Sea turtle nesting season has begun on the Gulf Coast of Florida. Here's what you need to know!
Florida's sea turtle nesting season occurs from May 1 to October 31 on Florida Gulf Coast Beaches. Female sea turtles emerge at night, digging nests in the sand to lay their eggs. After covering their nest, they use the light from the moon to return to the sea.
This remarkable process has occurred for thousands of years.
Beach residents and visitors play a crucial role in this event. You can help save these extraordinary animals by doing a few simple things. If you see them, keep your distance, give them privacy and avoid flash photos. Turn your lights out or use sea-turtle friendly lighting. Knock down sand castles and fill in sandpits and holes. Pick up and properly dispose of all trash and remove beach furniture.
