Hey buddy, I really appreciate the video! Have you heard about T-Studs? I essentially want to combine the T-Stud framing method with the Hempcrete build. I think these two can complement each other and help drive the cost down while improving insulation and structural integrity. Specifically, the build would be on a round house. Similar to that if a Yurt but with more structural strength and superior insulation. Can you think of potential downsides of combining these two methods?

If it's antimicrobial then it wouldn't be good to use it like sawdust because you want them to breakdown into soil. I could be wrong! Don't we want the Bering for our anus to compost?
@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks

Are you talking about using the hemp hurds for bedding? Because you wouldn't want your hempcrete walls to decompose. When you use the hemp hurds for bedding they will soak up the urine and poo and they will brake down into compost.

Interesting. Steel I beams for vertical and horizontal skeleton, stack blocks between. Additives to quicken drying time? Portland would be faster? Yes? Greater compression strength too? Cut Channels into wall for electrical and pecs line?
@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks
3 жыл бұрын
I don't know if adding additives would be the answer for faster drying times. Most additives will make the wall more brittle and cause cracking. Portland cement can be used but it will degrade the insulation properties and weaken the wall. Yes, Portland cement will dry faster, but you will be left with a subpar wall. The binder being used now is a proprietary blend is known as “Fifth Element” and it doesn't contain any cement, sand or hydraulic lime. It was specially formulated for use in conjunction with hemp hurds and water to produce a 100% natural hemp insulation.

Thanks for the awesome video! I’m curious about the use of it in a framed wall. In one example, the studs were completely surrounded by the hempcrete, no wood is exposed to air. Is there danger of moisture rotting the wood, since moisture will be passing through the hempcrete.I live in Ontario where winters get cold and I’m thinking we’d need 18inch thick walls. Any recommendations?
@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks
4 жыл бұрын
From what I have seen and read the wood inside the hempcrete walls will not rot. The hempcrete allows moisture to go through but it does not allow it to condense into liquid form. Most all hempcrete walls today use the studded method because of the extra strength it adds. There is even a company that makes pre-made blocks of hempcrete using wood to connect them together.

Could you recommend a starting ration of lime to portlant cement? I am in Canada and don't seem to be able to find metakaolin. Thank you for your video!
@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks
2 жыл бұрын
A good place to start would be 25% Portland Cement to 75% lime, but it's not ideal. The ideal mix would be 80% lime to 20% Metakaolin or 70% lime to 30% GGBS (Ground-granulated blast-furnace slag). The reason PC is not recommended is the set time and possibilities of bio growth in the hempcrete. If you live in a hot/dry climate it wouldn't really matter because the PC would dry fast enough, but most of us in the US and Canada don't have such conditions.
