10:35 how on earth is a 2.25 GAA and a .928 SV% a disappointing season? Sure, his record wasn't great, but it's not his fault his team couldn't get him any goal support. For comparison, Vasilevskiy won the Vezina with a 2.40 GAA and a .925 SV% while playing for the best team in the league! Edit: Pretty much the only reason he didn't win the Vezina that year was that Carey Price went god mode and had a 1.96 GAA and a .933 SV% that year!
@Actionronnie

Hockeys a weird sport for stats. Probably his best stats for avg/sv% that season. But as long as a goalie gets wins, that stat will hide or gloss over worse avg/sv% seasons.
@bensedg04
4 жыл бұрын
Actionronnie yeah it sucks that a lot of people think that way. The best stat for goalies is SV%, as both GAA and wins are team stats. I'm a goalie myself, and I always hate when guys with great SV% but poor GAA and a bad record get snubbed from the Vezina conversation because there's nothing they can do about the record if their team doesn't help him out with goals or with defence. For example, goalie A could let in 3 goals on 35 shots, and goalie B could let in 6 goals on 70 shots, and they would both have a .914 SV%, but goalie A would be praised as great, and goalie B would be labeled as horrible, even though they have the same SV%, and I'd even argue that goalie B would be more impressive as it's hard to have that much endurance to keep up with that amount of shots
@Actionronnie
4 жыл бұрын
@@bensedg04 Even sv% can be skewed. I'm not into analytics or whatever it is called, but goalie A could face 35 soft shots from the blue line and be called great. And goalie B could face 10 breakaways and be subpar. I'm a Jets fan and Hellebuyck was voted as a mid season vezina winner by the PHWA, and ppl are like why. He's only leading in shutouts and shots faced. But the quality of shots he is being pepperd with is the reason he they voted for him at the halfway point.
@bensedg04
4 жыл бұрын
Actionronnie yeah I know what you mean. I'm a leafs fan and at the beginning of the year with Babcock we took lots of shots, but few from dangerous spots. Now with Keefe, we're still taking lots of shots, but higher quality ones and it's showing. The only issue is that our goalies have a .855 or something like that when we lose in January, and a .920 when we win. Also our 2 best defencemen are injured but our goalies in January have been the main cause of the issues.
@pilotamurorei

The Flyers fired the goalie coach that helped him turn his career around because the coach raised concerns about the team overworking Steve. The man played essentially the entire months of February and March before the series against the Capitals. Mason was just gassed after nearly singlehandedly dragging that team to the playoffs. Then, the Flyers extended Neuvirth, who at the time of that extension had the worst numbers in the NHL, before extending Mason. Dude got rightfully pissed and bounced.

Mase was a good goalie for the Flyers (the team I support). The trouble he had while working with the Flyers is the lousy defensemen playing in front of him. The Flyers franchise has been brutally bad with assembling good defensemen, although there are some good prospects in the system now (thanks to the drafting record of former GM Ron Hextall). I feel bad for Mase for the way things went for him with the Flyers, but I wish him the best of luck in his new career.

At 10:50 you mention it being a sub par year for Mason. Statistics state otherwise. A post .92 save and sub 3 gaa is respectable numbers for a goalie. Sure his win loss was bad(ish?), but it's a team sport, not necessarily him. Edit:His stats the very next year were almost exactly the same( actually a pinch worse save, slightly better gaa) as the season you called bad but because he has 5 more wins it's a better season? Back to my point, team sport. Goalies are not godly creatures that break teams especially when they perform above the curve. I'm sorry, but as a flyers fan , and someone who didn't particularly love the past decade of Philadelphia hockey barring 2010-12 you gotta put some of that on them.

MORE REALISTIC RECAP: 2008-2009: Had a stellar rookie season with 10 shutouts, .916 SV% & 2.28 GAA, helped CBJ get to the playoffs for the first time and was a Vezina finalist, but did his team no favours against Detroit 2009-2010: Mason’s play dropped off and he was a bad goaltender, CBJ miss with a losing record 2010-2011: Mason posts identical stats, but the Blue Jackets as a team played slightly better, but still miss the playoffs 2011-2012: Mason posts the worse season of his career with an .894 SV%, a higher-than-3 GAA, and the Blue Jackets finish dead last. 2012-2013: After struggling to start the season, Mason is traded to the Philadelphia Flyers. After the trade, Mason recovers his old form, but despite a late-season surge, they miss the playoffs. Seeing Mason as their goalie, they use a compliance buyout on Ilya Bryzgalov. 2013-2014: Mason posts good statistics with a .917 SV% & a 2.4? GAA, helping Philadelphia qualify for the playoffs despite a late season injury. After splitting the first 2 games of the series with Ray Emery (and his sub-par play), Mason takes over but, despite his amazing performance (his SV% of .939 led all goalies who played at least half his team’s games that postseason), the Flyers fall in 7. 2014-2015: Mason posts arguably the best statistical season of his career with a sparkling .928 SV% & 2.25 GAA despite spending some time on IR. Despite his Vezina-calibre year, the Flyers miss the playoffs with a godawful win-loss record. (Similar case: Cory Schneider that same year) 2015-2016: Mason takes a little step back but still posts respectable numbers with a .918 SV% & a 2.51 GAA, fuelled by a late-season surge and helping Philadelphia qualify for the playoffs alongside Michal Neuvirth’s better numbers. Come playoff time against the Caps, Mason enjoys godawful statistics in the first 3 games, with special mention going to Game 3 where he gave up 5 power play goals, leading fans to throw wristbands on the ice (the game in question was a memorial night for their deceased founder Ed Snider). This led to the Flyers to switch him out for Michal Neuvirth, who only allowed two goals in three games despite the team getting virtually no goal support in Game 6, eliminating them from playoff contention. 2016-2017: Following a bad first half to the season in spite of a 10 game winning streak in November-December largely due to their team play, Mason, despite being injured for much of January-February, recovers his play, but is unable to save their playoff race. 2017-2018: Mason, thanks to his poor play in his first and only season in Winnipeg, loses the net to Connor Hellebuyck, where he spends much of the year on IR due to concussions. The Jets, riding off the back of Hellebuyck’s success, make the playoffs and cruise to the Conference Finals, falling to the Vegas Golden Knights in 5. After the season, the Jets traded Mason to the Montreal Canadiens as a salary dump, but Montreal elected to terminate his contract. After a lack of interest in him, he took up a role as a coach for the Oakville Rangers, ending his playing career
