If you are staying in Brunei Darussalam, visiting Kampong Ayer Water Village, the most treasured piece of living history in Brunei, is a must.
You can go on a group tour or have a private experience, and it is very easy to do. Kampong Ayer Water Village is located on the Brunei River,
right across from Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei. If you walk along the Brunei Waterfront, you will see a lot of boats floating around and offering their services. You will see many locals using these boats as water taxis to get to the village. People are friendly and speak English, so, finding a good private tour guide is not a problem. We agreed on $40.00 for a 90-minute private boat tour consisting of Kampong Ayer Water Village and Mangrove Forest. Kampong Ayer Water Village is the largest water village in the world and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has an area of about 10 square kilometers It is home to over 10,000 residents. And has over 3,000 houses, built mostly out of wood. It was inhabited over 600 years ago and is a unique self-sufficient settlement. It has schools, hospitals, markets, mosques, police and fire stations. Kampong Ayer’s construction is amazing. The entire village is built on stilts and connected by a wooden boardwalk. It is over 38 kilometers long and consists of hundreds of turns, twists, and bridges. The village has a net of transportation with multiple Jetti Stops, just like bus stops, where you can get a water taxi. If you are brave you can walk on it at your own risk. Be prepared as there are no rails
and some wooden planks can break at any time. Let's have a short walk together. From the village, you can enjoy a gorgeous view of the Al-Muhtadee Billah Mosque. It is named after Sultan Bolkiah’s eldest son. If you wish, you can ask your driver to get closer or take a jetty to stop # 7, to explore it on your own. It is fascinating to drive around the village, enjoy its beauty, among the homes on the stilts, and under the bridges, and get a glimpse of traditional life. Now, it is time to move to our second part of the tour - visiting the mangrove forest and spotting endangered species. It is nice to meet and chat with the local fishermen and see what they have got.
Mangrove forests, also known as Mangrove swamps are productive wetlands that occur only at tropical and subtropical latitudes. It is home to some unique species, such as the Proboscis monkey, also known as the big nose monkey. Even though they are the largest monkeys on the island of Borneo, they are very shy, so it is not easy to see them. But our driver was very helpful, so we saw quite a few Proboscis monkeys. Estuarine crocodiles are common in Brunei and they are the largest species in South East Asia. For those of us who like to hike and be in nature, walking alone by the water sources can be not safe. Also, from the riverside, you can enjoy the view of the Istana Nurul Iman Palace, the world’s largest residential palace in the world. It is over 2 million square feet in size (2,152,782 sq ft (200,000 m²). And is open to the public only 3 days a year.
Perhaps, it is another reason to visit Brunei Darussalam, Bandar Seri Begawan another time soon. Our tour is coming to an end, I hope you enjoyed it, and found it useful.
