I think it’s cute to tell each other we’re all beautiful but I wish we allowed ourselves to just be ugly as well. I think we all know that what society calls “beautiful” only encompasses a certain number of people. The reality is that a lot of us are gonna be considered ugly and we should stop being so looks obsessed and focus on being happy and confident despite our physical appearance. ❤
@IceQueen975
Жыл бұрын
Disagree on most being "ugly"; most are *average* . Just like it's gonna be rare for someone to be pretty/beautiful, it's also rare for someone to be legit ugly. Vast majority are average. And average is fine! Why is "average" such a dirty thing?!
@doraaaa0613
Жыл бұрын
why must we call ourselves ugly in the first place? beauty is subjective and these trends prove it. going from extremely skinny bony heroin chic to BBLs and slim thick, full baby cheeks to buccal fat removal, sharp noses to flat button noses, just goes to show how impressionable our perception of beauty is because these are almost on complete different ends of the spectrum. to me beauty is a spectrum, with a wide variety of unique features and characteristics, rather than just beautiful vs ugly. our sense of aesthetics is really dependent on the era we live in. it’s up to us to call ourselves beautiful regardless and radiate that confidence from the inside, empower ourselves than just resign ourselves to being ugly. it’s hard to do it. but not a single one of us looks exactly like the other, and i think that’s a beautiful thing. let’s all be kind to ourselves ❤

I fully agree with you. Beauty as a concept and construct WILL exclude others but it shouldn’t matter because physical beauty isn’t the end all be all nor should be the focal point of one’s worth and lovability. It should be their humanity that we value the most. We should be able to call ourselves ugly just like we can be comfortable not being the best artists or the best at math. We shouldn’t fear being ugly as if our whole sense of worth and happiness relies on being naturally pleasing to the eye.

It's so dumb, if you think you're pretty, then you're pretty. That's it, that should be all there is to it. I've never been happier since one day I just decided I would tell myself I'm pretty, and now after years, nothing can change my mind. I feel confident in myself. It's still sad how much power the beauty standard has on people, especially young people. I only turn 17 this month, and I already went through this entire journey of finding self confidence, and it breaks my heart knowing so many people younger than me aren't at the point I'm at just yet.

I've always called myself forest gremlin pretty, and I think I'm really gonna stick with that. It actually makes me feel better about myself and my unique features!!! Growing up, I felt like the ugliest girl in the world for not having the most typically attractive features. I began referring to myself as a gremlin as a joke, because I felt like it fit my looks and my personality. One day, someone commented on my pic online saying that I had a very natural essence and they thought I looked like a wood elf. That comment actually made me feel uniquely pretty for the first time, and now I can look at myself with acceptance rather than with distain. We can define our own beauty, social standards be damned!
@el-erso
Жыл бұрын
omg I also grew up very insecure about some of my features, and one day for some reason I saw some humor in them, like I thought I looked funny, not in a way I thought people should make fun of me, but these things were just parts of myself that made me just not conventionally attractive, and that humor turned into acceptance, and now these are things that I like about myself and even make me feel beautiful in my own way It's a bit of a strange way to look at oneself but if we all tried fitting into one of the categories mentioned in the video it would've literally been impossible for people like me or you to feel good about ourselves and honestly it feels soo much better feeling beautiful because you're yourself rather than ticking all the boxes for being "popular pretty" or "model pretty"

In times such as ours there is a great pressure to come up with concepts that help men understand their dilemma; there is an urge toward vital ideas, toward a simplification of needless intellectual complexity. Sometimes this makes for big lies that resolve tensions and make it easy for action to move forward with just the rationalizations that people need. But it also makes for the slow disengagement of truths that help men get a grip on what is happening to them, that tell them where the problems really are.

Why do we have to be pretty. Why do we have to be a type of pretty and compare who is prettier with or without makeup. I've been insecure for years wishing I was blonde, etc Wasting so much time taking hours to get dressed, makeup, tanning. We're enough how we are. I'm not competing with this 'pretty or not' list anymore. There's so much more to our SELF WORTH than being the prettiest girl in the room. I'm turning off all the media and reading a book.

I honestly only ever saw booktok and fanfic tiktok compilations so I didn't understand why tiktok was being called dangerous now. This. When I was growing up, age less than 10, the internet trends and Bollywood and Hollywood beauty trends popularised thin body as the standard. So even if I wasn't 'beautiful', I was somewhat pretty. Growing up, I was still stuck in the thin body beauty standard when the trend shifted to curvy and hourglass bodies. And now it's going back to thin bodies. Thanks to these trends, I developed a bad relationship with food early on despite the fact that I wasn't even on social media until I was 13. This stuff comes out of the internet and exists with us in our real lives. I don't think it's only about validation. It becomes our sense of worth. It changes the way others perceive you and the way you perceive yourself. I'm an introvert. But because I'm not 'beautiful' by standards, most kids would not want to be friends with me. Yeah, this shit affects really young kids too. Like, elementary school kids. And you're left wondering why does no one like you. It's not even that deep. but it becomes deep because people associate ugly as 1) evil and 2) dirty. I wasn't either of them. I was a kid. I pushed back my comfort zone and became social to the point I am the social butterfly of my class now. I'm an introvert. Social interactions drain me. But they're also what fuel your image in public eyes if you're not 'pretty'. I remember wishing I had anorexia because I wanted to be Barbie thin (also one of the beauty standards of the time I grew up in) Barbie started declining in popularity when Frozen and Rapunzel came out. And Frozen being a feminist tale where a girl finds her one true love in her sister. That movie came and for the first time in years, decreased the popularity of Barbie whose 16 inch waist was a fucking beauty standard in itself. A doll. A fucking toy.

What I also really dislike is the video about people grading themselves.If someone says they think they're six, then in comments people be like they're humble, whereas if someone says they are a 10 then, the same those people are offended because how can someone say such thing. They don't understand that saying you re a 10 doesn't make you cocky, it just shows that you like yourself the way you are and that you've accepted yourself for who you are. Don't forget we're all a 10 and nobody's opinion does define your self worth.

Interestingly the likelihood is that you will find one that is pretty close to how you look. And then that lets you consider the standards that made that true and their style. Look for things that are potentially uplifting and not terribly downgrading with over the top critiques. It's far more mentally healthy.

Please don't us God's Name in vain, Exodus 20:7. Lord Jesus Christ is coming back everyone, please don’t worship celebrities and entertainment, focus on Him alone. I promise there’s more to life than money, partying, homosexuality and music. Hell is real, repent from sinning confess your sins and ask God to forgive you, I know He will if you’re sincere. Hell is very hot, people please repent! In the mighty name of Lord Jesus Christ, Amen 🙏💪✝️💜❤️✝️! Idolatry such as, Islam, Catholicism, Sangomaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Racism, Santa Clausism, Confucianism, New Age, Science, Evolution, halloweenism, Harry Potterism, Politics, Donald Trumpism, Easter Bunnyism and other religions/faiths that are outside Biblical Christianity lead to hell! Don’t believe them, believe the Almighty God the Father of Lord Jesus Christ, who begot Him. Our Creator, The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is mighty, He doesn’t need a woman to beget a son, He is God. I choose to put my faith in a God who can do anything and everything, a God who has unlimited and infinite power to beget! So, it’s time to confess that Lord Jesus Christ is the Lord and to believe that He died and rose from the grave after three days and you shall be saved if you only obey Him by praying, worshipping, praising, reading the Bible and living holy and righteously according to the Bible. You have to endure until the end, carry your cross daily and build your relationship with God by following Lord Jesus daily until the end. You must never renounce your faith in The Lord Jesus Christ, there’s hell awaiting those who reject/deny Lord Jesus Christ and those who continue living sinfully, even the Christians who don’t want to repent will face the same fate, so please repent beloved people, in Lord Jesus Christ’s mighty and precious Name, Amen.

As a teenager in the midst of all this despite not having tiktok, i see these trends. I absorb these trends. And Im a 15-year-old black girl, who doesn’t have any money to keep up with any of them. And I feel like If we’re going with a realistic standard, Im not gonna be any of the “4- pretty’s” and ad much as i try to accept it, when you happen to go to a school with some diversity, but not much, sometimes its really hard. I always thought that when I got older it wouldn’t matter, but no matter how hard I try, it feels like it always will. I know this seems like a really pointless rant, and there’s probably people in the comments who are going to be like “it doesn’t matter what the color of your skin is” and im going to say, that sometimes it does. It really does matter sometimes, and the beauty standards at my school, are 1. Blonde, Brown, or Black hair 2.Skinny 3. Long eyelashes 4. Be Rich 5. Have confidence 6. Be on a sports team. Thats what it’s like at my school. That’s what i have to live up to. And I shouldn’t have to. Nobody should have to. So here’s my question. Why does it matter what type of pretty we are? I thought all that was supposed to matter was personality and just how you are as a person. Sorry, i just needed to get that off my chest. Also id love to know other people’s opinion in the comments, and i hope i didn’t offend anyone, I was just saying whats one my mind about this topic.

Your thoughts are valid✨ I’m also 15 and schools seem to have more standards than countries. At my school it’s all about tanning and being as tan as you can but still “white"? Girls always complain about how ”white” they are while I’m over here 7 shades off ed sheeran 😀 Can’t wait to be out of it and get rid of the weird looks 💅

I am a little younger than 15 and I totally can relate. Having naturally red hair and not being allowed to dye it and skin that turns red no matter what i do, people will laugh and tell me my hair looks orange. They will make fun of you if you don’t like the same things as them and me liking different music and celebrities i will get laughed at.

You're absolutely right. Take it from someone who happens to be in her late 20s: as long as you're presentable (clean, affable, good-natured), you ARE pretty! It's tough being a teenager and feeling that you have to blend in, but you don't really have to. Uniqueness is pretty. I used to envy textured and colored (red/brownish) hair. I used to want to be taller and more androgynous. But those aren't me. And notice those aren't typical beauty standards. Each people has their own perception of what's pretty and it should be normalized. You have plenty of time to learn what makes someone attractive - be it rabbit teeth, wide nose, small nose, freckles, small eyes, big eyes, thin lips, big lips, idk what else society find undesirable - be assured that there will be people who find your features cute! A lot of time it's not based on standards. :)

Hi sis, I’m a 17 (soon to be 18) year old black girl. I know exactly how you feel. I was (and am still) an overweight black girl when I was 15 years old in a predominantly white school. It was rough and it wrecked my self image and confidence. I do want to tell you, though that it gets so much better. Do not compare yourself to others but find your own beauty. It truly shines from within. I consider myself to be quite pretty now but it took the work to not compare myself to other people’s beauty but to find my own instead. Remember that you are absolutely beautiful no matter what the beauty standards are. Remain confident in this fact and remember that beauty standards differ not only from society to society but even from person to person. Whatever the socially “acceptable” beauty standard is at the time, individuals still have their own personal preferences. Hence you should find your own beauty, accentuate it and rest confidently in your amazing beauty. You are an amazing person and you’ve got this! Stay strong

I once read this quote somewhere: 'You not finding me attractive is not going to stop me from being attractive," and it stuck with me so much. If all individuals, regardless of gender, adapt this mindset, nothing will stop us from being confident.

I can imagine what might come next: "what type of cute are you - spicy cute, baby cute, popular cute, or cute cute?". Society comes up with the weirdest trends to fit people in a box. This is so toxic, especially for many young girls who believe that this is all life is about. There is so much more to women than being "pretty". I don't have TikTok so I was so shocked to learn about this new "classification". In a way, I'm glad that I didn't know about it because god knows how I would have been influenced. Thank you Zoe for putting this video out there to remind us that there is so much more than what society deems us to be, and that living outside of the box can sometimes be more beneficial.

Something that feels nasty to me about the 'what type of pretty are you' trend thats going on is that all of the types of pretty feel the same??? Like they all feel like there is significant overlap between the types, to the point where I'm still confused as to where the differences are because they all feel like they boil down to meeting the same ole beauty standard in extremely similar ways. It feels like we're recycling the same old stuff over and over and over again instead of actually diversifying and dissecting what is 'pretty'.

I saw something somewhere where someone said something along the lines of “flowers are pretty but so are Christmas lights and they look nothing alike” Beauty is found everywhere and it doesn’t always look the same. There’s no need to define yourself or other people as “that type of pretty” when beauty comes in many different forms. ✨🌷💕💫 Totally love your videos Zoe!!! 💕

there's nothing wrong with wanting to be pretty, but as an indian person I feel like these trends are very eurocentric??? The "4 types of pretty trend" definitely doesn't take into account ethnic features. we'll never really be labelled as "model pretty" or "standard pretty", or even pretty at all, because our face will never be able to align with the one they've dubbed as "pretty". Beauty comes in so many forms, and it's so amazing how everyone is beautiful in their own way, just for being human. I don't get why we aren't celebrating that :(

It is so hard being told every day in every corner of the internet and trend world that I am probably ugly....or average at best. But these videos really do help me look at these things with a more critical lens, and help me remind myself that...I am human, humans don't look like Instagram/ tik tok filters, and I am beautiful to plenty of people in real life. Again it is hard, as the internet does its job well by selling whatever will grab the consumer. So no matter if I subscribe to it or not, at the end of the day I can define my beauty and I shouldn't worry if someone else agrees or disagrees with that definition.

The most scary thing about it is that 90% of those "trends" are created by young women too... Like, we're the collective who suffers the most from these but still it is mainly our "fault" to them to exist/spread through the internet. This "desire" of physically pleasing everyone around us (derived from gender inequality and the need to claim male attention to get anywhere) is so draining, yet we keep "playing the game", y'know?

yea its really sad to see that even though we are aware of what the issues are we just keep creating more. At the end of the day the more effort and time you put into your looks the prettier you will be, but it needs to be deeper than just that. if you don't have a balance you will constantly feel inadequate as you age.

I wish people would stop calling them Kylie Jenner lips because is most commonly a natural feature for Black and Latina women. These women have been mocked for these lips only for white nepo baby to get praised for injections and named after her like she invented it. Please everyone out there, please stop referring to full lips as Kylie Jenner lips because it feeds into the appropriation of BIPOC women. p.s. no hate to this video; I really love Zoe's video essays. I just wanted to share that because it is very harmful to those who naturally have these features as it erases them

Us as women are perpetrators of this. You can claim the patriarchy all day but the sad reality is women do this to each other. Most men I know just want a good woman who will love him and give him peace, that’s the average guy I don’t think it’s fair to box all men in this idea that Hollywood producers and the average guy have the same ideals when it comes to beauty. Also what is beauty or being told you are pretty? It’s either for self validation or validation from others and neither are good for us as society. We can’t blame every little thing on the patriarchy, ladies we are part of the problem.

I am a guy and i will pick up average looking women with great personality and similar interest as me over a hot narcisist.Facial structure is important for attraction but these women take it beyond to the extreme with makeups,fillers,filters.And constantly asking "How do i look babe" "do you like my eyes now""do you like this dress on me" "i grew some pimples i can't show my face without makeup" All these stress makes men miserable.If you are beautiful,you don't have to put heavy makeups to look hot.Eyeliner and lipstick is enough.And if you have long eyelashes then eyeliner is not even necessary.And you can put on lipgel and still look hot

I'm really into body types and learning about what clothing looks best on someone based on bone structure and certain features. It's really fun to research Kibbe😇 and an innocent approach to finding your style. The 80s models were know as natural body types because of their naturally athletic build making them look strong or fit some traits include: long limbs, broad shoulders, wide ribcage, straight hips, and wild healthy hair. Which would explain the use of shoulder pads and thick coats. The herion chic is often known as dramatics.. Sadly sometimes It really is just heroin; however, Kate's bones structure has always been delicate looking and that's just the features of dramatics. Long, narrow, and sharp not broad like naturals . It seems like the internet is really favoring the dramatics right now and sleek cashmere dresses. Some claim nothing looks good on them, but since I've learned abt this it's really fun to learn what designers favor body types like Chanel really likes gamines (essences) which would be lily rose depp, lily allen, and audrey Hepburn for example. The 70s is the best for naturals because of the width in clothing making a vibrant larger than life look. Standard pretty giving no explanation other than meeting the beauty standards is just absurd bc every country is different what we find standard here is unique in another country.. It has no structure or system. Ppl are lumping it all together. There's pretty based on culture and sexual dimorphism. Then there's ✨style✨ which can be anything! Then there is your pure bone structure, vertical line, and facial features. The best part is that none of this really matters unless you're into it (style, fashion, and body types) bc everyone's preferences are different.

The trend, 4 types of pretty, actually kills me. It degrades the compliment or meaning of the word "pretty". Saying that if your standard pretty, you're just a common type of pretty and nothing special. Saying that if your popular pretty, you aren't actually pretty, you just have a personality people like. Saying that if your model pretty, you're not the beauty standard, you just look... unique. And lastly, Saying that if you're naturally pretty, your face just matches the no makeup makeup look. What does the word pretty even mean anymore??

How come men never get these "beauty trends"? There are hardly any men who are judged by the looks, men don't have beauty trends, there is only a handful of very young men who are trying to get popularity by their looks on apps like TikTok, but even they look more like a joke. So why are only we women judged by looks? Why is only for us beauty considered our main value, while in men it's other things like talent, intelligence, sense of humor, good nature etc? Why do we have to abide to these forced and artificial standards and men don't? And what's even funnier, men don't even care that much about beauty when it comes to relationships with women. Sure, pretty women are fun to watch but I believe only minority of shallow and superficial men who see women as objects actually want only beautiful partner. Most normal men don't have such superficial standards and preferences about looks as those women on TikTok or other platforms are trying to force on us. Those very same young women who are very beautiful and probably are in selling make up or skin care and trying to force the idea that beauty is most important thing for our gender. How vile! Vile indeed.

This intoxicating trend of beauty made me so insecure for so long, that i became blind to my own face. Recently me and a school friend went into the city for some shopping. And i went into a game shop for a plushie that i liked. When i came out she pointed out that my interaction with the (m) clerk was peak pretty privilege. And i realised she was right when i replaced myself in that conversation with her (she's got a very 'extreem' alt look, with dyed hair, that often digusts men). He was so pleasant and apologetic to me when he did something wrong. In a way that was super over the top and unnesesairy. It was SO weird. And i never noticed it before, simply bc of the things i saw online.
