People think this dance is supposed to be sexy. Gwen Verdon, as good as she was, could do stripper pole sexy - if she wanted. But that's not the character. Lola is a demon. So all of those weird things, the baby voice, the blatantly not-sexy movements, the awkward gamboling, the egyptian dance, the whipping - think of that as a demon trying to act human, trying to act sexy, and failing miserably because she just doesn't understand humans, even though she's had thousands of years of experience. Her power is to get what she wants, to seduce, but not because she knows how to do it on human terms. That's what all these other Lola's I've watched on KZitem have missed. She's not a human. She's a demon.

+P. Barnum In the original book, Lola had been human and was an ugly old maid who sold her soul to the devil to become irresistibly sexy. She got Applegate to let Joe go by also giving up her own transformed persona and she was changed back into an ugly old maid at the end. Based on that original concept of Lola, it's kind of weird to see her transformed into a silly cartoon onstage. You have to wonder if the audience at the time of the musical's release was more comfortable with a cartoon sexy demon than a realistically seductive woman.
@johnbuffington5488
9 жыл бұрын
+P. Barnum Yes, Lola is a demon, yet she once was a quite ugly human being who sold her soul centuries ago to become physically attractive and irresistible. Considering this was the facially-ordinary Gwen, who could pull off a near strip-tease with terrific dancing skills, it's all about Joe's subconscious love for his wife, versus a seductress whose man-manipulating skills had suddenly become outmoded. Thus, her affection for him to the point she was willing to betray the Devil and return to her former state.
@johnbuffington5488
9 жыл бұрын
+yootuba You're right on-point that this was a time when a realistically-seductive woman couldn't tempt an extremely attractive man like Tab Hunter. Gwen's dance was indeed cartoonish, yet only due to the fact she was out-of-touch with what stimulates a man. In that regard, her methods were outmoded; however, the sight of Lola wriggling out of that lacy black lingerie would have been enough for me ;)

Gwen Verdon was such a brilliant dancer, and this is one of her all-time most memorable performances. This dance is such a hilarious spoof of a femme fatale. It takes major talent to be sexy and funny at the same time. (And what a remarkable figure she had! Reminds me of Vera-Ellen's.) Tab Hunter also did a fabulous job in this scene as the good boy whose innocence & loyalty protects him from Lola's wiles.
@KDMDiz

Freedom--agreed! I was just reading some more information on the dance included in this film clip: Bob Fosse won a Tony award for Choreography for the stage version of Damn Yankees in 1956. This clip is from the film version of 1958. Interestingly, for this particular dance, Fosse choreographed some suggestive hip movements for the stage version that were considered too risqué for the general American public of that era, so Verdon simply pauses where those movements would have been.
@Victor1930

Unfortunately the aspect ratio is off from the original in the clip so everything, including Gwen Verdon's figure, is stretched vertically. She was no Vera Ellen, but much more curvy and full-figured than you see here. Not a Mae West, by any means, but not a stick-figure either. Still, a beautiful, clean clip. Thanks for posting!

The "type of music" is the traditional Tango--here (and in "the old cartoons," as intrinsically an arch, sternly adamant and focused seduction dance, a musical "straight man") played for comic effect, as danced by just one of a potential couple, the seductress, to ensnare an innocent victim.

For those of you who have complained about this dance as "seduction"--her movements are both created and performed to express much more than a realistic seduction scene. It's about who she is, how she is feeling about herself and how she is feeling about him--she is exulting in her absolute conviction of her absolute power and she simultaneously wants him and patronizes him in what she sees as his weakness before her power. So strong is her conviction that this is more of a victory dance than an actual seduction. She is also a predator stalking her prey, a cat toying with her "meal" before she pounces. It is funny, disturbing and mesmerising all at once.

She's really an amazing dancer, very dynamic. The "voluptuous" stuff is not so believable because she/they have allowed her not an ounce of bodyfat in this picture, but her gifts of physical mimicry are stunning -- if she thinks "cat," she's as catlike as can be, or if she throws a little quote of bullfighting in there, it rings clearly in her dance. Turns out the intensity was real: she was falling in love with the choreographer (the incredibly talented Bob Fosse) on this movie, and married him two years later... and yes, she *is* a cat fancier.. well, that showed in her dancing!

I have this odd assortment of CDs from a store in which I worked that went out of business, mostly compilations. "Great Women of Broadway" has Gwen's version of Lola; I had never seen Damn Yankees before, and wanted to know what was going on in the song. But I didn't want to hear someone else's version, and it finally dawned on me tonight to look here to see if Fosse's vision had ever made it to the big screen. How enjoyable! The dance is a howl! The song is funny enough, but the dance, by far, makes the scene. There is currently (Spring 2015) a commercial for an expensive ice cream bar that uses this song, but whoever sings it doesn't have the flirty, girlish, teasing voice of Verdon, it's much deeper and aggressive, and not at all appropriate for the part. Advertising fail.

Yeah, well this was before the era of botox, fillers, lip injections, butt implants and the ridiculous bevy of surgical procedures available to turn oneself from a human being, as poor Ms. Verden was, into a temple to plasticity, as are most of today's "great beauties".

Sarah Vaughn wrote this song....are you high as a kite? Be honest. "Whatever Lola Wants is a popular song, sometimes rendered as "Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets". The music and words were written by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross for the 1955 musical play Damn Yankees."

The original comment was Gwen was quote "unattractive", that I will debate for I think inner beauty shines stronger than the exterior. @CoutureaFerocia
