Such a sensible message. My financial advisor says if you’re not saving it’s unlikely that you’ll start later. My mom had low wage jobs and no medical but kept her lifestyle low. She had enough working credits to get a little SS, a small Spain pension & small ex-spouse pension. House paid off, cheap car and had $50,000 in the bank. Once she hit Medicare she got insurance plus the extra insurance.

Oooooh I'm so looklng forward to your Portugal vlogs again. I'm fantasising about going this autumn but I'm not sure if that will end up being a realiity. Depends on gigs and Izzy... she can't get time off in term time for holidays now, so our el cheapo last minute deals we usually do are much harder to come by. We managed to have 5 days in Lloret de Mar, Spain for about £330 a head in the Easter holiday which included flights, transfers, accomodation and food and drink on an all inclusive basis. So pretty good for during school holidays. It scratched the travel/holiday itch somehwhat but has mainly whetted my appetite for more.

Just booked a week in Porto. It’s our first time there, but we visited Lisbon 3 years ago and loved it, so hoping for the same. Already enjoyed a week in Venice this year. It’s time to get traveling again I think. Both holidays were booked through EasyJet by the way, here in the U.K. and their package deals of flight and hotel seem real bargains, especially if you’re lucky enough to be retired and so can travel any days you feel like. We often go during the week and that’s much cheaper than weekend to weekend. Looking forward to more adventures this year. Take care guys. Really enjoying your channel.

Hi guys. Great video as always. Our travel budget is around the Canadian average you mentioned. Pre Covid (😡😡) we would typically spend a month in Hawaii (splitting the cost of a condo with my wife’s sister) and another month in the summer doing a long road trip in the US. In April of 2020 we had booked a beautiful cruise through the Panama Canal. Obviously we had to cancel because of the pandemic. Princess gave us a full refund ($10,000) and a voucher for the same amount for a future cruise. We have rebooked a Mexican cruise for late December of this year, which is going to cost us nothing. Fingers crossed on that one. We are about your age and want to travel while we’re able. Losing two years of travelling hasn’t been easy, but we tried to make the best of it. Cheers, looking forward to your next video.

Hello Tina and Norm, I'm a long time viewer of your KZitem channel and enjoy every episode! Thank you. We are in Ontario too. Townhouse in Mississauga and an off-the-grid cabin between Bancroft and Haliburton. My husband, Gary, retired this month. He's 62. I'm 57 and semi-retiremed. Gary planned to retire at 61, but our daughter, Emily, age 27, died last year due to heart transplant complications. We postponed Gary's retirement one year and thought it best not make any big decisions during our first year of grieving. We have a 22 year old son who lives with us and probably will for years as he has high functioning autism and selective mutism. The 3 of us, and Emily's dog Rocco, moved to the cabin for the summer to raise chickens and I will be working part-time at the art gallery in Haliburton until late August. We will sell the chickens and take a month long road trip in September to Florida to visit family, stay at Universal Studios, camp at Disney's Fort Wilderness, and snorkel in the Keys. I also work remotely as a travel agent and art teacher. Here's the thing -- Gary is panicked about stocks and mutual funds in decline. How are you dealing with current high inflation and investments tanking? Thanks so much! Sandra

As an overall pattern Sandra stocks go up and down , we feel when they go down we buy on pullbacks and our CIBC shares just did a stock split so we have double the stocks now . Hi Norm & Tina , thanks for sharing your Holiday budget strategy, again a very interesting video - I would be cautious to simply multiply 25K by 10 as current situation shows that everything is more and more expensive so I would add probably + 3 to 5% each year to be safe ; -) nevertheless you did not spend your whole budget during the last 2 years so you should find easily some spare money to spend haha. I just went on my first trip in 2 years --- from Alberta to Ontario! I did all the Covid things --- masked, hand sanitizer, etc. First segment of the trip was to Thunder Bay to visit my mother. I flew into Toronto for an overnight and that evening, got notification that my mother's residence had a Covid outbreak and was on lockdown. Cancel that week of the trip. Luckily I could stay with family in Toronto. Next up ... few days in Ottawa to visit a friend. Got back from there, started feeling unwell next day -- YUP, I had caught Covid. So, was in seclusion for 10 days (had to miss seeing my grandchildren, extend my stay till I tested negative, etc., etc.). Quite the adventure!!! I'm only grateful that it happened at "home" where I have family. I can't imagine that happening overseas and the added cost to the trip. Love your vlogs. So informative!

Thank you both for your weekly podcast on interesting subjects. For those not interested in cruises. Possible to spend 3 winter months in Portugal on a very reasonable budget. As has been described many times by Norm and Tina’s own travelling. I -solo seventy-ish years old- spend 2 to 3 months in Portugal in winter. Their off season. Flight return 750 canadian dollars. reserved in early Fall. Lodging either rental apartment or private room in a hostel is not more than 900$ to 1k canadian per month in winter. Food is not much more expensive than what is budgeted at home including a few restaurants and take out. So I dont include food in my budget. So many take outs there. Pizzeria. Bistros. like at home. Not using the car saves on gaz normally spent at home. Bus and trains discounts for seniors in Portugal. Restaurants offer daily specials. Really: travel budget can be modest and very affordable. Thanks Tina and Norm. And Happy travelling to all🌻

Since my wife finally retired on April this year, we sold our Chicagoland home and moved down to the St. Augustine area (Northern Florida) - but we are just renting a house. This month I was given the permanent residency in Panama so we are planning to spend Florida's hot and humid months (i.e. hurricane season) there and start the process of residency for Emma as well. (It will allow us to embrace the culture and the language.) Note that from Orlando Intl Airport to Panama City is only a 3.5 hour flight and from there to Guayaquil, Ecuador about 2 hours. As a result, we decided to use Panama (also renting there) as a springboard to exploring Ecuador, Peru, Chile and Paraguay but we will know more if the actual costs will match the $11,000 per year budget after the proverbial 'dust settles'. Both wifey and I truly enjoy your videos... :D

Thank you for the calm discussion about budgeting versus real expenditures on travel. We become smarter at the travel hobby, and the value increases. I like the way you explained that food costs are not added to the budget, as we would be eating at home as well. I imagine the same is true for petrol. Thank you for this point. I thought your alert systems for deals was pretty cool. Thank you for sharing this. I like to take my line item cost for airfare and divide it by my projected number of days away from home. I add this to my accommodation costs and ground transportation costs. If the daily average is above $100 USD, I don’t bite. Either I consider lengthening my stay, or I search for a different flight. If the line items of flight and ground transportation are bargained for, everything else is a wash (balances out). I always learn from your presentation, and I enjoy your passion for life and for living. Lastly, $25,000 plus any costs to keep your present home humming while you travel (maximum $500 USD per month) is $31,000 per year or $2,384 per month (I use the accurate 13 months [365 days divided by 28 days - i.e., 4 complete weeks]. Divided by two people is $1,197 per person per month [$2,384 divided by 2 people - i.e., Tina and Norm]. All these details to make the simple point from your presentation and for myself and for anyone who reads this: It isn’t any more expensive to travel than it is to pay North American prices for what could be had for at much lower prices in interesting and warm cities in other countries. Thank you for helping me to further crystallize this fact about the true cost of traveling.

Hi Dean, Great to hear from you again what a great comment, we are learning from you as well. The flight and accommodation at $100 per day is a great target. We believe we are substantially below that, we are going to sit down and run some numbers from previous trips to get an accurate figure! We really like maintaining a home base because eventually travel will be over for us but we will still have a nice affordable place to live. Fantastic comment Dean thanks so much for sharing these ideas.

My wife and I like to travel at least twice a year, we try to keep it simple -cruises or tour vacations, and a few days on a farm - so 8,000 US dollars annually. You guys take extensive vacations and travel more than us. At times, last minute travel plans can generate great cost savings i.e cruises .Best always

Good morning from Australia. Like you, we’ve been home too long and are excitedly preparing for our first international trip in three years, leaving on 4 June. We’re travelling to the UK to visit family & friends, taking a cruise in Norway and a roadtrip in France. I’m embarrassed to say that we’re probably spending all the travel money we’ve saved during the pandemic. We generally budget around $30K AUD = approx $28K CAD. Living where we do, airfares take up a deal of our budget. We are like you and once we get to our destination, we are fairly budget minded.

Thanks for this very interesting video. And always thank you for reminding me to do what we can while we can (and while we still want to!). That is important because sometimes, as we age, we cannot cope with all the airport hassles etc. On a completely separate note, we were attending a family game night, watching the Leafs play. Nephew and his girlfriend were telling us about their planned upcoming trip to Portugal. So I directed them to your site. They are most interested. So much good info. Cheers.

Some tips on how you find these bargain vacations would be very welcome. Also perhaps sometime you could talk about solo travellers and how they cope. Are there ways in which solo vacationers can be matched up with each other? I have a bucket list of places I’d like to see before it’s too late but it all seems rather lonely and daunting. As the great comedian W.C. Fields once said “I’d like to see Paris before I die. Philadelphia would do”.

It is hard for us to talk about single travel , as we are a couple but companies like Azores getaways do solo trips and some cruise ships 🚢 will give you the option to share with another solo . Cheers 🌺🚢🙂🍷

Portugal awaits. I'm with you on the cruise feeling. Just seems less safe than a flight, being with the same people for shorter period on the plane. My only long haul on the ocean waves was in 1967 between Auckland New Zealand to Rotterdam via the Suez canal ( just prior to its closure during the war there). I love road trips ( as you may have read) and short flights are OK - though the proces due to the recovery after the pandemic and now the oil shortage due to the devastatingly sad and diabolic situation in the Ukraine. Now I have written that traveling plans seem so trivial. Enfin, life does go on and we are allowed to embrace it. Enjoy the week ( and the trailer?) Have fun. ✈️ 🍷 🤩 💖 🇳🇿 🙋♀️ 🇳🇱

Cruises are expensive. This one very much depends on your type of travel style. We like cheaper locations, and longer stays. We like staying among locals vs resorts. All of these things really add to or subtract from expensive travel. Those discount deals are fantastic when you can find them. I remember when they were everywhere but here in the states, they get hard to find. You two have been very fortunate with your retirement setup.

Another enjoyable video, so thanks to you both! How many days out of the country do you get (or do you hope to get) for that $25,000? Or do you just choose the $25,000 and whatever you get out of the country, is what you get. Another way for me to plan for my retirement is to say " I want to be out of Canada Nov 1 to April 30 each year" and figure out what that costs. Or pick an amount of cash and spend til it is done. Thank you again! PS off to Terceira next week thanks to your videos and encouragement to find great deals :-)

$25,000 PER YEAR- OMG!! We found a fairly inexpensive way to vacation. We rent a rustic cabin on Lake Michigan in a State Park about 5 hours from our home for four days. Including our gas and the cabin rental we only spend $500.00 for our trip. We like to hike, kayak, bird watch, beach walk, photograph cook on a camp stove or an open fire and have beach fires at night. We are simple people and like a simple outdoor vacations. $250,000 was our ENTIRE retirement savings we have to live on!!

I think maybe great advice for N America residents, and generally good to make the most of opportunities, though probably much easier for Europeans who can travel to many continental countries much less expensively, especially last minute travel (which can be spontaneous and very interesting). Quality and destination can still be first class … arrived in Malta for a week at top hotel and extended to two weeks at a modest cost and low cost change to budget airline return date. It would have been just as easy to get the ferry to Italy for an extra week or two. For Europeans I think flexibility and imagination are key to making the best of travel and holidays.

Travel budget? Zero and it's looking like a week away camping for me and a couple of nights a few hours away for both of us might be about it this year. We've never been interested in travel but we have been making our home more pleasant and the fact that we live in a top tourist area as well is nice. There are some places I wouldn't mind seeing but the effort and cost involved mean we can't be bothered. It's nice that every day is a holiday if you live in the right place.

Very interesting to hear so many differing opinions on how to travel. My moto has always been travel cheap and stay cheap. Spend money on the things I enjoy, like local food and wine, tickets to the Opera and music, theatre. Read up on history in advance gives better understanding/ enjoyment of where you are. Do the energetic travel first, the cruising comes later. Great enjoyment to be had meeting like minded people, I always learn a lot by listening to others.

Actually $25,000 per year does not seem much to me. I retired this January at the age of 70, and want to travel a lot while I am still healthy enough to travel. But my tastes run to the exotic - I have booked a lot of cruises (mainly expedition cruises to places like Antarctica, Greenland, and Indonesia) for the next two years. Just returned on Sunday from my first cruise, a 11 day Silversea Classic cruise from Fort Lauderdale to Halifax and working on my travel budget right now. My expenses for this trip was $12,686 USD plus $1474.15 CAD (Total being almost $18,000 CAD for this one trip alone) I have 4 more cruises planned this year, which are all Expedition cruises, so they are a lot more expensive. So that is a big chunk of money I need to plan for. Being a solo traveller with exotic tastes is very expensive.
