You said the key, Chris, someone that takes pride in what they are raising. Honesty isn't something that seems to be lacking now a days. Even with my rabbits, I raise rabbits for both pets and for meat. My wife will tell you that I can be the worst sales person when it comes to my rabbits, especially with the Lionheads. They require more attention than other pet type rabbits. When I was active managing dairy farms and I would go to purchase heifer calves, or bred heifers, there were those that would try to sell you cross bred animals. Know what your buying and if you need help, ask someone that knows to help you. Great information Chris and Darlene. Blessings to you both.

@@SnipingRhinoRanch It's is amazing how much you can learn up here . Just be careful there's a lot of wrong or half right and sometimes outright lies put up here by " experts " just trying for views . I fight that battle daily , from sick livestock because of natural remedies that are a complete joke to tractors almost beyond repair because ( I watched a video and tried to do it myself it looked easy ) of false how too videos . Just got done fixing a botched points to electronic ignition conversion took all morning when I could have had a new set of points installed in 15 minutes . What should have been a 90.00 fix turned into a 365.00 fix because some jasper on u tube did a video talking about how stupid it was to have points ignition because HE didn't know how they work and couldn't fix them . Chris and Darlene, Thank you for all you do. It is so very much appreciated! I own a small homestead, I grow a large variety of vegetables, Microgreens, and have a few fruit trees. I also have Rabbits, chickens, and LGDs. I am getting ready to add a few more animals over the next two year Pigs are at the top of the list. I am in northern Michigan so selection for good breeding stock is hard to find. And I want to start with the best I can. (foundation is everything). What do you charge for a breeding trio with an additional barrow? I should be ready by fall of this year.

It's usually around 2.00 a pound for a good meat pig , I try to sell them between 35 and 50 lbs . I like to worm them on the way out that way I know it's done and the customer won't have a problem and I can show how , what and how much to use . How much do they weigh ? 25 to 30 lb pigs usually eat a about 2 lbs of feed a day or a little less . Sometimes just being moved will put them off feed for a day or two . Worming them sure won't hurt !

How long do you keep your piglets on your sows ive weaned as early as 4 weeks and as late as 7 really depends on the condition of my sows and how early they start eating feed. I usually feed the sow in a short trough so the little get curious about what she's doing and seems to me maybe I'm wrong but seems to me that really helps getting them little ones jump started on the solids I do use a starter from Hubbard's to get them going when weaned but ive had luck weaning early and late but I am curious about how long you try to wait before weaning and maybe some insight as to why
@HomesteadingtheHardWay
3 жыл бұрын
I wean mine by weight and how good they're eating usally at 6 to 8 weeks and 30 lbs ish . Old folks say when they knock the Mama out of the feed trough they're ready . The longer you wait within reason ( not 10 or 12 weeks) the better the pig will be now you have a lot more in them but my customer's are willing to pay more to be sure of a good pig but you have to pump the feed to the sow or they will pull her down and some calcium supplement is a must
@jaybaker9684
3 жыл бұрын
@@HomesteadingtheHardWay what do you use for calcium supplement I hear there's one you can add to there water have you heard that??
