Some of it is nitpicking (as someone who saw the movie without seeing the show and who saw the show later). Like the Appa stuff is definitely nitpicking as for this time frame it wasn't that bad for an animal character. The contrast with Avatar is stark but Green Lantern was around this time so it wasn't out of place. And the visual casting of Katara and Sokka wasn't bad, they just weren't written or acted at all like the show characters. Zuko, I feel is a bit off visually but with better scripting, I think it could've worked especially since the actor is talented. Uncle Iroh, honestly if he didn't drink tea and mispronounce his name, I don't think anyone would recognize his character at all. Again, I'm sure the actor might be fine but it's a miscast for sure. Uncle Iroh being overweight is part of his innocuous appearance and part of the deception of his character that people underestimate him. The fire lord could definitely be worse - he's passable (could look a bit meaner), just not as good as Mark Hamill's voice. As a standalone movie (ignoring the show), it's not a great movie, not even good but it's watchable in a late-night Netflix kind of way. If you compare it to the show, it really gets dragged down though, and becomes nearly unbearable.

"There is no movie in Ba Sing Se" Fun (or Infuriating) casting facts from this train wreck: - the girl playing Katara was the daughter of some big money executive who essentially bought her the part. - the dude playing Sokka was only cast because he was in the Twilight movies which were HUGE at the time and they thought he was a draw. - the actress playing Princess Yue here got Avatar redemption coz she's the voice of a major character from the sequel show Legend of Korra, and she does a fantastic job - the kid playing Aang actually did have pretty good martial arts skills irl. It was June 28th 2010. The Avatar the Last Airbender movie was coming out in 3 days. All my friends were going to see it on opening night and wanted me to join. sadly I'd only seen 3 episodes of Avatar, but the trailer made it the movie look epic. In 3 days I Binged the entire series of Avatar. This was old school binge. Before streaming. When you had to go to shady sites to find episodes and assume your laptop would be corrupted by spyware. but it was worth it. With hardly any sleep I finished just in time for opening night. The series was a masterpiece and I was so excited for the movie. It had to be good, they had the perfect blueprint. We sat down in a sold out theater with so much anticipation. Then we witnessed the most epic fail of cinematic history. I kept saying it can't possibly be this bad, It will get better. but it never did. It never did! I finally had to accept how bad it was when the Earth benders were being held captive in a rock quarry, and they needed "Katara" to tell them they had earth beneath their feet! Then 10 men did a Stomp the yard dance number to move a single stone. It was so bad. It still haunts me all these years later. I only hope the new live action Netflix series can erase the M.Night dumpster fire from my mind. BTW Dev Patel "Zuko" is actually a great actor. Not in this trash, but in everything else. Watching the tv show before watching this movie was definitely a mistake on your part. I saw the show AFTER having seen the movie. The movie still isn't good but the part that was most infuriating (without knowing the source material) was actually it's absolutely TERRIBLE 3D. The most obvious cash grab in history for the LEAST effort. At the time, people got the Avatar movies confused (due to similar naming). After watching, no one would ever make that mistake again because Avatar (Jake Sully) is 100x better of a movie (even with unobtainium!) and it's 3-D is undefined amounts better. That's the mathematician in me because 1 000 000/0 is undefined. But for those non-mathematicians, it's infinitely better!

So my friends called me a loser and I dragged my boyfriend, now husband, to see The Last Airbender. The theater was empty except for 2 other teen couples. I remember being shocked with how empty the theater was but I didn't care because my favorite show was coming to life! I had a smile on my face from the moment I sat in my seat; the lights went down and I became giddy with anticipation. The movie started and my ear-to-ear smile faded being replaced by a look of pure annoyance. The opening scene with the elements being bent was what made me release the Twilight lover's were right this was going to SUCK! I sat in the theater disappointed and upset by the ending 1/3 of the movie all the couples decided to make fun of the movie, which made the experience better. When Katara says, "They became friends right away" we all burst out laughing and one girl yells "the exposition in this movie is exquisite!" Watching your reaction reminded me of how I felt seeing it for the first time and how funny some parts of the movie were even though they weren't supposed to be! Also, love your videos love from rural Wisconsin!

In2010 as a senior in highschool who had literally grown up with the cartoon on Nickelodeon I went into the theatre sooo excited, happy, and ready for more of what I knew and still know to be one of the best original IP/american written cartoons in existence. This is right up there with some of my favorite anime, which this drew heavy inspiration from. From the very first moment Sokka opens his mouth and there is not an ounce of humor or happiness from him I knew there was a problem. Then when I heard the very first bastardization of names and how they pronounced Aang as "oong" My excitement turned into twisted despair, and I could feel a piece of my soul being ripped from my body. By the end of the movie I needed to be carried out of the threatre I was too weak to move. I couldnt look at a tv or mirror for two weeks because all I would see was the black void of nothingness that this film represents. Reaching out to take yet another part of me. Screw everyone involved with this film. I cannot imagine netflix will do any better. Edit: I returned from the future... Netflix version was not much better. what a damn shame....Better, but not by much...

When The Appleton Oak said “WHY ARE THERE SO MANY WHITE PEOPLE HERE?!?!” I really felt that. It really buggs me to no end the fact that essentially the entirety of both water tribes were whitewashed AND they made the villains be people of darker skin tones (I'm pretty sure there's a name for this phenomenon but I cant quite remember it). Also, regarding the name pronunciations; most of the names in the show are Chinese/Japanese/Indian, Korean (East and South East Asian mainly) etc., inspired. So, since this is an original american cartoon; during the original tv show, they went with the AMERICAN ENGLISH pronunciation and in the movie, they tried to go with the TRADITIONAL CHINESE pronunciation (hence, Iroh sounding like Yeh-Roh and Aang sounding like Ong and so on). Which theoretically speaking is in fact the correct way to pronounce those names, but I think it would've been better if they: EITHER a) Had gone with the traditional Chinese pronunciations since the origin of the tv show OR b) If they had kept the american english pronunciations for the sake of CONSISTENCY Anyways, props to you guys for watching this film (which does not exist in Ba-Sing-Se), it's a tough one

I was 16. I just got my license. My two best friends and I were obsessed with the show and couldn’t have been more hyped about the movie. When I tell you I was excited about a film… I can’t even tell you. I had a dedicated notebook to taking notes about the production, the casting, the premier date… all of it! We show up to the theater. And I knew. I KNEW something was wrong when we showed up and we were 3 of 5 people in the screen room. Then…THEN. the opening scene with the 4 elements and then Katara narrating the beginning and I knew… I knew it was over. Every time a name was said wrong my soul died a little… the acting, the writing… those, like, 8 earthbenders sending one rock floating across the screen at 5 miles an hour *facepalm*, and they did Appa SO👏🏻DIRTY👏🏻My god… I’ve never, NEVER been more disappointed in a movie in my life. @@user-mAfuNqrSe020x The Fire Nation is Japonic whereas Earth Nation is Sinitic, not the other way around. This has been settled for many years in the ATLA community, and frankly it's pretty obvious to anyone with the historical-linguistic knowledge. There's many reasons for why we can tell, but among them: - The thematic reason why FN are taking over the world is because Japan was a brutal colonial power occupying much of Asia from North China down to Taiwan, this is why there's FN colonies in ATLA - For much of recent history China was very poor (the 100 Years of Embarrassment is a cultural-political topic in contemporary China), whereas Japan had long been making advancements and trading with the European powers (Portugal & Netherlands notably) prior to and during Japan's colonial phase, this is mimicked in ALTA by the EN being generally poor as well as very modest in clothing & architecture, whereas FN being highly advanced and futuristic for the time period - Non-colonial FN is entirely white whereas the EN is white to light brown (North to South China) - Chinese coins since antiquity have had square holes in them, same with EN coins as we've seen on numerous occasions (I just ordered 4 Chinese coins from 900-1000 AD North Song dynasty for $8 ea, in fact) -- If you know of Genshin Impact (very popular Chinese video game), Chinese themed characters like Hu Tao and Qiqi are depicted with this square hole coin on their person - Naming schemes are important here, FN names like Zuko and Kuzon and Azula are overwhelmingly obviously Japonic-themed and 95% replicatable in Hiragana/Kanji, ex: ずこ Zu.ko, くぞん Ku.zo.n, あずら A.zu.ra, whereas EN names are overwhelmingly representative of Sinitic-themed names, such as Ba Sing Se, Jin Wei, Pao, Beifong, Wu (Yin & Yang or Xi Jin Ping, anyone?) -- But as you say, it's true that it's not 100%-100%, there are Japonic names used by EN and Sinitic names used by FN, such as Lee (think of how many Chinese Americans you've seen with the surname Lee) - Cutting of hair is a much bigger cultural event in Japan, famously in Japanese media this is used as a trope to show a purported massive character change, the scene where Iroh and Zuko cut their hair off is drawing from this If by "white people," you mean European people, there obviously aren't any in Avatar as the Avatar world is themed around Asia (I don't consider Arabia to be Asian) and indigenous Canadians.
@dan.dandan

@@jeremias-serus well there is other cultures references on the show though, the sun warriors for example who's based off Aztec/Mayan civilizations, from their ancient cities pyramids down to their clothing and face paint. and while you're right, the series isn't really that centered in just one culture/civilization for every nation, its very varied on that aspect. but you put lots of informative stuff in there which is cool ~

@@dan.dandan Of course. I specifically said that, as the person I'm replying to said, that the Fire Nation is not 100% Japanese themed. But it's clearly the main theme. To say that the Fire Nation is anything less than 60-70% Japanese themed would be palpably laughable. I hinted it in my reply because I don't remember for absolute sure, but I'm fairly certain I did once read about either of the authors indeed basing the FN's colonialistic attitude to Imperial Japan's colonialistic attitude. Though secondly, I don't think we'd venture to call ALL firebenders part of the Fire Nation, would we? This including the original firebenders with their Mayan theme.

I watched this movie on its opening night for a midnight showing. Three screens were reserved and I'm fairly certain each theater was packed. Some people dressed as their favorite characters, but everyone was excited. As we all sat in that dark theater, I will never forget the immediate reactions during the Katara's title crawl. "Ovatar? Is that how they're pronouncing it?" a few people whispered nearby. Surely, they would at least get the names right. Right? Right? As the movie progressed, the energy in the room sank. For me, I felt deeply conflicted. On the one hand, I loved the series and this was a worse adaptation (and less accurate) than what the Ember Island Players put on. On the other hand, I loved (and love) watching unintentionally terrible movies. Sadly, this conflict remains, and does for many others. The remedy? Convince others to watch it with them, and thereby experience a small amount of joy from their pain (schadenfreude, as the Germans would say) which is able to provide something positive from this otherwise Hindenburg-disaster of a movie. That's why you had so many comments wanting you to watch this. Half your audience urging you not to did so because they hated it, and the other half of your audience also hated it and knew you would too.

Oh god, I saw the notification for this and was like NOOO GUYS WHAT ARE YOU DOING, DON’T DO THIS TO YOURSELVES!!! In response to your question, Quinn, let me be completely honest when I say that as a HUGE fan of ATLA I was SO pumped to go see this when it came out in theaters. My sister and I walked into that Regal Cinemas on top of the world, excited a whole new group of people who maybe tend to discount animation as a medium would get to be inducted into this epic tale...it didn’t take two minutes for our hearts to drop into our shoes. The moment they said “Ahvatar,” it was over. The moment those white, emotionless drones masquerading as Sokka and Katara showed up on screen, it was over. The moment it took ten men doing a kata to float a single rock across the screen, something in our souls died. We sat stone-faced and seething through that entire film, then walked out in silence afterwards. It legitimately felt like we were the Gaang walking out of the Ember Island Players performance, downcast and shellshocked. To quote Zuko (and I think this was genuinely my comment in the moment too) “That...wasn’t a good play.” “Sohkka.” “Ahng.” “Eeroh.” The complete lack of humor, life, joy. The utter WHITENESS of the Water Tribe, when their culture was indeed inspired by the Inuit, Yupik, Yakut, and other indigenous and Arctic cultures, and Katara and Sokka had the most melanin out of anyone in the main crew in ATLA. HEINOUS. The TERRIBLE TERRIBLE casting and characterization all around. The sprint-through of an entire Book at the speed of (a brittle bare bones) plot, with no character growth or interpersonal relations (the MAIN strength of the OG show, IMO) in sight. The SLOW, PONDEROUS, WEAK CGI bending. Retconning the beautiful worldbuilding of the show...and for what? I feel bad for the handful of genuinely great actors who were roped into this film - in particular, I ADORE Dev Patel (Zuko) (seriously, check him out in The Green Knight, Slumdog Millionaire, David Copperfield, he’s brilliant and hilarious) - because sometimes the script and directing is just so bad there’s literally nothing you can do to give a good performance. But most of these chumps they hired? Nothing behind those eyes. No believable emotion. No comprehension of their characters. Terrible child actors heading the cast - Aang, at LEAST, needed to be good. They just picked the first kid trained in martial arts they could find. Awful. Do better, M. Night. He wanted the spectacle, and forgot the soul. Just. Tone-deaf, money-grubbing bullshit on the part of Shyamalan. He didn’t understand the show, he didn’t get why it was good, he just saw something popular he could rope a whole generation into buying tickets for and went with it. My sister and I were DEVASTATED. And the trauma returns every time I see someone else experience this shitshow for the first time - no matter how much of a warning they get, no one is EVER prepared for just how BAD it is. Also, I guess you guys aren’t aware - there IS another live action adaptation in the works. Currently. It’s been cast (with the correct nationalities at least, thank fuck) and I believe they’ve started filming too. NATURALLY, when I first heard about it I was like “oh no, not again.” Originally Bryan and Mike (the creators of the show) were on the production/writing team, which gave me a little hope for it, but they ended up dropping out during pre-production because of “creative differences” so...yeah. Another heart-in-the-shoes moment. I’m not holding out much hope for it. But I DO believe it will be at least marginally better than this once it/if it ever airs! Can’t imagine anything being worse than this pile of flaming crap. It hurt to see you guys suffer through this one. I screamed at the screen along with you, believe me. 💚💚💚

I cna accept the name pronounciation cuz the animated show did not pronounce those names how it really should be... of course this world is not really the asian countries either, so the show's way of having the names pronoucned would be the right one.

@@kinagrill And the Avatar world itself doesn't have the Latin alphabet. The official spellings for everyone's names can be seen as a translation from their writing system into ours, so if anything, it'd make sense to change the spellings but not the pronunciations.

@@AstraIVagabond Indeed. But I can still accept some pronounciation change cuz the native way for a lot of those natives would be pronounced differently for real-world comparison. But the fact the movie is shit, the effects are woefully underwhelming and the fact that they rush a whole season into a single movie.... that's just BAD.

I think we can still stay cautiously hopeful for the Netflix show to be honest. It seems like Bryan and Mike left because Netflix is changing up the story in some ways, but truthfully it seems like they have people who really knew and loved the original show and could have some genuinely interesting story tweaks. No one should expect it to be the greatest show of all time or anything, but I think with learning from the mistakes of ATLA the movie and just shoveling a SHIT ton of money into this show that Netflix will give us something solid.
