As a bartender it was tough to watch... Soak a sugar cube with 3-6 dashes of bitters, then muddle. From there add your whiskey and a big ice cube. Dilution is key with an old fashioned, you're going to want to stir for atleast 30 seconds, closer to a minute. Next strain ingredients over a fresh ice cube, add in a luxardo cherry, express the orange peel around the rim of the glass and toss in. That's it! Love the content guys but next time reach out to a bartender and have them on as a guests to make your drinks.

Been making some really good old fashions recently with Old Granddad BIB and Wild Turkey 101. My recipe has been 2 oz bourbon, 10g demerara syrup, ~6 dashes Angoustura bitters, and one big twist of orange zest stirred and served over ice. The key is finding an orange with a really crisp peel so when you twist it you can see a mist of oils spraying over your cocktail. The old fashion treatment really highlights the unique nature of both bourbons and really does taste like christmas.

Knob 12 has made the best old fashion for me hands down. Very little sugar in the raw muddled first with bitters, then ice, then Knob and mix and mix with a stirer.. squeeze orange peel for oils onto top and then drop in, garnish with one or two luxardo cherries.

Hilarious episode. But as someone who enjoys a good Old Fashioned in the heat of Texas summer, there is one thing you could do to drastically improve your drink. Instead of just plopping a chunk of peel into the glass, try peeling just the zest portion of the skin from the orange and then pinch it over the drink. You'll see the orange oil actually spray from the zest, this is known as expressing the orange oil. I usually then rub the zest around the inside rim of the glass so you get a little of that oil when you sip. You also won't end up with the bitterness of the orange pith in the drink. Otherwise, thanks for the fun content as always. Always fun to see you guys trying new things....except Ardbeg in an Old Fashioned.

@@BourbonJunkies Some people do like to let their drink sit a while or perhaps stir it up to dilute. I feel like that's a preference though, I like to enjoy it as the ice melts naturally. You get that stronger whisky taste at the start and then get to experience the flavor as it evolves with the ice melting. Though if I'm honest, my first one is usually gone before the ice melts. :P

Also, so I tried making and old fashioned with ECBP A120, and it got even more cloudy than the last one. I think it has to do with the combo of being barrel proof and also non-chilled filtered. Basically when you don't chill filter it, some oily compounds stay in the drink, and in high concentrations in a barrel proof whiskey. When you put it over ice and chill it, those compounds solidify. It messes with the flavor of the drink. I suspect cocktails will tend to be better if you use a 100+ proof whiskey that IS chill filtered. Maybe try that in future as well.

Then I realized you were using simple syrup and not sweet vermouth and was so confused about how you were making an old fashioned that I had to google it to make sure I did indeed know what an old fashioned is. Add 2 Domino Dots small sugar cubes + 5 dashes Angostura aromatic bitters to a rocks glass and muddle into a paste. Add splash of club soda and muddle a little more. Add large ice cube to glass and pour 2 oz UNPEATED whiskey (or anejo tequila/mezcal/dark rum/brandy/etc) over the ice.
