The Cantonese name for the Octopus card, Baat Daaht Tùng (Chinese: 八達通), translates literally as "eight-arrived pass", where Baat Daaht may translate as "reaching everywhere". Less literally though the meaning is taken as the "go-everywhere pass". The number eight refers to the cardinal and ordinal directions, and the four-character idiom sei tùng baat daaht (Chinese: 四通八達), a common expression loosely translated as "reachable in all directions". It is also considered a lucky number in Chinese culture, and the phrase baat daaht can possibly be associated with the similar-sounding faat daaht, which means "getting wealthy" (Chinese: 發達) in Cantonese. The English name coincides with the number eight in the Chinese name, since an octopus has eight tentacles. The logo used on the card features a Möbius strip in the shape of an infinity symbol. PS. Do you guys realise the one in UK is called Oyster Card haha~

I've been to HK maybe 50 times or more, mostly on business and a number of times on of times on vacation. Even when going to other parts I'd stop over for a few days either to or from Australia - I have NEVER felt unsafe in HK - late night walks around the island, TST, Jordan, Mongkok anywhere I use the subway extensively, I've never had an issues night or day. A great place to visit - give it a go. Yeah the neon used to be spectacular, especially down Nathan Road TST and Mongkok - if you walk around some of the side street around Temple street market - you can still get a feel of what the neon was once like. I agree with Ace of Space - I did what I now say was my last trip to HK Feb 2019 .... I do miss the old Hong Kong

I think going into hongkong as a newbie there is a lot you guys don't know, there is better street food around mongkok area/ also better local restaurant. Ladies market is a better market than temple street. and also i dont think the issues in hongkong are doing anything for hongkong tourism. it's a local issue. it's not a foreigner issue. they are simply flighting for their rights. well this may make some types of transport or things you want to do seem more difficult than it should be. it's really not bad at all for a tourist.

BTW I’m so glad I found your channel, you did a great job in introducing different countries, exploring the cultures!! Your channel deserves more viewers and subscriberssss Oh and about the safety part... growing up, Hong Kong is honestly one of the safest places ever! However, we are just really frustrated about the excessive use of force by the police. They are just, a whole different species🙂 many police actually resigned their jobs as it was just unreasonable and insane-

I agree with the above comment. I was in Hong Kong 2 days ago. I originally planned to stay for 10 days but cut it short to 2 days. The hongkongese people speak Cantonese. The Chinese people generally speak mandarin. Hongkong people are very proud of their identity and have a strong opinion about it. When we talked to Hongkong locals most of them were very proud of being a citizen and especially proud of their Cantonese language. The neon signs are THE REASON for most photographers to visit Hongkong. People like bigheadtaco (popular Camera Reviewer from Vancouver) travel often to HK to do night photography. Sadly, like you've mentioned, the neon lights seem to disappear slowly.

Hong Kong and Macau are cantonese speaking cities, in Cantonese there are 2 kinds of saying thank you... “mmgoi sai” if you will say thank you for service or help and “toh-cheh” if someone gave you something like food, money, any material things or someone compliments you, and take note “mmgoi” also means “excuse me” or “please” in Cantonese it depends on the tone...you can just use English in Hong Kong because many Hong Kong residents understand and can speak English because English is the second official language in Hong Kong because Hong Kong is a former British colony...

just to correct you, Cantonese is not a language but a dialect, it's still Chinese language. Shanghai has its own dialect too like many other places, people from outside have no chance understanding our shanghainese dialect.

Isolde L that is Mainland BS ! Do some research and don’t be so one-eyed! By international standards both Cantonese and Shanghainese are Languages distinct in their own way and cannot be understood by general speakers of Mandarin

It’s really really good - you should sell it on your KZitem page - we’re headed to Hong Kong and Thailand in March , we’ve been watching your vids religiously , as you guys have done an awesome job explaining and breaking it down , it’s not the typical beach bikini bum shots, slow mo shots like EVERYONE else does, it’s informative, well shot and aimed at the average traveler 👌🏽

You can use the octopus card for everything, from transportation to restaurants even street vendors, convenience stores.. It's Chinese name is 八達通,it has the meaning of leading in all directions. So convenience, easiness, efficiency are all in one. Just like Hong Kong herself 😆🤘🏻

nice video of the city! octopus card is called that because you know, octopus have 8 legs, and the card can be used at many places such as mtr, bus, 7/11, restaurants, etc. Also, 5pm isn't rush hour because people are probably still at work lol. finally, the price you see at the market is not what the locals pay haha.

Thanks for the memories ......... spent a total of 6 days on my way to and from Barcelona as a stop off originating from New Zealand . I couldn't quite work out if i liked or not ??? for the first day . My thoughts Busy ! really disapointed in the food was so excited to actually gonna eat the real Chinese food , maybe i didn't know where to go ? i called in to so many eating places lots of noodles with sauces on top virtually no greens in the end i resorted to a middle eastern place just a few blocks from my hotel , stayed on the Kowloon side , kept myself super busy , trains and buses were great using the Octupuss and loads of walking , a whole new appreciation of the Chinese people , loved the old ones doing there morning exercises sorry brain block , in the parks , and the old ladies with there bent spines from years of carrying cardcoard boxes , disappointed with the night markets ' crap ' & virtually no street food ? that park in the middle of the city was my spiritual place that i headed for every morning , didn't realise how green HK is as you mentioned , or the kilometers kilometers of high rise apartments as i was speed training back to the airport ..... Some thing magical HK xx Thanks love your post just discovered you two

The rush hour doesn't start until 6pm here actually, but now people are boycotting the subway because of some of the political issues that are happening here. I hope that you enjoyed Hong Kong, I'm sorry you have to see it at this state, but the next time you come back, it will hopefully be the bustling city like it used to be. Also, we speak Cantonese here, and Mandarin is kind of frowned upon here. Also, it is not so humid cause it's fall now, just try coming here in the summer and you'll take that back, I think the summers here are worse than Thailand. A lot of the stations close now because of the protests, but sometimes they close it and cause chaos. We feel in a way that the MTR is betraying us.
