The thing is. It’s an Illumination film. Everyone says it’s shocking for an Illumination film to earn so much money. The thing is, it’s Illumination. They make more money than Disney off of mid or sometimes terrible movies. Some of these movies are adaptations like the Grinch and The Lorax. They’re not that good and yet earned a ton of money. Why, because they’re adaptations off of books that a lot of people (including kids) know. They don’t care about the story. They only care about seeing their favourite characters on tv. And when a video game character that pretty much everyone knows about gets a movie made by a this company. You know darn well it’s gonna make billions.

Super Mario did not make a billion in profits. Studios only get 50% of the total box office, so that's about 700M. Then you still have to subtract the production & advertising budget so that's another 200M. The total winnings of Super Mario are about 500M (which is still a lot)

But for each movie there is a marketing budget as well what is even more impossible to found. Some say it is half of the production budget, for good measure. Meanwhile the revenue what Box office mojo list is income from ticket sales in theaters. This is not the money what a studio gets as income. There are many different contract but you can safely assume that that the cinema keeps at least 40% of the ticket sales. So based on all this your profit calculation probably off by an order. And sadly more movie in the red you think.

Just wanna put this out there, I don’t like it when people say “The Super Mario Bros Movie was supposed to feel like a video game. Mario games aren’t all about stories. They’re about having fun.” Yeah, Mario GAMES aren’t all about the story. But games and movies are two completely different things. The whole reason video game adaptations are a thing is to focus on game’s story. To show more of the characters. To see stuff you wouldn’t normally see in the game. In games. You don’t have much time for stories. Mostly gameplay. This just makes the movie feel like a walk through you would find on KZitem. Also, putting a hand full of references does not make this movie feel like a game. Also also, Mario games DO have a story. Mostly the RPG’s.

About Ninja Turtles. I wonder how many salty ROTTMNT fans boycotted it. That's been a bit of a thing this year. I think ROTTMNT was in the top 100 fandoms on Tumblr. Because they were all very furious about how they ended the second season of the animated series, followed by a two year time gap to the other ROTTMNT movie. Actually, wasn't that released this year? Idk, anyway. Still want ROTTMNT back nickelodean. Thanks. OMG have you been on AO3. I think ROTT is still all the talk, even with that movie. Fic after fic after fic my lord that fandom is still thriving corperate be damned. I didn't realise how badly it did. What a sad day. May have to watch it just to comfort my poor babies. They deserved better sobsob

As other already mentioned, differences are not a good metric for a movie success. Ratios are much more relevant.

I feel like with all these movies coming to streaming anyways people would just rather wait then go out and spend even more money to see it. We are already paying the company for the streaming service why give them more money when they’ll just give us the movie a couple weeks after it comes out in theaters.

The reason for the Indiana Jones discrepency is because you forgot to factor in advertising and the cut the theatres take

the budget is also much to low, it was made in the UK so the real budget will be public next tax season and the published costs from the last years are also above their reported budget.
