Man, I don't even cycle MTB but this is so interesting, because you really ride these bikes and give so much info about it. Something you could never read in an print magazine / online magazine review. Thanks for your videos, they are awesome. And I really like the fact that you look for bikes, that WORK and not are there for impressing other people. Often the most expensive bikes have the worst riders on it, who dont even know how to get the maximum use of their bikes. Further more do I like your tip with the sprockets in this vid especially. Cadence is so important to have fresh legs after a climb. Thanks for your content!

I just bought a bike with the same Deore groupset and “3 finger” brakes . And I’ve switched the position and put the brakes in the “inside “ of the bar so the long levers are now in some “1 or 2 fingers” position and even if it doesn’t look as clean as the stock setup. It works fine.

Great review!! I have an aluminum bike with 2x10 slx, ITM components and a rockshox xc32 air, on the budget side like yours. I've only ridden top bikes in test events, but I feel like super expensive bikes will do more for my ego than for my performance. It obviously has benefits, but things can get way too expensive in my country(Brazil), so not worth it.

This was one of your best videos. It really inspired me to start XC racing. I have a Scott Scale 960 I converted to 1X 11-46t, I'm considering putting the 2x11 from my Scott Genius on there.
@cannondany
6 жыл бұрын
Both Scale and Genius are great bike. And YES - try some races, just for fun! If you converted your hardtail to 1x, I would suggest, that you first take it to the race and find out, whether you feel the need of the double chainset. Most of the riders use 1x. I strongly feel, it is not the best setup for the performance, but just for fun it can be a good choice.
@MkosAceOnline
6 жыл бұрын
I think using 1x setup depends how strong rider you are. Personaly I am going to stick with my 26-36 X 11 - 46 setup for XC races, just thinking about changing the 36 ring for 39 or 40 for more speed as I found out I am running out of the gears quite often (not in the hills though).

""You don't need expensive bikes." That's a very practical advice, indeed! I have, at the moment, a Giant Talon 2 (2017)--an entry-level hardtail. It's practically my workhorse as it is very utilitarian. I'm looking forward to own maybe a newer Giant Talon or a Marin Team Marin, and a Marin San Quentin! I'm already OK with these not so expensive bikes. I can't sacrifice with those cheap bikes either.

Hi Dani, I really like that you are using affordable bikes and components instead of high end expensive stuff. Recently I've updated an old bike to Deore 1x10 with an oval chainring. I completely understand your problem with the gearing of the 11-42 10 speed cassette. My personal experience is, that this specific cassette does only make sense for a 1x10 setup. If I'd go with a 2x10 setup and go through the hassle of using a front derailleur then I'd expect two advantages: A bigger gearing range and lower gear steps. The new Deore doesn't deliver because of the new crankset (34-24, 36-26) doesn't fit the cassette! The old Deore drivetrain was much more suitable: 11-36 cassette plus 36-22 or 38-24 crankset gives a much better gearing range and nicer steps. The new crankset was taken from 2x11 11-40 or 11-42 drivetrain and only works there! You can compare the old/new Deore 2x10 setups easily: www.ritzelrechner.de/?GR=DERS&KB=24,34&RZ=11,13,15,18,21,24,28,32,37,42&UF=2309&TF=90&SL=2.6&UN=KMH&GR2=DERS&KB2=22,36&RZ2=11,13,15,17,19,21,24,28,32,36&UF2=2309 The old one doesn't have the huge 20% step jumping from 15t to 18t. Using the old 10 speed 11-36 cassette with a 34-24 chainring setup gives you the nice smooth gearing but you could miss the lowest gear sometimes. Btw. I think the low gears 32-37-42 don't fit the 2x 29" drivetrain because the lowest gear is too low. In my opinion the optimal gearing range for a 29" 2x drivetrain is delivered by the 11-40 xt/xtr cassette in combination with 34-24 chainrings: www.ritzelrechner.de/?GR=DERS&KB=24,34&RZ=11,13,15,18,21,24,28,32,37,42&UF=2309&TF=90&SL=2.6&UN=KMH&GR2=DERS&KB2=24,34&RZ2=11,13,15,17,19,21,24,27,31,35,40&UF2=2309 This is smooth and has nice steps. Sorry for the long text. ;-) The cheapest modification of your Setup would be to take an old 11-36 cassette and exchange the 24t chainring with a 22t, but I don't know if your front derailleur can handle the 22t ring. Best regards, Andi

try to mount the brake-levers way more inside of the handlebar and use the length of the lever to your benefit. This brakes are cheap, but offer extremly good modulation and more power then you ever need outside of an enduro or downhill-race.

I just visited the cube cup today (hosted by cube bikes if that isnt obvious) and it was so fucking cliche, you wouldnt believe it. Every single XC/road rider stereotype seems to be absoloutely true. A bunch of up tight, overcompetetive snobs. just look at DH, enduro or slopestyle. The riders hang out together and even do trackwalks together to figure out the best lines. I didnt see any friendly conversations between competing teams today. i really love your approach to racing. i scratched my head a lot today, seeing 10 to 12 year olds in lycra and the most high end bikes you can imagine. XX1 Eagle, RS1, XTR, Brain suspension and all of that on the most high end frames of this season. I felt kinda cheap with my 3 grand bike, but at least i can descend.

burkaanc if your reach is short and you need a longer stem probably the frame is small for you, you need a frame that when you put a bar 750mm wide minimun your max stem size should be 60mm thats the best bar/stem combo,10 years ago whe use to buy smaller frames and put a longer stem to fine tune, that don't work very good anymore.
