Upper 50s lad here, and I've been whole-foods, entirely plant-based for just over five years now. My vegan pet-peeve is of those people who decide to go vegan and then discard all their leather products. I find that totally disrespectful to the animals. Here a cow has to endure a living nightmare beyond belief, has it's hide turned into leather, only to have some person toss it, because he or she is now vegan. Since you already have the leather products, at least get the best use out of it that you can until the leather item is completely worn. But don't just flippantly toss it. How wasteful, and how utterly disrespectful to that poor cow.

We aren’t vegan, but 95% of our meals are. When we made the decision to change our diet 7 years ago, my partner didn’t want to give up fish. So we have fish twice a month at most. We tell others we are eating with that we are vegan, so we don’t have to go through an explanation of what a dairy-free pescatarian eats, or risk someone serve us fish with dairy, etc. I look at it in the sense that we are making a difference with our diet, and we feel a hell of a lot better than we did prior. Gatekeeping sucks, and trying to call out people that are living their life, creating great content and recipes (freely) that benefit many also sucks. A lot of people would be happier if they spent more time looking for the good, or appreciating people, than trying to tear them down. Myself included. Thanks Derek, I appreciate the recipes and openness you bring to your videos.

Thank you so much for this! I went vegetarian in 1983 (I was 12), for the animals. By 1985 I was vegan. I wavered back-and-forth between vegetarian and vegan for a couple of decades, but have been committed to plant-based for about 10 consistent years now. I also hate using the word. “vegan“ because it’s so loaded and people get so offended! I have been hearing vegan and vegetarian jokes and theories about anti-veganism my whole freaking life! I’ve literally heard it all. I only know a few vegans and none of us bash other people for eating meat, yet people automatically get defensive as if we will. It’s so strange. I really don’t care what other people eat-if it makes them feel good, and I don’t believe bullying people into doing ANYTHING it’s EVER going to be effective. Being plant-based is a personal choice and a personal journey. When people ask me about being vegan, I’ve even stopped answering-I just tell them to go to websites or watch documentaries like “Cow because I’m not trying to convince anyone of anything! And I never did try to. I am vegan for the animals. I am vegan because personally I just can’t stomach the idea of eating meat. That’s my personal decision. There are no perfect vegans. That’s ridiculous. I could go on and on about why there are no “perfect” vegans… there are so many things that people have no idea aren’t actually vegan and it’s mind blowing… Just to name one… Pepto-Bismol! 😮 But I’m not going to waste my time listing everything. Also… Vegans can be overweight/obese! Sometimes it is about diet (vegan junk food is extremely prevalent now-it was not in the 80s/90s), but a lot of the time it can be about genetics or menopause or stress or insomnia or hormones or other countless things. People just need to stop judging each other 😡. We’re all just doing the best that we can. Even if you only eat a few vegan things, or vegan once a week, or just keep an open mind. And I do think it’s true that a lot more people would be vegan if they had to kill and butcher their own meat every time they wanted to eat it. People used to grow, raise, prepare their own food. Grocery stores and markets are awesome for convenience… But they should not be used at the expense of being capable of growing and creating your own meals. I commend you for your compassion and strength. Thank you! 💚🌿

And they are starving, suffering because we are dosing them with toxins (pesticides), leaving the soil bare (conventional agriculture practices), destroying their homes (by tilling), and everything that grows from that soil that is pollinated, eating those plants and the animals that eat those plants, ultimately-us a humans suffer the chronic consequences. What can we do to combat climate change and food waste? Turn food scraps into a resource. Save those frayed onions in a freezer bag along with other peels, skins, roots and when that freezer bag is full, make a vegetable stock. Then put those scraps into compost. These days there are small appliances that enable you to compost indoors without odor. Look them up.

Couldn't agree more. Vegan/vegetarian eating is not about purity or shame. It's not a religion. It's about acknowledging that causing suffering and harm against a being that can't consent (or hasn't consented) to the risk of harm is bad. Reducing suffering to the extent of your ability is good. Harm reduction. Ending needless suffering. That's the whole deal. No one gives a sh*t about your purity. Help people on their journey; don't tear them down for not walking fast enough.

Hey, I found your channel only yesterday and hadn't heard of you before (why, oh why, where did you hide all the time?) so I was not sure what to expect of the title. Could be the random anti vegan rant or a fellow vegan using the title for clickbaiting. What a pleasant surprise to find such a compassionate, calm and peaceful person. Combined with true chef skills. Plus a dog. What a gem. Love the sandwich salad spread, love the channel, everything. 🤩

I experienced this when I worked at a health food store. I was trying to sample vegetarian chicken or vegetarian beef and meanwhile vegans were like pushing that down people's throats and it just made it seem unattainable to certain people

Thank you for sharing this. I am newly vegan for all the right reasons, it has been such a struggle but finally glad I made it. People can be so judgmental. Everyone will catch on at some point. ❤

Lovely sandwich! I'll be trying it soon. Yes, people will be less likely to listen or not listen at all when we get angry or judgemental. Everyone is so angry and upset and so much anxiety everywhere. More listening and creating space to be better people. I am not vegan currently but I am focused on being more and more plant based. Maybe I'll go all the way some day and maybe I won't. Thank you for your generosity of time and spirit and knowledge.

it is also about the way the vegetables are handled. To keep the crunch in this chickpea salad, a bit larger chunks of cabbage are better In a noodle salad, very fine shredded cabbage works better. And for kids who refuse to eat vegetables (because some do), perhaps pureed stuff is the way to go.

My sister has been vegan for about 20 years now and I eat everything. I do enjoy a lot of plant based food though, because I like to be reasonably healthy and I like to eat stuff that tastes good. I've learned so much about plant based cooking from my sister and I love eating good food. Glad you're on the same plane as her. I love my sister very much

Thanks for sharing these comments Derek. I've been plant based for 40 years and have stopped referring to myself as Vegan. I totally agree that Vegans attacking other Vegans or non-Vegan is simply not showing compassion.

Thank you for the inspiration, best Veg Sandwich recipe I ever saw. For easier digestion, might it be an idea to let the red cabbage rest with some salt first and give the chickpeas a short boil to ensure „softness“? Regards, Oliver

I’m definitely an imperfect vegan/plant based eater. My husband is a decided omnivore, so we have animal products in our house. We have meals that are completely free of all animal products that he loves but he’s just not at a place where he can give them all up. I feel that how we approach our meals works for us. While we will most likely never completely eliminate all animal products in this house, how we approach food overall has helped animals, the environment, and our health.

Glad you spoke about compassion Derek! It's so counterproductive for a vegan to be unkind to others. Humans deserve compassion too. I tell non vegans if you can try a meatless monday and a vegan tuesday it will help you, the animals and the planet! It's a start. Vegan for 10 years and vegetarian for 5 additional years. Almost 60 when I started.

I like your compassion speech, can relate ;) even meat eater or total vegan, we shouldn`t be hating each other for our own food making choices done based on each and everyone`s different health state, mind, eco, bio, values, culture... driven decisions.

re your rant: I came to not eating meat by a different route. Over 40 years ago I had a summer job at a fast food place and had to stand next to a grill of beef burgers the entire day. I grew to loathe the smell of beef so much that I couldn't stomach eating it at home. Still a teen, but responsible for cooking/planning most of the meals, I found that when I removed beef from meals, I felt lighter and less sluggish after supper. It was a slow and years long process, but as the pork and chicken left the meals I felt better. I credit a balanced long term way of eating to Frances Moore Lappe book, "Diet for a Small Planet". I think a slow approach to changing the way one eats works best rather than a "jump in the deep end" all or nothing way. I'm still adjusting how I eat...older now and needing to make ever calorie consumed be the best for my body. It seems to be working for myself and my partner. We seem to be the only ones in our friend group to not be overweight or struggling with that.

thanks for sharing! Derek 😊 I love this recipe & the sauce is brilliant. I have your cookbook! I love your recipes. I can't wait to make this for my family. ❤ I agree! Everyone is on different levels and there should't be any judgement. More people are trying to go more plant-based and respecting the animals. ❤ My husband & I & son are vegitarians/ and we occasionally eat fish. I was completely vegan for many years however, I had some health issues, suffer from asplastic anemia and had covid , ovarian cysts. I was guided by my spiritual guides recently around 6 months to start eating occasionally organic free run eggs & wild salmon. My body needed vitamins and the animal spirit wanted to help me. I love & respect the animals very much. ❤ I researched were the farms before buying, so I know that the chickens are looked after and respected. I thanked the animals for helping me, as my health has improved. I'm psychic medium / empath/ Angelic channeler / and learning about energy healer & hypnosis. I had visions of the animals spirit chickens who lay the eggs, there were so happy to help me and give me norishment and salmon spirit too. I could feel high vibration from the animals spirit, and my DNA cells being refreshed. I feel that's what animals are here to teach us all , they just want to be respected & loved.❤ When humanity has learned this, we will more towards a more loving compassionate civilization and evolve all eat plant based society. I thought to share! More people are waking up spiritual, we are all ONE and moving to a higher vibration of mind, body, spirit of unity consciousness, moving to the 5th dimension ❤ 🌎 ❤🌟 We are so loved by spirit❤ And we are never alone of our soul journey on this Earth school. much love, blessings to you & Frankie form Toronto Canada Namaste 🙏 ❤🌟 😇 🌟
