Very often only the cities like Amsterdam or The Hague and Rotterdam are visited by tourist visiting the Netherlands. I decided to go looking for Dutch food which is apparently also quite diverse in various cities of the Netherlands. I have started it with the city of Leeuwarden which is the capital of the province of Friesland and is 140 km away from Amsterdam. Very easily accessible by road and train.
I was joined by my foodie friend Helena Smit from www.eatinghabits.nl in this exploratory journey who was kind enough to explain a lot of nitty gritties of the food culture there. You can also find her on Instagram with the handle @eating_habits_nl
The places we visited and recommended are:
1. The House of Taste for their Frisian worst (sausages)

2. Salverda for their Oranjekoek

3. De Broadsje Bakker - for their suikerbrood

4. Fire Cafe - for their mustard soup and bitterballen with truffle mayonaise

5. Boomsma Museum - for their beerenburger (type of genever/gin)

6. Museum de Grutterswinkel - to learn about old groceries and lifestyle in olden times

7. Cafe de Bak - for great ambiance inside an old prison
