It’s reaffirming to hear these points. These did play a role in choosing who is doing my next tat. I’m now looking forward to the appointment on Saturday as opposed to the doubtful feelings I experienced talking to some other talented qualified artists before.

This is very helpful. Can you provide some tips on how to commission an original piece without being taken for a ride. Example, I know no one works for free so how are payment arrangements made, standard protocol for the drawing then the actual tattoo? Thanks in advance for your help.

Thats a tricky one, as each artist has their own approach, there's no universal standard. For example, I rarely, if ever, ask for deposits. That's just me though. Establishing trust before committing to a large custom work might be an idea though, so booking a smaller piece just to get some time in with the artist to get a read on their professionalism and how well you 'click' with them, before handing over a huge deposit, that could work.

@@Zombosis thank you. That makes a lot of sense. I do have a idea of what I would like to see in my larger tat. Think I will extract a smaller piece for the purpose you advised. Thanks a bunch!

I always got tattooed with the same girl, but once i went to another artist that all my friends recommended. Amazing artwork, really nice lines, everything, BUT she spended ALL the time she was tattooing me trash-talking her clients. She talked about the bad things of all of her clients, including some of my friend. She talked about how this girl was too fat, this guy was so annoying, and so and so. I don't think i'll ever go back there.

Absolutely true! I went to this one girl because a lot of my friends go to her to get their tattoos done. So my sister and I went for our tattoos. 1st of all she had the manager call us like an hour and a half before our appointment to switch it to another day, he wouldn't tell us if she was sick or what not. So we said no. I have a business so I couldn't just take another day off. She totally seemed fine btw when we got there, it also took her so long to set up, at least 50 minutes. Didn't talk to us the entire time we were there, at least four hours. So basically I'll never go back to her again. And if anyone asks about her, I tell them about my experience and let them do what they want.

It's always astonishing to me how often just little things like basic interpersonal communication gets overlooked by people in the tattoo industry. Such a small aspect of the whole, with such massive ripple effects. All I can do is shake my head.
