IMO, I think 8GB of RAM should be the minimum and 16GB should be the recommended. I've run into instances where I've encountered out of memory exceptions when I used a machine with 4GB and I wasn't doing anything too crazy. An example if you're running Windows 10: Having Visual Studio, Chrome, and SQL Server Management Studio open. Those apps will definitely give you trouble if you're running on only 4GB of RAM.

I started programming on my old HP laptop. Specs: i3 5th gen, 8GB ram, 1TB HDD, 720p 15inch display. Kinda gets the job done. Takes too long to launch any IDE. Helpful advice if you're going for Lenovo: (mine is Y5070) - Don't drop them, they are made of paper (learned that the hard way) - If you are gaming on them on Linux seriously consider a way to cool them down because I melted mine playing Skyrim. XD Now I have no GPU but I don't regret anything XD It died playing Skyrim so it died a hero! PS: I have a 10 years old VAIO laptop and the keyboard on that is just amazing. Haven't used a nicer keyboard to this date. Disclaimer: I don't know about the new Lenovos and I'm just sharing my experience. If you are more careful than me they are good value for money though!

And for the same reason I paid 25% premium compared to US market. That HP ENVY you showed sells for Twice the amount here. Thank you for the vid!

4GB of ram is minimum only on linux. 8GB of ram on windows gets eaten by bloat alone. U can of course remove this by disabling a whole ton of background processes, but there is no guarantee to stability if you do so. If u want a laptop to run very fast on low spec hardware, install linux on it. I recommend any arch based distro or arch if you are already into linux. Arch isn't that hard to install, in actuality and i recently heard of a small script that does it for you called Archfi.

If budget allows, go for new 16 inch mbp. Otherwise it’s not a bad idea to get a used 13 inch mbp. I’m not a mac fanboy, I used hp, Lenovo, msi laptops and all of them start to have little annoying quirks after one or two years, while their customer services are not quite responsive. Picked up my wife’s 6+ year old mbp recently for travel. Did some coding in python and java, running OK. It’s not blazing fast, but I know I can trust it. And the battery can still last me more than 5 hours, after 6 years! My msi can run on battery for 20 seconds most. Yes it has powerful graphic card and bigger memory, but useless unless sitting next to power outlet all the time. Not to mention the display deteriorated much faster than mbp. A used mbp is like a used Lexus cars, still a bit expensive, not most horsepower for the money, but it’s comfortable and can go a long way.

No, unless you are planning to replace your machine every one or two years. It also depends on what your program.
@javierheng7502

Your own written programs likely won't use that much RAM. Only get it if you have other considerations like heavy video editing, need to start up multiple VMs (for hackers) or you are using your main computer as a web server (which is a bad idea due to other issues like your desktop hdd not having error correction). Otherwise, most normal people can work with 16gb (with extra space at that). If you ultimately can't decide, (and from your question and I assume you have a large budget) get a modular laptop with hotswappable RAM and SSDs/HDDs etc. (likely not a macbook)

Not very much, from my expirence you would need some decent graphic card, it's good if you have nvidia and some Intel integrated. I would say 2gb for now are still okay, and 4 would be great

Hi, Tim! In my country, I could only find an IdeaPad Flex 5 with Ryzen 5 and 16gb of RAM. I couldn't find a Ryzen 7 matched with 8gb RAM, which would be great for me as I'm on a budget but would like to have a decent processor for a future proofed machine. The one I found with Ryzen 5 is approx. 910 CAD. Do you think it's much better if I keep looking for a similar machine with Ryzen 7 and 8gb RAM?
