, it is worth telling UCSD what is going on - that you may not be able to attend due to your wife having a PhD offer elsewhere and not at UCSD. I think it's likely that there isn't anything they can do, but it doesn't hurt to bring it up. In any case, this is certainly an important thing for you to consider in your decision.

Hi can you please give a guideline for those wanting to go for fields that are relevant to their undergrad but not exactly the same and those who do not have access to required courses? As in for me I do not have enough of a mathematical background and cannot do courses outside my department because in my country such courses are not available simply. So will self study for completing relevant topics work? What kind of accredition might be necessary?
@CaseyFieslerPhD

Are you applying to PhD programs that have specific required courses from undergrad? I'm afraid I'm not familiar with that! So you may want to ask someone in your field. (In mine it's super common for people to have very different undergrad degrees.)

I may, though I'm not sure I'm a good example of best practice. :) Though honestly, the short answer to how to use one is: just use it. Put stuff into it! The mechanics will be different for every different system.

Hey Casey, Apologies for the long comment but I really need your help in this because i am applying for a phd, abroad in the USA. I recently graduated and due to lockdown I haven’t had much of a research experience (only 6 months of wet lab while doing my final year dissertation). My field is biological sciences and as you know, unlike CS or other streams research experience( esp. wet lab) in this field, cannot be attained “online”. I had published a few book chapters and two review articles in journals like Springer, Elsevier, taylor n francis etc., during lockdown. So, can I include that under “research experience” in my cv? (p.s we received only one semester worth of practical class in college after that colleges got closed owing to covid, and then another semester in our final year when things got normalised.)

Is there a way to accurately document your research assistance? I reached out to a professor to talk about helping with research. She said yes! And I've helped her for awhile now. She's said she is going to try and help me get a research grant to do my own project this year. There's no reason to expect me to get my name on the research so how would I show PhD programs I helped with this? Would it have to be inside a recommendation letter? Your videos are very helpful! I'm studying Economics by the way 😀 Getting 3 recommendation letters feels like so many.. I'm going to have to really try to stand out! Haha. Also, I'm really worried about my GPA. I was in a car accident and dealt with my bipolar diagnosis before stepping away from school. It was pretty bad before then. I came back and have very good grades! 0.03 away from dean's list last year. I'm so worried that my past will impact my future ambitions. Ahh! Graduate school is so scary!

Hello Casey!!! First of all, thank you so much for your videos, they're very helpfull. I want to ask for your advice about getting research experience. The problem is that I don't know how to get professional research experience before applying to a PhD programme. None of my spanish universities have any kind of research project that fits with my passion. That's also why I want to study abroad. What should I do instead?
