*The daily life of a landed knight when not at war:* - You wake up. - If any are applicable: tell your wife, daughter(s), squire, or servant(s) to prepare some food to eat if they haven't already. - Go outside to take a dump/piss. - Wash your hands, face, and hair with cold water. - Possibly bathe too if it's that day of the week (depending on the time period and your location, you may be bathing more or less often than this). - Go inside and eat something. - Speak to your wife and children, while handling any of their complaints as you see fit. - Order your squire with the daily tasks. - Handle any of the servants' complaints as you see fit (although this is typically your wife's duty to handle for the most part). - Go outside to train (optional) and train your squire too if you feel like it (even more optional) - Go to castle courtyard, town square, or wherever your place of employment is to converse with fellow knights of your station. - If your lord has any tasks for you, carry them out and do your duty with honor and due diligence. - Tell your squire to have food prepared, or go to the castle kitchens/local tavern to eat. - Train yourself, your squire, or perhaps any men-at-arms if you feel like it (still optional). - If you have already carried out all your duties according to your lord's will, your time should now be your own. So these next four are completely optional possibilities. - Go to local tavern to drink and converse with other knights and patrons. - Pray at the church, and perhaps study if you know how to read. - Spend money at the local brothel. - Train for any nearby tourneys coming up. - Go home. - Speak with your wife and children; the servant(s) too if you feel like it. - Handle out any punishments if there's any need for it. - Eat dinner. - Prepare for bed. - Make love to your wife as God intended. - Go to sleep. - Rinse and repeat daily schedule, with only minor changes for the most part. And as time passes, your lord should eventually tell you to raise the banner for war. Sometimes even the Church might call upon all those who are devout and righteous to reclaim the Holy Land or some other land held by heathens (it's completely optional, unless your lord has ordered you to follow him there). These will take up a lot of time, but don't happen as frequently in one's lifetime as one would think though.

In an alternate universe, the battle between saracens and crusaders was decided by one thing. Pommels. The saracens decided to use as many small curved weapons on themselves to maximise pommels. However, the crusaders used swords with multiple pommels onto it, having thrice as many pommels as the enemy, and such, the first crusade was won. They employed trebuchets with very large pommels as projectiles, that being bought with pommelons, coins shaped like pommels.

You should check out the channel shadiversity, as he talk mostly about this topic and medieval history and warfare in general. There are two things I think you might got wrong: 1) There were no real code of chivalry in medieval times. This idea came much later when knights where stopped being a warrior class. The term chivalry in the middle ages were first used to describe a good horseman, and later a good knight, and what make a knight a good knight was a matter of personal taste. 2) Knights as we know them came before holy orders. Even during Roman times, you had to be rich in order to be a horseman, and that became much more true in the middle ages. This is because taking care of a horse is fucking expensive. This meant that horsemen were the elite of the army, and with how unorganized early feudal system was lords wanted to make sure that those elite were loyal only to them, so they made them to swear loyalty. Up until later holy orders, being a knight meant being a horseman that is bound in service to a lord.

As far as I'm informed, the Catholic church came up with the code of chivalry to put an end to knights raiding the lands, in exchange for that they said the knight-class is made by god. Most importantly though, a knight was at first only a vasall of a duke or higher who was given a piece of land and everything on it including the peasants in exchange for his services as soldier and other symbolical services.

Fun fact: towards the very end of the era of knights, it wasn't terribly uncommon for knights on horseback to use guns, especially with the creation of the wheelock carbine around the end of the 1400's/beginning of the 1500's; as this version was easier and safer to use on horseback. But, since there were also unmounted riflemen whom could be just as, or far more, accurate as knights; they were soon phased out.

Why let the strict code of chivalry get in the way of a good crusade?!
@ivanstrydom8417
4 жыл бұрын
Christopher OBrien the code of chivalry was created by the leaders of the first Crusade. It was their emphasis of protecting the Christians from Constantinople to the Levant because Sljuk Turks started to raid, attack and kill unarmed Christians that have been traveling between Contantinopel and Jerusalem for 500 years up to that point. Knights fighting other Christian Knights would attempt to capture their foe , in doing so, they would ransom him for money, you can't exactly hold a corpse for ransom. Only when fighting a solder from a forren standing, such as a Muslim fighter did the knight know his life would not be spared if he were to be defeated, so in turn he fought to kill his opponent in order to preserve his own life and those he swore to protect.

I know you're not an expert in medieval warfare, but most soldiers wore gambeson under the mail, which is like a very thick coat able to deflect sword blows. Also, mail was useful against arrowfire, it is a LOT stronger than most people think. Like you said, later on plate became more and more common as time went on. Plate was pretty much immune to blows from swords and arrows, but it was NOT immune to blunt weapons like maces, warhammers, the backside of most axes and polearms, and lances used on horseback. A knight had a LOT of armor because well, they were elite warriors during the late middle ages.

Funfact: A squire spent the whole night prior to the knighting ceremony in their chambers, not sleeping, but rather praying. To stop the prayer and go to sleep was seen a sign of ineptitude and as soon as someone came over to get said squire for their ceremony, the squire was expected to be seen kneeling and praying. What happened to those who were tempted by the bed and went to sleep largely depended on their liege's decision.

I believe the reason plate armor was developed was not because of wanting to be protected against arrow fire, chainmail was able to do that, but because of the very thing you mentioned knights did in combat, a lance charge. Chainmail could not with stand the force of such an attack, which is why plate armor was needed.

Heya cody. I believe it must be clarified that chivalry was not something what was written down at the time. It was more of a loyalty to your lord and a chivalrous knight could just mean "He does what his lord tells him". In later periods, this would become something more. A few misconceptions here and their about medieval warfare too but apart from that, good video.

The daily life of a knight in the Middle ages followed a similar schedule to that of his lord or the noble he served. The Daily life of a Knight during the Middle ages centered around castles or Manors or fighting for his lord and the King during times of war. Much of his time was spent on honing his weapons skills and keeping his levels of fitness high. The daily life of knights can be described as follows:

Your summary of the change between 18 to 21 was fantastic! I actually made a video on the topic a couple years back and I really liked your summary; hit the nail right on the head! I especially like how you made sure to note that it was tied to road funding since the repeal of the 21st amendment granted power over the drinking age back to the states so there was no way for the federal government to dictate the age specifically. I probably should have been more clear that 21 was not the default but that its selection once the age was to be changed was not purely arbitrary :)

Let's not forget Europe had historically had a low population density so lords didn't just throw their servants lives away unlike in China or Japan. I fly under the code of knighthood. It's no surprise since we soldiers are the descents of Belkan knights. We protect the meek and give our lives for honour. But that does not mean we are generous, since generosity will cost us our lives.

Pretty Interesting. Should 'Knight' Training, the Page, Squire, & Knighthood, be Implemented for individuals that we'd find in "Stan Lee's Superhumans" from the History Channel?

I'm not biased against KnowledgeHub (lot of cool videos here that I binge-watch on), but I'd still suggest Shadiversity's video on the origin of the knight for a better delve into the topic, as this video seems a little oversimplified.

Funny enough, the word in Spanish for knight is "caballero" which really means horse rider. Even more interesting than that, the word is now used to refer to a gentleman, as in referring to the code of chivalry.

Actually, chivalry was just about loyalty, whatever your king tells you to do, be it killing babies or saving maidens, was considered chivalry
