Blake is amazing riding with no rear tire on that trail, but we've seen him do that before! Carbon can obviously be stiffer and lighter, but the major drawback to carbon fiber structures is that you really cannot see or observe the micro failures of delamination that are taking place before visual (and massive) structural failure. Ollie knows that to do this properly you need non-destrucutive testing to e done after the first tests, and then again after to last one to see the (probable) gradual degradation and likely failure modes rom the last run without tires. Great fun though!

I ran over my front wheel (which I had left sitting next to my truck). I had two broken spokes and assumed I was gonna be out a grand. I took the wheel to my LBS, and they replaced the spokes, trued the wheel, and it’s as good as new apart from a cosmetic scratch on the side, well hidden with a sharpie marker. An alloy wheel would have been toast. Amazing!

An interesting torture test, but what would really make it matter is how it does under more normal trials over a long time. Would de-lamination occur after a few years or more of rugged trails, potholes and etc? Most people expect their wheels to last many years....

To reference Colin Chapman of Lotus fame, clearly these wheels are overbuilt if they don't fail immediately after reaching the finish line. Most modern road wheels are plenty strong enough, I'm not sure any roadie would need to be worried about that. As for compliance... you get that from your tyres. Spokes under tension do not offer any measurable vertical compliance.

It's great to see Blake here on GCN doing such things 😀. However, I think you could destroy them quicker and more severally on a section of rough pavé. We've seen wheels being destroyed in the forest of Arenberg when a tire blew off in this year's Paris-Roubaix and from personal experience I can say arguably one of the best phone holders for mountain bikes failed on me once whilst riding a road bike on cobblestone descend.

I broke the front wheel of my XC MTB with far less abuse than that... One tree stump hiding in the grass was all it took to splay the the brake surfaces out by several mm on my aluminium rim MTB with 2,1" tyres...
