One piece of simple advice as a bass player for 26 years: Get strap that is wider and and padded. They better spread out the weight of a bass on your shoulder than a normal guitar strap; basses are typically heavier than guitars because they're bigger and have heavier-duty bridges, tuning machines, pickups... even the strings are heavier... it all adds up. A good strap can make the difference between a distracting pain point in your shoulder and an effortlessly comfortable gig or session. My favorite is the Mono Betty, but each person might have their own preferences.

Thick. Leather. Padded. The leather both makes it more comfortable and helps it stay in place better. Learning bass is hard enough. If an extra $40 will mean that the strap is the last thing you notice after a lengthy practice session, it's completely worth it!

I guess if you play 🎻 (violin, viola, bass cellos or double bass) getting used to the four strings shouldn't be too tough. After all, any (electric) bass would have (typically) at least four strings. But the best of versatility and not too niche is five string PJ basses. That fifth string covers drop tuning and pretty much many other genres without having to downtune too much. That's how I got my first bass anyways.

After having played for two years, I think this video is sorely missing two points: (1) neck radius, and (2) neck finish. The neck radius tells you the curvature of the top of the neck. Fenders are typically 9.5" which is more curved than a Ibanez which is typically 12" (I'm talking 4-strings here). I initially gravitated toward a flatter radius (12"), but now I'm thinking of moving back to a more curved neck to make transitions across strings easier (I'm working on Vital Signs by Rush). Beginners won't know what radius to choose, but it's important to recognize that there is a difference. I find myself fairly sensitive to the finish on the back of the neck. Many basses use a gloss (i.e. thick polyurethane) finish. I find this less comfortable for my thumb than a satin (i.e. thin polyurethane) finish. I feel like the satin lets me feel some texture of the wood and makes it easier for me to hold the position I want. It's good to go to a physical store to feel these differences. You may not really know what works better for you, but at least you can regognize that there is a difference and see how it affects your playing.
@Brutsie

Regardless of the number of strings on the instrument you are buying, what is essential to "sight the neck" Place your eye near the rear strap connector & look toward the nut. The neck needs to be straight. Does the fingerboard curve toward the sky or the ground? It can be corrected & needs top be done before you buy it.

I have way too many bass guitars to choose from but I can always count on my pbass copy silvertone that cost next to nothing..over the years I've upgraded parts here and there but it really has been a work horse of an instrument for me..always shop around and try different models..you really cant go wrong with a slightly older model squire pbass or something similar..no mater what genre you are into

Great video, Sweetwater fan here. Love the info mixed with fun humor. What would I add? Hmmm, Jazz Bass =Geddy Lee, Jaco, M Miller, John Paul Jones all in same breath :) For me, P Bass is Pink Floyd and in black, deep punch sounds, along with mentioned Motown, 60's-70's hits, and Punk/Pop/Rock, even RHCP Flea-ish! Modern Active Soapbar/Humbuckers , would have been good to quickly show sound switched non switched so a buyer could identify what that means, but honestly you guys n gals did a wonderful job in a quick overview that made excellent points to consider. PS, also agree with the wider strap mentioned below for heavier Basses. Trying to figure out how to best fit a Victor Wooten mention in here, bcuz he is kinda a little of everything, yet not, lol.

one factor of the short scale bass option not mentioned is their ability to produce deeper timbre, fuller, lower sounding notes, due to the difference in string tension, compared to the long scale counterpart. Good examples of short scale bass sound are Barry Oakley, of the Allman Bros. , Jack Cassady, of theJefferson Airplane,and Phil Lesh, of the Grateful Dead. Paul McCartney, Jack Bruce, of Cream, Tina Weymouth, of the Talking Heads, and the amazing, Tal Wilkenfeld, get the idea ?

ATTENTION: if you have not played any strings instruments or any instruments at all, I’d recommend a second hand bass and a second hand amp (test it out first oc). You may not stick with it or just simply don’t like it, it’s fine bass is not for everyone but getting one 2nd is not only cheaper but also easier for you to get rid of it if you don’t like it. And if you decided to stick with bass you’re def knows what you want for your 2nd bass, the cheap one could be back up and practice bass. My first bass is a ~1990 aria pro magna 2 series with a gutayone amp both are Japanese 2nd import cost me round ~175usd. Work like a charm, I still haven’t decided what to upgrade next

@musenw8834
2 жыл бұрын
Regardless of shop or secondhand, like what he said, aim for a second hand bass around the $180-$300 region, since there's a balance between quality and overhead cost per se. And always try the basses before you decide whether to buy them or not. Shop: Set your budget $500-$1K range if you wanna play your personal bass long term, making it value for money. Key thing is to experiments with different volumes and tone controls (and sometimes the pickup selectors) and most of the bass sounds comes primarily from the player. Secondhand: Budget can be $200-$500, but if you happen to run into Ammoon or SX basses (which can cost below $200) it might be a hit and miss 🎯; you might get one that's not poorly constructed and plays decently enough for casual jam. But to be safe, $200 is the lowest you can set (Aria STB JB / PB / PJ)

@sweetwater
3 жыл бұрын
Hello, Thanasis! If you're talking about scale, or rough sizes of basses, then a 4/4 or whatever would just be a 1:1 normal sized bass. Probably 95% or more of the basses we sell are standard sized, 34" scale length basses. Sometimes stuff is advertised as like 3/4 scale, but it's best to look at the scale length instead of something like a "3/4 scale" sizing approximation. The majority of the short scale basses we sell are around 30" scale length. Thanks for the interest! Kevin Spunde, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1732, Kevin_Spunde@Sweetwater.com

Do they take the same amps as guitars? 🎸
@sweetwater
5 ай бұрын
Hello, yeserneirda3451! Bass guitars actually take their own separate amps. That’s because you need something that can handle the low end of bass and is tuned specific to that. Guitar amps are tuned very differently. Give us a shout and we can discuss in more depth! Thanks for the interest! Cost of a decent bass guitar?

Hey man, this is such a great n informative video! I am looking to purchase my 14 yo daughter's first bass guitar. We believe the normal sized ones are too big for her. She is on the petite size and has tiny little doll hands. 😁 She likes music of all genres, but is very much into Avenged Sevenfold, Ghost, Falling in Reverse, Melanie Mtz, and early to mid 2000s popular bands like MCR, AFI, PanicattheDisco...to name a few. She tried a Dean bright green, A Squier, n were too big n heavy. There was an Ibanez Mikro and it was perfect in size and weight. Also saw a mini Squier, but discovered a Jackson Minion online. She says we are now "confuzzled" on what to get. Please guide us 🙏 😅 Thank you!!

Hello, Margie! It seems like you are on the right track. The Jackson Minion, or Squier Bronco, or Ibanez Mikro would all be good options. I would highly recommend going with whatever she thinks looks the coolest. If she likes the way it looks while she’s playing, then she’ll ultimately want to play more and feel proud of it. Very solid advice for younglings: Ask your parents for a Fodera Monarch Select and show them that low-low price tag it carries. They'll say no, of course. Then, show them the Stingray Special H-4 Snowy Night that costs 3x less. Hopefully (fingers crossed) they'll think it's a good deal. If that doesn't work out... well, ya really can't go wrong with a Reverend Decision through a Hartke Tx350/Hydrive210. Yep, that little rig will still shake the hinges from your bedroom door.

hello i’m a sixth almost seventh grader trying to buy my first bass i’m looking for something thats a bit more deeper but that’s not always very deep what do you suggest i buy for my first bass?
@sweetwater
2 жыл бұрын
Hello, Walter! I'd stick with making sure you get something comfortable for yourself, but that also looks cool to you. Look for something that will be enjoyable to play for your first couple years of playing bass. The phrase "a bit more deeper but that's not always very deep" is hard for me to decipher online. P basses and Jazz basses are a great standard and a good starting point (jazz bass is just a little more flexible tone-wise). Those have kinda bulky bodies, so if you have a smaller frame I'd maybe check out something like a Fender/Squier Mustang, or an Ibanez Mikro, anything with a short scale length will have a smaller body. @sweetwater

Hello, Abdenour! I'd recommend getting an amp, tuner, cable, strap, stand, etc. It's better to get everything you'll need right off the bat. Plus you can't really hear a bass all that well without an amp. Thanks for the interest! Spunde, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1732, Spunde@Sweetwater.com

I ended up going with a safe Ibanez SR300(4string J w/ 2 single coil/active pick ups), with more experience I thought I might grab a pricier P Bass later on as my second one.

can i use the same tuner for bass and guitar????

Hello, cocoa candy! Generally speaking, yes when it comes to tuners you plug into. In my experience playing bass some clip-on tuners do work a little better than others - my favorite is the TC Unitune. Thanks for the interest!
