I am so glad you found that helpful. I have been testing it with my product review videos. I first started it on my how to but it didn't seem that well accepted. Thank you so much for the feedback!

Hey, just in passing, it’s pronounced DELVE, like SHELVE, not DEVEL. It’s named after its inventor, Tom DelVecchio. I bought mine as a One Time Tool when they first offered it in 2015. That aluminum version stays in my apron as it is extremely versatile! After watching your video, I realized that (A) This is now a production item; (B) It now has a stainless steel version and (C) The stainless version is available in a 6” size. So I just ordered a 6” myself with a delivery date of June 9, 2021. Hope you enjoy yours, as it combines features of about 10 different Woodpeckers tools in one. I think that it is one of their most useful and versatile tools, and you will find a lot of use for both sizes. P.S. The mini square is really useful too, especially for checking square on tiny projects, but more so for checking square on chisels and hand plane blades.

All the engraving is done with a precision laser, also the holes for the pencil are 9mm. I have several Woodpeckers tools and have had no problems using the supplied 9mm pencil.

Thanks for the comment and info. I must just not be using the 9mm pencil correctly or figured out the best way as it in't going well for me. After I filmed the video I did a bit more research on the markings and I too found out how they engraved them and it sounds like quality. I have been using this tool a lot lately and it has been wonderful, worth every penny!

When you used the cheap pencil you flipped the square, and pulled the square more with the base than the pencil. When you used the woodpeckers pencil, it appears that you tried to pull the square with pencil (in the hole), which the lead does not have the strength to move the square. Instead moving the square by your hand on the base firmly against the wood - not by pulling the square with the pencil. Try this.... Position the square like you did for the cheap pencil in the video. Holding the base of the square with your left hand, like you did in the video. With your right hand holding the pencil Before putting the pencil in hole, first get the right grip on the pencil. In front of the leading edge of the hole side, hold the pencil vertically, gripped by your thumb tip and first three fingers tips. With the third finger, side of its tip on the wood. While holding the pencil vertically, directly in front of the leading edge, look to see if you have enough lead extended, while in this position, for the pencil metal tip to be above the square thickness, exposing enough lead. But not too much above, about 1/16 inch or so. Next having verified that you have enough lead exposed by that process, still holding onto the pencil with your thumb and top three fingers, place the pencil lead into the hole. Your third finger should be on the leading edge, and on the top of square surface, and on the metal tip pencil at the same - as the soft skin of your finger conforms to the contour of all three. Keep your third finger tip on the leading edge AND resting on the wood, so that you third finger will support the pencil the whole time - as you move the square forward toward toward your finger tip resting on the wood. Move the square forward with your off hand (left hand), keeping the base firmly against the reference edge of the wood. Don't use the pencil to try to drag the square along. Using that technique, you can draw hole after hole after hole, without the lead breaking off in the hole. Thumb and three fingers.

I would be hesitant about taking the aluminum base off, those are carefully calibrated at the factory to be 90deg. Taking it off will screw that up

The pencil has a sliding sleeve to reinforce and protect the lead. It will slide back as you use the pencil, if you hold the pencil perpendicular to the surface. And, holding it perpendicular is critical to having a consistent line width.. And, checking the square for 45-degrees by checking it to a cut made with your miter saw is kind of silly. The square will be at 45. Because it is built there. The saw has adjustments to get it to 45, so it could easily be out of adjustment.

If you stick the lead into a snug hole and wiggle, yeah, it will break the lead. Put your right hand closer to the base, so you wiggle less. Yeah, cheap pencil is loose and allows more wiggle room. But more wiggle room means less accuracy. So if you want accuracy, you have to learn to be steadier. On the note, you can buy 0.9mm mechanical pencil with metal tip support. It won’t let u wiggle. Then again if you wiggle so much, it will break the metal tip. Then nothing can really help u.

Philip Miller Oh yeah me too. These are the woodworkers’ golden standard. I still kept my cheap triangle that messed me up as a reminder. As for pencil, I recommend Rotring or Pentel GraphicGear1000. Pentel has the retractable metal tip, so it maybe better for you.

Get a better mechanical pencil. The tapered tip (especially on the cheap one) is the problem. The Pentel GraphGear 1000 automatic drafting pencil is excellent and has some great features unlike other mechanical pencils.

Sorry, but this is a pointless and utterly useless review. It completely misses the point of the DelVe square. Focusing on the pencil and its lead is beyond absurd, especially given that the Woodpecker's mechanical pencil was included merely as a complimentary bonus only to the purchasers of the 2-square combo sets. Additionally, Mr Miller would also do well to review his Bosch Owner's Manual on the proper technique for cutting on a sliding compound miter saw. Mr Miller has some good and useful content on his channel. Thankfully, this is not representative.

I see the Woodpeckers fanboi's are out en-force defending fair criticism. 1. The pencil + lead are fair game for criticism. They're included with the kit, made/endorsed by them, and has their name on it. If it's not intended to be used w/ the squares, don't include *inside the same case* AND they should say so. If they can print directions how to use a mech pencil, they can say why it will/won't work w/ squares. 2. Nice dig at his miter saw cutting technique, without offering helpful info to improve. To be clear, you're criticizing pulling the blade through the cut vs pushing. He may well have intended to do it to reduce tear-out on the MDF so comparing to the square would be easier visually. Who knows. But at least give helpful criticism, hate with no advice in the name of *feedback* doesn't make you a smart woodworker, it makes you a jerk. Do better.
