One bit of gear that might be worth mentioning, that you don’t carry, is cooking gear. I like to cook dinner, and heat water for oatmeal and hot chocolate in the morning. I carry a Soto stove, iso-butane fuel canister, 1.4 liter collapsible pot, bowl, and cup, and a small fry pan (all Sea-to-Summit). I can cook pretty decent meals for less than eating in a restaurant.

Yes, absolutely, cook kit and small stove are must-haves. Not only save money over restaurants and avoid junk food at fast-food salt pits, but you also save lots of time not having to ride around looking for food places, and that extra time for pedalling really adds up.

In 1982 I rode from Miami to Seattle. Started the trip with 70 pounds (!) of gear. By the time I got to Oklahoma my gear, tools and all, were at 31- 34 pounds. My 'electronics' package was a tiny radio. I remember the song "Maniac" , perfect cadence for flying! In the morning, put some beans in a sealed vessel with some water and let them soak all day - quicker cook time. Brooks all leather saddle is heavy...and highly recommended! Book store: read the book then leave it for someone to find. Paraffin candles and a lighter. Maybe, because there are two of you, you got down to 30 pounds a piece - but I find that, with all the stuff you've shown, difficult to believe.

Google maps tried to strand me on a mountain in Japan. It was impossible to back out and my car almost fell down the mountain trying to turn around to get back down. Also took a 12 person van full of teenage girls through dirt road farmland lanes, just praying if I kept going we'd get back to the road because backing out would have got us stuck on any number of sticks/mud/potholes. I can't imagine running gmaps for a day though - it would kill my phone

Christopher, I've been running Marathon Plus tires on all my bikes since 2006. I have NEVER had a flat tire since using them. I average 1000-1500 miles per year. Here's the details of my testimony: 1. They are on my 4 year old folding Bike Friday (I ordered the bike with them from BF - 20 inch), 2. They are on my 8 year old Surly Long Haul Trucker 26" wheels (my main bike), 3. They are on my Trek Mtn Bike (not used all that much, but when used it's been rougher trails). 4. They're also on a second REI folding bike i've had for several years. 5. On top of that my wife rides my older REI Safari that I bike toured in both 2006 & 2007 in New Zealand with my very first pair of Marathon Plus, and she's still riding on those tires! 6. And finally, this is a great story, I had a second Surly Long Haul Trucker that had 700c wheels on it, which I used for street riding (which I do very little of now - too much traffic and too many distracted drivers). I had also replaced the original tires when purchased with Schwalbe Marathon Plus. I put couple thousand miles on those tires, then sold the bike to a college kid in Indiana who biked cross-country with 3 buddies... I told him the Marathon plus were bullet-proof tires, he wanted to replace them, but he wound up keeping them.... out of four guys, he was the only one with no flats across the country, and the other 3 had several flats. one cyclist I think had 6 or 7! Bottom line... I still carry a tube, a patch kit and a pump on rides... but since fitting all my bikes with Schwalbe Marathon Plus - in 12 years I've NEVER had a flat (I hope I'm not jinxing myself!!)

Great video, thanks for sharing! Lots of great advice. I use a lot of the same gear: Ortlieb panniers, Luci light, Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires, and MacBook Pro. I like to carry 3 sets of riding clothes so I don't have to wash them every day. I've found that camping out adds a lot of weight to my bike (tent, sleeping bag, extra food, cooking gear), and deprives me of a shower, so I prefer to find cheap motels. I'd love to see some tips on pumps. Most lightweight pumps only get to 50psi, and don't have gauges.

Ryan, Your videos are a joy. Most of them capture how cycling can be not only a sport or something fun, but also a part of one's everyday life. One request, when you review the checkpoint can you compare/contrast it a bit to the Trek 920? They seem similar to my very non-technical mind.

Great list, very well & entertainingly presented, thanks! Tip for hollowfiber water filters: they tend to dry up between uses when set aside for "a while" (> a week) -- if water only trickles through when you try to use it after a long pause (and you're sure it's not simply clogged by debris or silt from low-quality water sources), try to soak it fully immersed in water overnight or at least for a few hours. And i strap my solar-powered lantern on top of a bag on the bike, so it recharges during the day.

This is the most informative and "organized" what to pack for packing for cycle touring in the YTube forest. Add for sure, start simple and easy to keep clean and hygienic with the butter knife. So many are felled with gut issues not from bad water as bugs in the kitchen. As a 50+ year wilderness backpacker, I needed the shaved down to the essentials outlook for cycle touring. I was always turned off by the 4-5 large pannier hogs I see creeping through the west and wondered when the Ultralight revolution was going to sweep bike touring. That you both kept to low center of gravity Ortlieb panniers with a modest handlebar bag was inspirational. Two many bags, and they are going to get filled up with stuff. Yes I shave and keep short hair; on the trail or road, it is just healthier. With the areas you traveled this off regular touring path I would suggest a SOS messenger like an Garmin InReach or SPOTX in the wide open West without cellular coverage. I used a SPOTX for two months and three trips and such a great tool. I need to know how hard is it to find refritos west of the Mississippi?

I'm getting into bike touring and the retail market has a three piece foldable cutlery set; spoon, fork, and butter/cutting knife. Someone mentioned as for clothing, that only take up to one week's worth of clothing (for those long distant bike tours); clothing is often repeated as for wear at a week's worth of clothing. Less is better when taking to carry. Goal: Lightweight and compact.

Lorenzo Valla hello!! You gotta stay on top of saddle sores, if you start feeling an inkling of discomfort, put on some shammy butter. what do you do about your bikes as far as security? I've already had one good mountain bike stolen and I'm very skeptical of that happening again. So like when you sleep out in the middle of nowhere I know theres no room in that little tent for your bike and nowhere to lock it up. At least not if you use a u lock like i do. Maybe you use one of the longer, but easier to cut, flexible locks and lock it to a tree?

So I have a 9 year old and three teens and a large service dog. I am conditioning my 9 year old to ride and get leg strength and go further each day as I am doing the same with my service dog. I see many cylists have a tow behind to put their dog in but mine is just massive. She is 135 pounds and too large to fit and too heavy to pull. How can I ensure my service dog's safety and health when going on a short 20 mile ride. Lets face it. That is the max a 9 year old can go when just getting into this. Hopefully by next year both she and my dog will be able to go 100 miles. Any suggestions? I am really concerned though I am trying to take everything into account.

Great video and lots of good tips! How did it feel to ride with all that weight on a gravel bike using panniers on the back? I've been reading a lot regarding bike geoemtry and such things and it seems that gravel bikes are normally not ideal to carry too much weight (although you had a rather low setup). Did you feel the front end becoming "too light" or unstable in fast descents? I'm asking because I'm also planning a long bike tour across Europe with my gravel bike (Open U.P.) and would also like to do it using panniers from Tailfin. Cheers!

I know you keep calling it "seeing the world at 15 mph". In my limited touring experience, it was hard for me to make 8 mph fully loaded on the GAP and C&O Trail. Now I feel inadequate.

Phong Banh you’re not inadequate!!! :) I’d say 15 is an average over a long ride. 8 mph sounds about right for a gravel trail. Cheers buddy!

I don't average 15 on an electric bike. Rather go further than faster. - imgur.com/a/8cym1bF

Funny, I was thinking the same thing! 15mph!!, when I was in my 20s,30s,40s and even 50s Yeah! But now I'm almost 67, and my average on the rail trails I ride in Vermont is just about 10-11 average. But serously Ryan and Ali, I loved your videos, great photography and great times. I rode cross-country in 1985, we rushed because nobody had jobs (we quit our jobs to do the trip), averaged 80-85 miles per day... now I wish my old body could do it, I've got plenty of time, just an achy body! You guys are a great inspiration

Mike Howard - I’m lucky to get 11mph without full panniers. I’m also on a steel bike that’s 27lbs naked. :(

I have been curious how you manage to keep your phones cameras computers drone and anything else charged on your trip cause I never saw a solar panel on any of the videos. Must take some careful management of power on the stretches where you need to camp without power for a night or two in a row.

Hey Ryan I can't find the vide right now, but in your epic journey cross country I remember you stating that certain states allow for camping in city parks. What states are these and is Iowa one? Currently cycling across the country... (and am in Iowa) love your vids! Very inspiring.

Thanks Guys some great advice there. All I need now is the courage to set off on an adventure. Doesn't help that my wife keeps telling I am far too old & I will get killed. Mind you she has got a point as I did blow myself up in a tent once on a motorcycle tour. Hopefully you've already seen them but check out the Beard Brothers videos who tour over here in the UK your enjoy them. Safe travels & I didnt know just how much I need to cram into one life.

I have a nutcase helmet. It’s a bit warm and it’s fun. I noticed in old videos you had one. The smith helmet. Is it worth it? How much of the time do you wear a helmet and does it have MIPS?
