I'd also be nervous about people commenting about near-death issues with their chameleons where there's not much I can do as a person on the internet. 😥 The #1 way to prevent chameleon sickness is to have correct husbandry especially UVB (kzitem.info/news/bejne/loiM0JuXhaWIoW0) and supplements (kzitem.info/news/bejne/z4KFtHeNcqaEg3Y).

My veiled chameleon is about 14 months old. I was using the incorrect lighting system up to two months ago. My set up is not what you recommend but this is the best I could do for now until I move to a bigger apartment. My screened cage is 18“ x 18“ x 36“. My UVB light is called Zilla slimline tropical fixture and It includes tropical 25 UVB T8 and is 18 inches long. The fixture has a plastic lens over the light I know from watching your videos that the UVB cannot penetrate glass and I’m guessing plastic too. I removed the lens. Was that the right thing to do? I think it came with the lens because it shows a picture over the fixture over an 18 inch long glass fish tank type tank with a open top with no screen. I think it’s made this way so nothing could get into the light fixture like small Anoles lizards. I do have the correct heat bulb.
@NeptunetheChameleon
3 жыл бұрын
I don't think the plastic was meant to be taken off. I'd suggest using a 10/12% bulb if you are using a T8 fixture since they aren't as powerful as the T5s.

Sorry I disagree with you on having the UV light across the whole length of the enclosure. The basking zones are supposed to be whether go to heat up as they do in the wild meaning when they are heating up they also get UV rays from the sun… and proving UV light in the hot zone will also allow them to figure out where the heat bulb is as reptiles can see uv light and this confuses the reptile where to heat up if the uv is across the whole enclosure. The UV should be at the hot zone only. As too much UV exposure is also dangerous. So I’d recommend only half of the enclosure be exposed to UV light so the animal can bask under it when they need to and the other half a zone where they can get away from it. I’d recommend getting a jungle dawn led bar for the full length of the enclosure. But only half exposure with UV T5 around the full length of the hot zone. So they can choose to bask high up in the setup with & without uv

Hello! In all of my years of keeping chameleons this is the first time I am hearing of someone recommend a shorter UVB bulb. Typically the issue with over exposure of UVB is the strength of the UVB bulb, not the size of it. With a large enough enclosure a chameleon will be able to choose to go in and out of the UVB by going higher or lower in the enclosure or hanging out in a bushy plant. I've had my enclosures set up like this, along with thousands of other keepers, and none of the chameleons have had any issues finding their heat bulbs due to the having a UVB bulb across the whole enclosure. I am alway wanting to learn more about chameleons so can you please share the scientific sources you have that support your claims? And I do already have a Jungle Dawn LED light on my enclosures and absolutely love it!

Hi, I don't know what better way to ask this, so I am asking here in the hopes that you will respond like you have to others :) I love your content, but I do have a problem. I'm an admin of a couple chameleon forums and have had a few of our members coming to me concerned by what they've seen in some of your recent videos. They have veiled chameleons, and we recommend T5 10.0 or T5 12 % uvb as part of an overall husbandry guideline for veileds, and advise that owners of other species may also use them so long as they provide ample shade, and cage space (which is also mentioned in our resources). After seeing your tik tok that recommends 5.0 or 6% and the follow up comments where you say that t5 is too strong to use without a solar meter, that they need to be lifted an undetermined distance off of the cage, and that "Chameleon facebook groups have nothing to back their claims", I'm asking you to back up yours. Veiled chameleons are in a higher Ferguson zone than panthers and many other chameleon species. They're in zone 3, which has a basking UVI of 2.9 to 7.4. Panthers, being in an intermediate zone between 2 - 3, bask at 3.0 UVI. A t5 10/12 gets you a basking UVI of between 3-5 at 8-10 inches through standard aluminum mesh (like what's on reptibreeze and exo-terra screen cages). As you know, under exposure to UVB is a more prevalent problem for captive chameleons than overexposure. Skin cancer and radiation burns are far less common than MBD, and even hypervitaminosis D3 (providing too much dietary d3). They are prone to thermal burns, because the nerves that would detect a burn are not close enough to the skin surface to alert their brains to the burning temps, until it's too late. They can however detect UVB AND their own d3 levels. Dr Ferguson conducted a study in either 2006 or 2009 where it was found that panther chameleons adjust their basking behavior in accordance to how much d3 they received in their diet. They know when and how much to bask. We just have to give them both enough UVB for full d3 synthesis and enough shade to allow them to regulate their own UV exposure and d3 levels - which they do better than us and our d3 powders. While yes, a chameleon can be exposed to too much UVB, the 10.0 or 12 do not pose much more of a risk than the 5.0 or 6. There is a chance of overexposure from a 5.0 if the animal basks too close to the light. Same for 10.0. The "safe basking distance" depending on species, only differs by a few inches between the two bulbs. However, a veiled chameleon will need to get much closer to a 5.0 or 6% to get the 3.0-7.0 uvi they need. Solar meters are great. People should have a solar meter, or at least a good understanding of ferguson zones, and what bulbs and configurations provide the right UVI for the species they have. I know you have videos like this that provide explainations, but your shorts and tik toks leave a lot of important info out, and make broad generalizations that simply don't apply as implied. For example, your responses in tik tok comments; "Thats out of date information. Using a 12% or 10.0 is too much UVB if you're also not using a solar meter" , "the facebook groups do not have any data to back up their claims" We do have data. We readily provide it to anyone who asks, which is what I did today for one of our members who was very worried after you told them that their 10.0 UVB was too strong, even though you didn't know how what the basking distance was, or how big or well planted the viewers enclosure was. You know that there is way more to this than holding up a couple bulbs and saying "this is the uvb chameleons need" and I'm basically writing this to ask that you don't produce videos that omit important details due to a platform's time constraints. Where is your data? Why aren't you warning people that a 5.0 can cause the same damage 10.0 can?
@NeptunetheChameleon
2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for your comment and the time involved -- very well written! First off I want to apologize for my comment regarding the chameleon Facebook groups. It was based on my past experiences with Facebook groups that did not provide any backing for their claims and made new keepers felt shamed and awful which is not something I would ever stand by. That being said, it sounds like your FB group is doing a much better job of educating and I commend you for that. I think 12% or 10.0s can safely be used for chameleons (I've used them myself with my solarmeter). But I would not feel comfortable recommending a 12% on a platform where most of the viewers are new to the hobby, and still need to gain an understanding of the intricacies of UVB, UVI, and supplementation. The unfortunate reality is that a lot of viewers on TikTok are kids who buy the kits and are using enclosures that are 30" tall or smaller so recommending as 6%/5.0 along with a 48" tall enclosure is a much better option in my eyes than recommending a 12%/10.0 and not having the ability to see how the rest of the enclosure is set up. You asked why aren't I warning people the 5.0 can cause the same damage 10.0 can, and the answer is I do -- all of the time. I always try to express the importance of both over and underexposure to UVB when messaging directly with new keepers. I post hundreds of videos and get thousands of comments and messages and I try to respond to every single comment because I think it is important the hobby has representation on a platform with millions of viewers. Instagram and KZitem allow for detailed responses, but TikTok is constraining due to character limits and the lack of ability to send pictures. Had that comment been on a different platform, I would've been able to ask about basking distances, coverage, etc. but that's not feasible on TikTok so I try to provide the best answer possible with what little info I am given. TikTok is not an ideal platform for detailed conversations between experienced keepers. It's a great opportunity to help people realize that maybe what they're doing has room for improvement and point them to a platform where they can get the information they need -- like KZitem. I didn't mean to cause anyone to panic or ruffle any feathers with that video. I'm trying my best to share knowledge about chameleons and am not always able to think of every way that video could be interpreted. My target audience for that video was keepers using compact bulbs. I think there is an opportunity to take advantage of video captions to help add any additional context that is needed in a video moving forward. Hope my response helps clear the air a little bit 💚

Thank you so much for your reply and for the clarification When someone has a cage thats too small, we don't tell them to get a UVB light to account for the inadequate cage size. We tell them to get a bigger cage, and what UVB works best for that properly sized cage and that species. Most new keepers start with compact florescent UVB, and we don't tell them to just give their animal d3 supplements every day to make up for the lack of UVB, we tell them to upgrade to T5HO. There's a lot of interdependent factor... I just don't think tik toks or yt shorts are a good way to introduce people to chameleon husbandry. It's oversimplified and incomplete. Now, about the UVB its self. The problem with t5 5.0/6% for veileds is that the UVI sweet spot (3-5) from a 5.0 lamp is much smaller and much closer to the light than it is with a t5 10.0/12. If anything using a 5.0 for a veiled, without a solar meter to find that small specific area where UVI is adequate, is more dangerous than just slapping a t5 10.0 up there and only adjusting basking distance for heat. Panthers and many other cham species are in lower Ferguson zones, and can make all the d3 they need basking in a UVI between 1-3. The distance range of 1-3 UVI from a 5.0 is substantial, leaving lots of space to adjust for basking temps. UVI 3 isn't the max for these or any chameleon species. Most chams come from the equator, they know how to deal with very high UVI - we just need to give them access to shade as well so they can regulate their own d3- as they are way more precise at that than we ever will be. Because chameleons are proven to be able to sense UVB better than temps, and can sense how much d3 they have and therefore need, its much better to provide them with too much UVB (plus ample access to shade) than it is to play it safe and risk not offering enough. They know when to move out of the UVB when they've had enough. Thats why, in the decade I've been heavily active in the online chameleon community, I have yet to see one T5 UVB related injury, amongst the thousands of thermal burns and MBD cases I've seen, that couldn't be attributed to a known manufacturing flaw in the bulb. I've actively looked for examples from the community many times, and even contacted Dr. Frances Baines about a problem she reported with T5 UVB when the tech was still very new. She hasn't seen a case of radiation burns from normal use of T5HO in almost a decade and a half. She helped develop the solar meter, and most look to her for the go-ahead before using any new reptile lighting tech. I asked all the groups I'm in. Spoke to vets, breeders, reptile rescues, asking any of them if they have ever of a t5 causing injury with normal use. I haven't found a single case. Only one where the owner put the t5 uvb in the hospital bin with the immobile chameleon they were rehabbing, instead of over top. Not being able to move out of the way, and because the light was 6 inches from the animals face, without screen to filter out 30% of the light, the chameleon developed a radiation burn on their face. I'm still looking for cases, because I want to stay on the cusp of chameleon care info as it becomes available, and I want to investigate new claims... and that's why I'm hear talking to you right now. Again, thank you for your time. I hope this shined some light on the 5.0 vs 10.0 UVB for chameleon debate, and help ensure your audience has access to the most up to date and complete info available, because I know that is your main mission as a content creator. I love your content. Aside from a few details, you're a shining beacon of of good info in the cham world, and do a wonderful job of representing these animals, on youtube especially.

Keep in mind, what works for one keeper may not work for your set up, and that there is a lot of incorrect information out there on chameleons. Depends what kind of T8 bulb and the size of your enclosure. T8s are older technology and aren't as efficient as a T5 bulb and don't penetrate as far into the enclosure as a T5 does.
