i bought a 1913 Eduard Reichert, and it was, truly $250au on the Central Coast NSW many years ago. I thought, 'this has to be stolen' so when they said that the lady was retiring from the orchestra and had another violin, so she didn't 'need' this one I thought I'll ask her to play it. I did, and she played about thirty seconds of The Chaconne and asked me 'Do you believe me now?' I hadn't accused her of stealing before but she obviously caught on to my thinking and I laughed and said 'Yes, I definitely do believe you'. She laughed as well. Best $250 I ever spent and I've had it for many years. Lovely violin.

1. Reputable maker/ label/ verification 2. Is the instrument made from good materials? 3 Is the instrument well- and hand-made? 4. Do you like the sound and is it powerful enough? 5. Is the instrument setup well? (Good bridge, soundpost, strings, fingerboard and nut, pegs, varnish, structure, cracks?, neck angle, do you love the violin?)

Having a pretty instrument might make me love it more. I can imagine if you paint a viol blue with white clouds it would make it harder to see cracks and stuff, but would paint on its own fundamentally change the sound?

Each layer changes the sound slightly. I plan the varnish layers as a part of making the instrument, so it has a nice clear sound. Too much varnish can dampen the sound

I bought a student violin. sounds perfect and love it. I'm an Irish fiddler. I follow tone over price but different mindsets to classical players perhaps. I love both styles

I just bought a viola a few days ago! I watched this a while ago, as well as your vids about the different price ranges of instruments, and how to try them out. As a complete beginner I was worried it would be hard to find one I loved. I went to a shop recommended by my teacher and they were so helpful! The person helping me was a cellist so she got her violinist co worker who also plays viola to play the instruments for me. She played about 4 different violas in my price range. I immediately liked the first one she played but we tried others just in case. I ended up with the first one! But I’m glad we tried the others because it cemented my opinion on the first one. Now the hard part is waiting until it’s ready to pick up in a few weeks!

@@SleepyPurpleFox Yes, that made life difficult for you. My tutor is STILL doing Zoom lessons which is not always easy. I often need him there to physically show me things but we manage. My progress has been slow but steady - my musical knowledge was zero. Spent the first 4 weeks just bowing open strings and playing pieces with those 4 notes! Moving on to 2nd and 3rd finger now. It's super, super challenging but when I get it right, it's wow! Nearly thr my first beginner book. Enjoy. Come back here in 10 years and tell me where you're at! Lol

As a complete beginner, having to buy a violin, there are no shops around here that actually sells violins, so I'll have to buy online. Any advice on what to look for when buying online, and you can't physically inspect the violin? Or any beginner 'brands' that are safer to buy than others?

Joan Frederiksen yeah! I was wondering the same!!
@AskOlaftheViolinmaker

Hi Joan, I know, that can be so difficult, because it is really important to make sure that the instruments are set up to work at their best and really make playing easy for you. One thing I personally like to do in my shop is to give players a 30 day money back guarantee, so that kind of thing is important as well. That way you can show it to your teacher and if it is a dud, you can just send it back. Also they need to have good ratings... and not just for service, but more importantly quality instruments.. I would also recommend not buying cheap violins if you can afford it, because they will just make it a lot harder to learn on. Minimum would be an instrument like the Garibaldi Vivace violin which is about $450US, because it sounds good and is easy to play, however as an adult learner I would consider looking at around $850, which is like the Garibaldi violin. These kind of instruments have natural varnish, good workmanship and materials as well as sounding amazing.

I recently bought the Helmut illner sir-B violin, I like the looks of it but I am a beginner and it sounds not bad to my ear but because it's made 2023 some days not sure if it's the weather I'm in Melbourne some days it has little scratchy sound, sometimes has like cow/bull mooing sound not sure if I explain correctly. The string I selected is Thomastik Dynamo, want to know what you think Olaf?

Congrats on your néw purchase. I think Thomastik makes some of the finest strings around. I used a set of them for two years with no problems. If it’s a brand new build, it will take a while for the woods to settle in and open up. The more you play it, the better it should sound.

But are the antique copy violins on eBay any good? I recently found some that look really nice, but are still around $500USD. And is that antique violin on eBay that costs candy but gets so many bids up to $1000USD actually a good antique violin ready for restoration?

Definitely solid spruce... The only thing that should be Laminated on a string instrument is the 3 pieces of timber that make up purfling

Great video, set up is extremely important. I started out as a guitarist and I love stringed instruments so I bought a mandolin, then eventually a violin. The mandolin was $30 usd and the violin (VSO) was $10 usd, I had never played those before so I went cheap to at least try them out. They both started out unplayable, I changed the strings and fixed the bridges on both, did a few other things like the sound post, and now they both sound decent/ good for practice. Can’t wait to get real ones, these videos are really helpful.

I would not necessarily be concerned with an original authentic label. There are many great old fiddles that have dubious labels - just part of the trade.

That is one of peculiarities of the violin trade. Value has more to do with attribution than sound. A horrible sounding instrument by an esteemed 18th century Cremonese maker in not-so-good condition will always be worth much more than a beautiful sounding instrument by an unknown maker in great condition.

V useful vid, Olaf. Have to say my rented violin is really up to scratch with all the plus points you mention and it has a lovely varnish. It's worth £700 (1,326 Aust$) and the rental cost is very affordable. I do love my BAE but in a year or so I want to buy my own so I'll bear all these points in mind. Thinking of taking a prof musician with me when that time comes...

My violin is Good but i don't like how the maker Placed the 2 F-holes farther to purfling unlike all violins out there that has closer to purfling, which can affect the placement of the sound-post and bridge. My violin sounds brighter and its hard to play sometimes, especially when double stopping, when i adjust the bridge slight closer to the bridge i feel that its very easy to play . So that mean, my violin needs to have higher tension string.😒
