Asparagus, nice. It’s slow to get going and will need a few years before you develop a good crown and start producing edible spears. Once you get there though you will be eating from the same plants for about 15yrs. It’s awesome and everyone should grow asparagus. Also good to see someone else here in NW Scotland too 🏴

I liked watching this. I’m just starting a proper garden this year in Fife. Could you post more with information on how you do things, please? How do you take out the seedlings and plant them? How do you decide where things should be planted? What do you do about the slugs and snails? How do you take care of each of the different things you plant out? Looking for all the help I can find! 🍓🐌🌱🌻

So glad you enjoyed the video. I have a garden playlist that I'm adding to with more updates for you and will give you an idea of what I do in my garden. Well done for getting started. I've found gardening in Scotland has been lots of trial and error, as our weather can be so random and frustrating at times. Over the last 3 years, I've tried out square foot gardening, companion plant etc, and again I think sometimes it's trial and error, with a good splash of patience and then more research. As for slugs and snails... I've tried loads of things, copper tape, egg shells, traps, and none of it seems to help, I've even resorted to going in the garden at night with a head torch and just picking them off the veg and plants... It's an on going battle. Just keep going, it's totally worth all the effort.

I’m a brand new gardener too (north east highlands near Elgin). My whole garden was almost destroyed by something eating the leaves. I found tiny green caterpillars all over my broccoli when I harvested. Ew! I don’t like using anything toxic and I tried so many things, and the final thing that helped was soapy water in a spray bottle. Since I started doing that every week, things are growing again. I avoid spraying the veggies and flowers (just the vines and leaves). Am I slowly poisoning myself this way? Most of my plants couldn’t be saved but my peas, a few flowers are doing well, and the bushes/trees are fine.

Love you garden. & the color of your hair. I’m from the US. Live in missouri. I e been interested in gardening since I was a boy growing up on my uncle’s farm. I’m watching how you plant your seeds. Not that much different as we do here. My name is Joseph Davidson. Yes the name comes from Scotland. I plan on visiting in a few years. I have a small back yard. I need to get the trees trimmed so I can get more sun in the back yard. Good luck with your garden. Question you have any problems with animals?? Joe

@@Moggybox Unfortunately vegetable growing in Scotland on KZitem isn't as common as vegetable growing in other areas of the UK. I think I might consider starting a KZitem channel focusing on growing vegetables and fruits at my allotment in the North East of Scotland. Give a like everyone who would want me to set up my own vegetables and fruits growing KZitem channel the more likes the more chances of me doing it.

Hi there, just wondered how you could advise me I’m in the Scottish Borders and plan to do raised edges in my garden this year. How can you advise me?X
@Moggybox
Жыл бұрын
Aw fab!! What would you like help/advice with specifically? When starting off my garden I did a lot of research on what would would work best for growing veg in a cold climate, and on what I planned to grow. For me it seemed best to have 3 raised beds so I could rotate what I grew in each one, as a general rule you want to rotate your legumes, root veg, brassicas and fruit, but I grow all my fruit, like strawberries in hanging planters, so I decided 3 raised beds would work best for me (You generally don't want to grow the same veggies in the same place every year, rotating will help the soil replenish nutrients that the last crop has used), that being said, I have started avoiding brassicas because they need alot of space, and I don't get so much bang for my buck so to speak, I'd rather use the space for veg that I can grow lots of in a small space and stores well, like carrots and onions. I think the bottom line is, choose veg/fruit that you enjoy eating and would get the most benefit from, then research what you want to grow and decide if it's suitable to grow in our climate, and which 'family' it falls into for rotation and how much space it will need and then plan and build your raised beds accordingly. I hope that's helpful, I look forward to hearing how you get on. Here's to a successful gardening year!😀

Hi Moggy, I have just taken up gardening after my wife had a stroke, I have build a cold frame and a clothe and have planted some garlic which are growing fine, some runner beans, but some seam to have frost bite (black leaves) - Question - should I remove the damage from the runner bean stock, or should I dig the damage ones out and throw onto my compost heap? What else can I put under the clothe of my raised bed at this time of the year? Many thanks!
@Moggybox
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Alan, thanks for your message and sorry to hear about your wife. I find gardening such a relaxing hobby, I wish I could offer some better advice but unfortunately I've only tried to grow runner beans once, although with other types of peas and beans I find when they die back that's the end of them, I usually plant new. At the moment it's pretty cold in Scotland so I'm not planning on planting anymore now until spring, so It depends where you are and the weather you've got as to when to start growing. I've got winter veg growing - garlic, carrots, beets, onions but got them planted before the first frosts of winter, so hopefully will get a spring crop. Roll on the spring months and we can get growing again.
