It’s actually theorized that Heimdall’s ‘mothers’ were a fancy metaphor for the nine waves (I notice nine is an often-used number in Norse myth). It makes sense- there’s a lot about Heimdall that has elements tied to water; it makes sense considering his passive-aggressive relations with Loki (who more or less represents Asgard’s fire) who later became his nemesis during Ragnarök (though that’s not the first time the two fought; they’ve fought two other times before Ragnarök, all involving Freyja’s necklace.)
@thatoneguy8825
2 жыл бұрын
That theory is popular, however there's one little issue with that theory: the names are different. The names of Heimdall's mothers (Atla, Erygjafa etc) aren't the same as the Ægir and Rán's nine children, the women of the waves. It's a good theory, but this does throw a spanner in the works.

I'm going with the mothers merging theory. You sea Heimdal's mothers are all sea goddesses and are the daughters of the god and goddess of the sea(you sea the pun). Because of this they would most likely have some water like abilities, like turning into water and merging with other bodies of water. My theory is that they merge into one water being and got impregnated by Odin. However their form only broke after the baby was born most likely for long periods of time the merging would require lots of stamina and also because that same energy goes to the baby. That is why Heimdal in my theory got 9 mothers.

But it's also important to remember that the number 9 is very important in Norse mythology. 9 realms. Odin sacrifices himself for 9 days and nine nights. The ring draupnir creates eight other rings just like it (making it nine) every ninth night. Thor staggers 9 steps before he dies by Jormungandr's poison. A lot of old rituals included the number 9. Like one where every nine years they feast for 9 nights. Even the valknut is three interlocking triangles,each with 3 points (3x3 is nine points). I don't think it was on accident.

My idea is way more morbid. 7 of them gave birth to stillborn babies who each had one healthy body part. The 8th one gave birth to one with a weak body, so they all used magic and gave him a healthy body.

your second explanation is what i feel could be the most accurate. We hear lots of stories of mythological people being put together as clay and then being brought to life, so maybe it's something like that.

I like the idea of each mother just giving birth to a piece of Heimdall. Like 1 had the left arm 2 had the right arm 3 had the left leg 4 had the right leg 5 had the torso 6 had the head 7 had the hands 8 had the feet 9 had the soul

I wager all nine mothers fused into one larger woman to carry Heimdall, and once they gave birth, they unfused into their separate bodies again. Kinda like Twinrova from Ocarina of Time, but with 9 instead of 2.

The reason why there is no canonical answer is because there really is none, nor a canon at all for that matter. a mythology is all just stories told from person to person and stories change slightly with each telling. Because the main conflict and result of that characters actions are more important than the finer details, like who their mother is. when someone writes it down it's more of a snapshot of that character in that moment in history, and that's going to differ the further down the line it goes Look at the bible, that's what everyone refers too when it comes to Christianity so you can't skrew it up that easily cause you can fact check yourself, the Norse people didn't have that luxury, that's why there's so many different people saying "no that story is wrong, it's actually like this" because that's the version they heard. There's no real correct answer so There's no real canon to any mythology, it's basically one big Wattpad fanfiction explaining why lightning happens.

I think heimdall tried to explain gene splicing to the norse, and he was just like "fuck it, it's magic" also, he has 9 different mothers cuz the number 9, and cuz each of his mothers is from a different realm, 1 from each. So that he has ties to and can see and hear in all 9 realms as well as travel to these places
