can anyone explain how to use the drive modes? (the center console mountain/road toggle for the differential locker & the sport mode). I have a US '09 cayenne S and want to know what mode(s) I should be using for on-road mountain driving in snowy & icy conditions. TIA for any help you can offer :)

The off road mode engages the differential and gives you a very impressive 4 wheel drive mode (vs all wheel drive which is its “normal” mode). You must have the vehicle in neutral to engage off road. Sport mode does a few things. Firstly, it will start off from a standstill in 1st gear, rather than the usual second gear that it will in normal mode. It also increases the throttle response to the accelerator pedal. Essentially, it gives you somewhere around an additional 20-25% of throttle response. It also changes the transmission response. It will hold gears longer and hold you longer in the powerband. It will also increase your fuel consumption by quite a bit if you drive it like I drive mine in sportmode. I drive it like it’s a Porsche.

You won’t need to use off-road mode often. Lots of snow, steep dirt or muddy roads perhaps. It’s all wheel drive (normal) mode is highly capable. I live in eastern Canada and have only had to use off-road twice and that was during blizzard conditions when driving to work (I don’t have the option of staying home from work during bad weather).
