Parents of struggling reader should get a copy of "Parenting A struggling Reader" by Susan L Hall & Louisa Moats (PhD in education). Excellent book with great resources based on Ms. Hall's own experiences - child struggled in grade 1 (USA) - aka Year 2 UK - was professionally tested and was tutored that summer up until middle of grade 3 (USA) - aka Year 4 UK and caught up to his peers. Very helpful and informative book. Excellent video! - I understand as I tutored kids who were strugglers - ultimately they all did well.

Thank you so much for this video, my daughter knows all her phonics but struggles to blend the letters to make a sentence. her hearing and vision is 100% as I had her tested, I am a new subbie hopefully your videos will help me have patience with her and find ways to help her. Her school recommended O.T and speech but i decided to try help her myself before getting help elsewhere. its a battle every single night trying to teach her. You are right when you say "we need to be patient as they will not catch the words immediately". at times it seems we are taking 5 steps forward and 2 steps back but i am patient. its her first year in 1st grade. I am hoping by the middle of the year we would have made progress.

I hope my videos can help 🙂 It can be hard to be so patient but it sounds like you're trying all the right things. I wouldn't say no to OT and speech if this continues to be an issue as they can be really helpful. I've had lots of children go to ST or OT and it's great as these therapists have a very specialist knowledge that children can't always get in the classroom. Wishing you the best of luck x

+Little Learners Lovely Video! Excuse me for chiming in, I am interested in your initial thoughts. Have you researched - Bonaliyar Bizarre Blaster (search on google)? It is a great exclusive guide for teaching your child to read minus the hard work. I've heard some interesting things about it and my mate at last got great results with it.

Yes my son is struggling with blending words. I try to get him to let it flow but he sounds like a robot when he reads. He was really good at reading at first and it's like he lost all the skills.

I like your videos so so much, I'm Egyptian and my two boys 7 & 5 yrs old are learning English as a second language. They're struggling sometimes with digraphs and silent letters and I think my older boy is having anxiety about reading something new... Anyway your videos are helpful and you're a good teacher 👍

My child has just started in year 1 and been assessed with the rest of the class. She has then been sent home with something called a ditty sheet to practice every single night for 2 weeks. Yet some others in the class don’t have this. Does this mean my child is behind as to where she’d be expected to be. I feel as though we get given homework, but with little explanation for the parent as to how to teach it and also little by way of feedback as to where they are in terms of progress until parents evening.

Hi there - all children learn differently, so it's about finding what works best for your child. Is her school supporting you/her? I have a lot of videos about phonics, segmenting and blending which could help. A lot of it is about repetition and looking at books together to discuss what is happening. If she reads words by sight that's great, not all children get on with phonics, so it's just about enhancing her understanding when reading. I hope some of my other videos are helpful, please do let me know if there is something you would like me to cover in a future video.

Great video, subscribed :) , I personally love reading and learning, but don't really have time? I got 10 and 12 year old and they hate reading, how can we read together during holidays as they just play computer games which they love :(

I would recommend finding books that interest them - can you find books about the games they like? Maybe they would prefer non-fiction books rather than stories. Go with their interests! 😊
