For everyone who keeps saying, "there aren't any black people" please think about why that could be before claiming people in Vermont are racists. Not a lot of black people in an area does not equal all the white people in that area are racist every time this happens. Vermont was one of the first states that was founded in the US. There were not black people there when it was founded (I am not speaking about Native Americans in this, that is a WHOLE other conversation, I'm just speaking on the black population of Vermont). As we all know, black people were brought to the US as slaves. Vermont was the first states to ban slavery, well before any other state. Which meant many of the black people living in Vermont; left. Vermont did not have the large plantations or large cities that other states had which meant even after they were no longer slaves, there was little work for black people at that time in Vermont. Vermont is cold a majority of the year so they don't have the agricultural work that other states have and this was most of the work that black people at this time could get a job doing. Not to mention, the population of Vermont is one of the smallest in the country to begin with. Because of these reasons, there was no "pull" for black people to stay in Vermont or come back to to this state. So, could there be racist people living in Vermont? Absolutely! There was racist people everywhere! Even in the most liberal of towns and cities. There are examples of racist and hate crimes everywhere in this country - it was built on racist ideals (that's a whole other conversation as well!). However, to call an entire state racist, simply because there aren't a lot of black people living there is unfair. We have to look at the history and analyze that as well.

I lived in (South) Burlington for a year as a preteen in 1970 and loved it. It is truly a special place. I've been back about 5 times since then -- not nearly enough -- and still find it very charming, especially since the city center has changed so little since I lived there, and most changes have been for the better (like making Church St. pedestrian-only). Make sure to visit if you can!

@drpatriot2001 Yes! And don't buy this talk about treatment. They make several mistakes every year, and partially or wholly untreated human waste gets released into the lake. Also, if it rains especially hard, the storm water system gets overloaded, and untreated human waste goes right into the lake. This is why North Beach and Leddy Beach are always getting closed for high e.Coli levels.

Burlington Fire DEpartment s favorite bar called ESOX doesn't have a metal door but a varnished wooden door much like Nectar s and some of the more famous bars...nectars has spray painted tables and egress well in a panic would be tragic....with the amount of alcohol stored and consummed you would think metal doors on all bars would be a LAW.....then if you visit the waterfront....Burlington Sewer just had an employee let loose I think 10,000 gallons fo raw sewage into the Lake surrounding the waterfront so it may stink alot which is frequent on rainy days when the sewer tank overflows into the Lake because it hasn't been upgraded to handle the numerous developments Burlington is adding along the Lakefront from New York City Chinese developers that Bernie is dealing with as a Socialist.....and the 100 year old sewer system throughout Burlington hasn't been upgraded either so its like a mini New York city on a small scale which is where the Mayor s sister sells luxury apts to the Chinese that are old low income housing apts torn down to make way for new and the residents migrate across the Lake for Vermont Welfare programs and housing so Vermonters who apply are last on the list or living in the woods on I 89 unable to find affordable housing.....so this blog written by the New York Times is not surprising because the affiliation with the Mayor is probably there like the votes coming from the sister city and students who aren't educated in city administration at all too busy partying on the crafter beers brewed here....so welcome....have a few crafted beers and hold your nose as you tour Burlington Vermont s beautiful city that stinks right now and enjoy!

I'd have to call it soft-serve ice cream for the same reason I'd ask for a large coffee if I went to Starbucks.

A very white state. I’m thinking DeSantis should start shipping illegals there. They need a lot more black people too. Come on, Vermonters, diversity is your strength!

Nope the state and Burlington is fine just as is, excessive diversity creates numarous problems.
