Awesome and thank you for providing real tech information on the failure of the unit. I have a 2013 GTS and it has a bad transfer case. The dealer confirmed that a replacement is needed. Porsche has extended the warranty to 10 years and unlimited mileage but having purchased a 2013 its over the ten years so I am not sure what to do.

Bought a 2016 Cayenne used from the local dealer as a certified vehicle. So glad I did as the transfer case did the skipping issue with the front tires during tight turns. They replaced it under the warranty and total cost was $3400, not $5000 as another commenter mentioned. That was two years ago in 2020. If these transfer cases are failing due to chain stretch and oil contamination, then change the oil every year. The transfer case only takes 0.7 liters of fluid. Ravenol sells the fluid. I bought the fluid this week to replace.

I have a 2012 base Cayenne . I was getting some shudder from the transfer case on light acceleration . Brought it to my shop had them change the fluid in it and that fixed the issue ( it’s been a year since and have had no issues )I have a 2012 civic that I never changed the transmission fluid and it had what they call torque converter shudder . I had 130k on it changed the fluid and it fixed the problem . I think a lot of people maybe not be changing the fluids like they should . Maintenance is huge with any automobile and even more important with higher performance ones .

Thank you for taking the time to explain this issue and show how a professional makes it right. There is so much misinformation out there, it is a pleasure to hear from someone who does this for a living, and does it well! I am considering buying a used Cayenne, would you consider creating a buying guide and quick rundown of common problem areas?

CoPilot said that 2011 year model is even worse. It has had the same number of complaints from customers, but these are more severe than those in the 2004 model. Overheating has reportedly occurred at only 15,000 miles, as well as a complete engine failure at under 40,000. Premature brake wear is another known issue, potentially happening as early as 21,000 miles and costing $3,000 to fix. Overall, we recommend avoiding the 2004 and 2011 year models because of the unnecessary stress they’ll give you that other models won’t. My question is after fix the above issues. Do the issues come out again and again ? You know that 2011 vehicles must be over 100000km, even more like 200000km 😂 Thanks

Did they actually update the replacement transfer case with more robust parts other than relocating the vent tube or just replace it with the same problematic case that was installed on all 958s and 958.2? I have a 2015 958.2, Turbo (4.8 liter twin turbo) that I purchased 15 months ago with 39K miles. At roughly 46K miles, I wasn't exactly sure if I was having the known transfer case issues, but mentioned it to the Porsche dealership and without argument they replaced under warranty. The total job for a consumer would cost around $5000 - $5,500. That's $2700 for the transfer case and the rest $$$ is for replacement and coding all at the dealership. I just want to know as I'm getting close to paying this vehicle off by the end of the year with nearing the 50k mark on miles (49,900 now), will this become a problem again? I've instituted a transfer case fluid change roughly every 10K, but trying to determine if this Cayenne is going to be a future money pit? Love the vehicle and do lot of my own maintenance, like the brakes, tires, filter, etc (I have a lot fancy Snap On tools and friends), but still look for reliability. Are the alternators on this vehicle reliable, because I think I need to drop the engine out the bottom in order to change it and other things like that??? Great video explaining some of the problems of the transfer case. I always go to the Porsche techs and pass the service managers. I work on my vehicles so I want to talk to those who work on them too...Generally I'm the dealerships worse customer. One final question regarding transfer cases...Do you know if the newer 2019 platform has corrected this problem with transfer cases? I'm trying to research everything including the newer 4.0 engine being used which is a reverse flow design much like BMWs 4.4 (which is garbage) and want to know with turbos in the valley of the engine, should we expect to see valve stem seals, guides and other internal components getting cooked by the turbo heat like BMWs V8s? Thank you again. G

I've been recently looking at purchasing a 2015 to 2018 Cayenne S or Turbo. I drove a 2015 Turbo a few days ago and liked it pretty well. I know of the Cayenne transfer case issue and the 10 year extension, but have not researched it. I keep telling myself to buy a CPO vehicle from a Porsche dealership, but the one I drove was at a Chrysler/Jeep store. I understood that the 2-year CPO program does not cover maintenance items (oil changes, brakes, tires, etc.), but I thought that it would cover something like the transfer case problem at 100% with the "no deductible" feature and 0$ out of pocket cost. I was assuming/hoping that it would be the same for an air suspension repair. Am I completely wrong here? Like I said, I haven't checked in to it. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
