There is no doubt that Ebenezer Scrooge was a selfish, uncaring miser. But he wasn’t always like that… something turned him. Dickens gives us clues as to what this might have been when the Spirit of Christmas past shows him his school, the damp decaying institution in which he was left over the Christmas holidays with only a few books and his youthful imagination for company. The very sight of it makes him sob. This mirrors Dickens’ own childhood when, as a 12 year old boy, his father was thrown into debtors’ jail and he had to leave school, live in a hovel and work for a pittance in a filthy rat-infested shoe-blacking factory.
In this documentary we explore the mind of Ebenezer Scrooge, and consider what might have afflicted him when Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol in 1843.
