Lucy, Thanks for another good video! Love the details and your honesty! [Experiences rule!] But fyi, some folks (especial younger crew from western countries) might not know this word "saving"? Ha ha 😀so maybe you should've explained what it means to "save"😀On aside, I think it ironic that this Thursday, 4th of July is Election Day in the UK, and Independence Day here in USA! (Sarcasm Alert: You're welcome...'cuz if it wasn't for our "founding fathers" here declaring independence from you all Brits, you might not have a Parliament today, to vote for 😀) Seriously though, it's cool that the two countries that fought a horrific war 248 years ago, turned-out to-be the best-of-friends with a "special relationship" that is closer than any other 2 countries in the world (sorry to our friends in Canada, we love 'ya, but we don't really think of you all as "another country", rather just like "another big state, somewhere up north"...ha ha, just kidding, we do love our Canadian neighbors!). SO, Lucy please go and VOTE! And, Fair Winds to ya'!

Not sure how you can determine what you are going to save without knowing how much you will paid and an awful lot of jobs pay less than UK minimum wage so a $1.50 for a drink may will be relatively expensive

Make the most comes at the cost of being a undesirable... Ive been on a few cruises and been to amazing spots like Hawaii, Alaska, NYC and Washington DC .... we own a home and several cars... I am a slave wage worker.... but I was able to build wealth.... I feel maybe the cruise worker life isn't worth it. Actually I think its a valid point to bring up, I have bought three homes and given one away to family and am on the cusp of buying a lake house... I am not rich, I make garbage money, I am away from my family alot..... but we had land legs and not sea legs... a-lot of your experiences resonate with what I have had to go thru as well ... no shade in your direction because your stories are fascinating... I just don't feel they are sound monetary advice.

11:20 What if you bring your own StarLink connection? Can you think of any reason this wouldn’t work out in practice?
@captainjohn49
3 ай бұрын
The short answer is, no. Bringing on-board your own Starlink system is a no-go! If you want the straight scoop in "how-to" of on-board internet/wi-fi, download Lucy's career guides (the "Let's Get Techy" guide handles this). -- First off, it is against the rules/regs on most (all?) cruise ships to bring a Starlink system on-board. -- Second, it of course would only work if you brought the whole system up on deck (a top deck), where you had a clear view to the sky. (you see where some newer ships / upgraded ships have their Starlink systems installed....and where the older/non-upgraded ships have their big satcom domes installed....this is where you'd need to put your Starlink system) -- Third, how would you supply it with power/electricity? The outdoor unit/dish gets its power from the main unit inside, but since you have no way to "wire"/"connect" this through the ship, you'd need to have the whole system (inside unit, too) up on the top deck with you....and how would you supply it with electrical power? (remember this isn't something that you can power for more than a few minutes from a battery system, and of course that would be another heavy item to lug up to a top deck....and of course another prohibited item) -- Fourth, while Starlink is a good system its coverage isn't complete yet (of course Iridium is worldwide and offers complete coverage, at much lower data rates, but there are other reasons that having any personal satcom system on-board is a rather poor idea)...so, there would be outages along your way. -- Fifth, Starlink isn't cheap! The larger, high-performance Starlink system needed to work offshore, sells for $2500... -- Sixth, even if someone gave the $2500 system to you, the monthly costs aren't cheap....and, please understand that while you can use Starlink away from your home address (with prior notice/authorization), they charge you a lot more money for this "roaming"....I think it's now been lowered to $250/month for lower data rate offshore personal roaming (and no credit given for times you have no service) {and, if you're wondering what Starlink charges for their actual "maritime" plan, they just lowered their prices....so now, for small boats / single accounts it's $1000/month....and for larger vessels, with multiple users, it's $5000/month [per system]....and no, those are not typos...} There are other reasons that bringing your own Starlink on-board isn't a workable solution.... But just to play devil's advocate for a minute (I make my living in commercial satcom and have used maritime satcom for decades, including Iridium)....if you were a higher-ranking officer with an outside cabin with a decent-sized window (bigger than a port-hole), you may be able to rig an Iridium antenna to this window and possibly achieve some connectivity with Iridium Certus (not Starlink) with much lower data rates (typically only 100 - 200 kb/s, similar to the old 2G / GSM data rate)...oh, and the darn Certus terminal would cost you a few thousand dollars....of course, if you were a high-ranking officer, you'd get free (or cheap) wi-fi / internet anyway... Think of the population density of the ocean (zero) versus large cities....and then think of the high-tech infrastructure installed on the ocean (none, except for on-board a ship) versus that installed in large cities... And, you may start to see why internet costs what it does at sea, versus on-shore...it is NOT a technology issue, it IS a cost issue (or rather a "cost-per-user-per-square-mile" issue). There is a LOT more to all of this, but I think this should answer the basic question as to why (if you choose to stay "connected" to the world when at sea) you'll spend money on internet / wi-fi....but, of course, nobody forces you to stay "connected", you could simply put your phone and/or computer in your luggage and leave them there 'til you leave the ship, and never spend a dime on internet....your choice. :) P.S. In case you're a "tech" guy like me, there ARE easy/cheap (about $25) solutions to gain access to free wi-fi when in port, while you're still on-board the ship...but, that's a whole 'nother discussion.

@@captainjohn49 First, thank you so much for such a thorough and technical reply. Secondly, I agree about how being disconnected can be a blessing. Third, as someone with a technical background, do you have any insight on the feasibility of doing HF amateur radio (WinLink / VARA / Sailmail) during off hours? Would this be something that requires permission/clearance from the captain to assure no interference with official ship communications?

@@seanwieland9763 You're welcome. Not sure what you're trying to find, though...as "internet access" IS available on-board, it is just at significant cost versus what it costs onshore...(always has been and most likely always will be) FYI, not that many years ago, analog voice phone calls from ships at sea cost $10 - $15 per minute! (with a 3-minute minimum)....and telex was charged by the character/letter (I don't remember the exact price, but a single page of simple text cost > $10 - $15) Think about spending 1 - 2 days wages, on one short phone call? (unless you were the captain, when you got to port everyone lined-up in front of public phones, with an int'l calling card in hand, waiting to call home) And, even today right now, for small handheld satellite-phones (or very low-speed data/SMS) you pay $1/minute (to $1.50/min), with post-paid/billed-by-minute accounts...I know, I have one! This is why most mariners / seafarers from even 20 - 25 years ago, used snail-mail and sometimes int'l calling cards, when in port...many of the new breed should look back and be thankful for what communications is now de rigueur, even if it costs more than they think it should. BTW, the answer is NO, you're NOT going-to bring your HF ham gear on-board! NOT going to happen. (and fyi, whether onshore or at sea, please grasp that none of these low-speed data modes/services allow any internet access...yes P4 via Sailmail is "fast", but it's still only 1/10 the speed of 30-yr-old "dial-up" modems....and less than 1/100 the speed of 2G/GSM data speeds) Although, a few bridge officers (who are hams) on a couple merchant/container ships occasionally run their GMDSS HF systems on the ham bands (I have personally worked a few of them on-the-air), in 45 years I've never heard a cruise ship on the ham bands. I hope this clears things up? Internet costs at sea...and that's a fact! Fair winds.
