Well done. My brother and I worked on Purple Rain as grips & later on many vids and films at Paisley Park. I could not believe how shy and kind Prince was to all the crew. Then watching him perform at 1st Ave he became the greatest showman and guitar player I'd ever seen.

This interview had me riveted and I can't wait to see the rest. Make them as long as you need to. We will watch! You were fantastic letting him talk, not interrupting. Only one other musician-interviewer does that (Rick Beato) and watching both of you interviewing experienced/"famous" folks is a joy. Some people make it so uncomfortable for the guest, it sends me away, stressed for them. Thank you so much for this coup! More well-known artists/songwriters/musicians need to find you. I am sure they will!

Well, first of all I'm in my 70's. I guess some would call me an old woman. I've always loved music, even though I can't play or sing worth a dime. I do know good music, and we can all recognize good talent. I respect Fil for his many talents, and his teaching ability is outstanding. The one thing that means so much to me regarding Fil is his professionalism. No cussing or vulgar language which is absent from his channel, is very much appreciated coupled with loads of respect for him. Thank you, Fil, for being respectful towards your audience. Bad words have been around forever, I get that, but it isn't necessary for all of us. So again, thank you so much for being a gentleman.

So, that's interesting. Prince wanted to use the electronics because he knew the fans wanted to hear something close to the album which isn't realistic to do live with many studio tracks. Besides not liking to perform live anymore, The Beatles found there was no way to faithfully play their later music live. It's an interesting question as to whether a fan would want to hear a stripped down version that is completely live or something that sounds close to the studio track with a lot of digital sound reinforcement.
@Whistler4u

Prince's live versions were nothing like the studio versions except for the needed samples and loops. That's why he never used a sequencer. btw Check out The Analogues if you wanna hear The Beatles live (almost) like the studio versions.

Wow... I can't believe that those 25 minutes flew by so fast. I was completely riveted by Morris, and everything he had to say. You are so great at conducting your interviews. You ask the perfect question, then allow your interviewee all the time they need to answer. Too many interviewers insist on constantly jumping in and trying to insert themselves into the interview too much. You were gracious enough to let Morris have the floor. I know you said that you had some issues during the interview because of Morris's wonky internet connection, but you were definitely able to edit around that, and give us 25 minutes of great stories by Morris. I'm definitely looking forward to the rest of the interview. Loved hearing him talk about how much you had impressed him with your guitar playing during your Prince video. Morris is a personal friend and I’ve had the chance to collaborate on things with him. I can tell you that apart from being a first-rate player and technician he’s just an amazingly kind person. It’s so cliche to say “he’s got a big heart…” But it fits - Morris has got a big heart. He’s also got a playful sense of wanting to try things and learn things and it makes him great to be around. I mean - imagine - he’s there in the studio with Prince and Prince wants to try something different… You can’t say “NO!” You have to try and that experimentation made him who he is today. Just a great, great guy! ❤❤❤

Love Prince. But I kind of drifted away from his music after Under the Cherry Moon and didn't really explore others in the Minneapolis Sound. After his death I got back into his music and saw what I was missing. All to say I'm not real familiar with Mr. Morris's work, but it's cool that we are from the same area--I grew up about 50 miles south of where he was and very familiar with his early influences. Enjoyed the interview and looking forward to the second.

This was a great interview and because of your musical acumen, you were able to bring forth new perspectives on Prince's approach to writing, producing, and performing. I have no idea how this got pass me (probably just work), but something told me to read my notifications and I see Morris Hayes - arguably the best champion for Prince outside of Dr. Funk and Morris Day. In addition, I noticed after watching all four videos that Morris Hayes really geninuenly respects and likes you. He read your body language, voice tone, connected with your questions, and provided space for you to frame thoughtful responses. This 4-part series was two musicians talking what they know and as a Prince Day 1 diehard "friend," I appreciate this interview (in all stages) so much. Your music analysis of various artists is amazing!

Very interesting! I was impressed by what I will describe as Morris's cool flexibility during performances. Nothing like major changes during sound check to make the already full memory banks (keyboard and human) go a bit overloaded! Also, I had to laugh when he recalled suggesting to Prince that a set list would be helpful! Great point, too about needing to able to play without electricity if need be. The early days of computers and software were already hard enough. Convincing the artist that he should not get too creative during performances when everything was all programed and set up had to be a challenge. You guys rock. Fil, this was really fun and I look forward to part 2.

Hey "BRO!" Fil, you're a "BRO" and one of the "CATS"! COOL!! WHAT AN HONOR! What a great story! THE SHOW MUST ALWAYS GO ON! I was in a troupe and the day before a performance the leader/owner laid into me about something in front of EVERYONE HUMILIATING ME. I think she really wanted me to do a solo performance coming up with my own song and directing. She was testing me to see if I'd show up for the gig the next day after the tirade. I did. THE SHOW MUST GO ON. CAN'T LET MY MATES DOWN. THERE WAS CHOREOGRAPHY, PAID PERFORMANCE. SAME WITH MORRIS. His was on a GRAND SCALE, PRINCE. I was curious about Morris Hayes and saw this interview. He was at Taj Farrant's show tonight and played a song with him. He came to one of his shows earlier to see him play and met up with him at NAMM and played Purple Rain with him at his House of Blues show and The Sky is Crying tonight. I thought it was interesting when he talked about Prince having to tune the guitar onstage but did it as part of his solo was great. What was interesting, tonight Taj's guitar went out of tune when he started playing I believe Electric Gypsy. He just tuned the guitar while he continued to play the song and didn't miss a beat. There were a few sour notes. I thought something was wrong but it was cleared up right away. I don't think a lot of people would have noticed if he hadn't mentioned it at the end of the song. I knew Morris played with Prince and a number of other musical greats. I just wanted to hear some of his stories. I love this interview, thank you! Who knew, two of the people you interviewed, a new artist and a veteran, this year would meet, become friends and perform together! Love your channel.
