Great videos! I've come across your videos and haven't stopped watch yet! Hahaha These are addicting. I've been a Machinist for 10 years now in NW Houston, and as a child, I grew up in my grandfather's basement, which your garage reminds me of, only more modern machines. I've worked for Halliburton, Baker Hughes, Weatherford, and VAM USA. Epic set-up (Man Cave) you've created!

Thats cool to know how much you can get into a tiny space. I like the idea of those heavy thick wall foam panels to keep noise down and keep the heat out. Its a major issue for me being in Oz, last week it hit 35C (95F) you just cant think at that temp. So will look at doing a window aircon unit and the panels. Plus sort out my air lines. I have done that with larger videos. I generally us a external solid state drive to store the video content. Than edit and produce that to the external drive run it thru Handbrake to reduce the size to about 2/3 and optimize it for KZitem. Than drag it to the desktop for upload. I have found it takes longer to upload directly from the external drive for some reason.

it might be caching the video in ram as it reads it and perhaps you are low in ram. It should not be slower on an SSD.

Assuming you're OS is running from a M.2 SSD and when you move a file to your desktop, it copies it. Transfer speeds to/from a M.2 are 3x as fast as a standard SSD. Especialy when compared to a external SSD. After reviewing your laptop specs, your bottle neck is most likely with the external SSD. Always use your USB 3.0 slots as well when doing large file transfers. I just finished my first PC build in July 2016. So, machining and computers go hand in hand LOL.

I'm surprised he told us that to be honest. None of us on KZitem needed to know. Then again, he already said it was his home garage shop, and to somebody whose job it is to care about some bylaw, happens to land on either one those videos, they can be a dick later, and force action if they wanted to bother with it. The way I see it, as long as the neighbours aren't complaining about noise. It's a non issue.
@tyhuffman5447
6 жыл бұрын
He may just assume there is a bylaw, he looks and acts the honest type. I'm sure if there were such a bylaw it would be an honest mistake. Maybe something like no home business, but this is clearly a hobby. I'm sure everyone here would agree that the only thing those machines are good for is as a play toy for an old machinist. They may appear impressive to a nosy neighbor but we all know that those are just play toys. Not that I would mind having a few play toys myself but only for hobby.

Better to live in places without such onerous laws. When you own a property and they make so many rules that you can't use it as you see fit, do you really own it or do the rule-makers? And when you have to borrow 80% of the money to "buy" it, do you really own it or does the bank? Home ownership is a LIE if you live in a high - cost area with too many rules and no rights. Time to move.

Thanks its nice to hear a encouraging comment. I am trying with my videos to show things that aren't being shown (as far as I can tell) on KZitem. I know my content is more orientated to people who machine for a living not to the mas viewers. I would encourage people to comment good or bad so I can know better what to show. Some of this is kind of boring but if some one is trying to learn or just wants to know maybe it could help. There are very few KZitem videos showing more commercial or not hobbyist (Please I'm not saying anything wrong with being a hobbyist) type of information. I guess they want to keep it to themselves.

Mark Spencer , I have been very impressed with this little lathe. I have turned parts and held tenths. I am running it on 230 volt single phase. It doesn't have tons of power on single phase. It also only turns 1800 RPM max. It would be nice to have more speed. All that being said I like the machine. It will thread at its maximum RPM without a problem. Look at my video on the GoPro mount. 1/4-20 thread at 1800 rpm into a small thread relief/shoulder no problem. ID threads to a shoulder no problem.
@chrisrokz9005

The current shop I am employed at has one for doing mold cores. Yes it can hold tenths, but you need to take light cuts. Our tooling situation could be much better, which would help for speeds and feeds. Set up your machine with good tooling. The only weakness I have found is thermal stability, AC makes a huge difference.

Hi,love your workshop and machines. Are your Haas machines 3 phase and if so how are you running them on single phase please.Have you retired them ?wish to know as I want to buy a Haas Minimill ,which as I’m in the Uk is only 3 phase . Any help would be much appreciated. Kind regards Mike
@EdgePrecision
6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mike. These little Haas machines can run on either 3 phase or single phase 230 volt supply. I am running them in my garage on 230 volt single phase power. When running on single phase I think it reduces the power of the spindle drives somewhat. I don't know the exact amount though. The machines run very well on the single phase you cant really tell the difference from 3-phase power. All of the functions perform the same. I really like these little Haas machines. Of course they don't have the power and rigidity of my large machines at work but they can do small parts very well.

There is a tap chart located on the wall behind your laptop - who makes that? It looks like it has everything all in one place. I have a good friend of mine who is an old school CNC guy - he's not a Haas fan because of the linear rails. Having used the TL-1 and the TM-1 and space was not an issue - would you go with Haas again? Great videos! Keep up the excellent work!

The compressor is in a sound room. It makes very little noise even in the garage. You cant hear it outside. I also sound proofed the walls. have you ever run both machines at the same time (curious whether there would be a power issue like you started talking about)
@EdgePrecision
7 жыл бұрын
Yes I have run both machines at the same time. I haven't had a problem. Most of the time when a machine is running it doesn't draw very much power. I think you would only run into a issue if both machines were pulling full power in a cut at the same time than maybe. The house has a 200 amp service and my dryer and water are heated with gas. The only other big power draw is the air-conditioning. There is also a 5hp 230 volt air compressor. Off the top of my head I think these machines are rated at about 30 amps full load, that's probably on 3 Phase power though.

The lower panel is the one for the shop area. There wasn't any extra breaker slots in the houses box. I needed to add more breakers for the equipment in the garage. A lot of houses in our neighbor hood have electric close dryers electric water heaters and electric stoves. In our house that is all done with natural gas. So the house has a 200 amp service plenty of extra power to run the equipment in the garage. In fact during one of the frequent hurricanes that come thru Houston we were without power for two weeks. Everyone was coming to our house for morning coffee and meals. We could cook and still heat water on the stove. Although I did mention to my next door neighbor that he could heat his water on his gas barbecue. I guess he didn't think of that.

I'm not sure what you are asking. A layout of machines? I don't know what a Smithy Granite 1324 is. What is it?

Amazing how responsible, successful adults have to "ask permission" from their "parents" i.e. neighbors to do what they want in/on their own property and have to be "sneaky" if their "parents" say no, isn't it?

Agree 100%, I keep a super low profile because some people have nothing better to do than mind everyone else's business, my shop is purely for myself and my channel subscribers/viewers but the normal automatic presumption is always to jump to a conclusion of something sinister like "making a living". Sorry for the rant but just as a point, when I was a kid in the 60's about 50% of the kids I went to school with Dad had a business and worked from home as a plumber, carpenter, electrician, etc, gradually that number has diminished, so much for "freedom to pursue happiness", especially if what you're doing doesn't impact anyone..

Hello Peter, i want to asked if you would buy the hass tm1 again? Are you happy with the Spindle Rpm? I would like to buy a "Tool Room" mill with half enclosure because it takes less room in the garage. At work i have the big DMG CNC's an at home i am afraid to get fed up with to little options on the machine etc. I would like to hear your opinion. Thanks . Greatings from Germany

I like this machine. I would think about the enclosure though. Especially if you plan on running flood coolant. I wish mine had one. It wasn't a available option when I purchased it. As for spindle Rpm. I don't know what is available now but mine has a max speed of 4000 Rpm. It would be nicer to have more on this small machine. That said I would rather have low end power than high speed. You can do anything you want with the lower speed it just may take longer. People put a lot of emphasis on high speed now days. It often isn't necessary or even required. If you don't have 3Phase power the machine will run on single phase. But keep in mind it will have less torque on single phase. other than that everything works the same. If you are buying new get the probing option it is worth the money that Haas charges. And Haas's/Renishaw custom macros the have written for the Haas really work good. As a side note I own a Renishaw Ball Bar. I have run the measurement on my machine with it. It does very good and mills round circles with less than .0005" error. Depending on what you are doing. I think this is a good little machine. I don't know in your area but Haas also has good customer support if you have a problem. This can be very important if your doing paying jobs. Yes I would buy this machine again.

Thanks allot Peter, that you have taken your time to answer so precisely. It is a good argument with with low speed an high tourque. In Germany nearly every House has 3 Phase 400v Power, about 50-63 Amps each Phase normaly. Haas is not so comment in Germany , but avaible for good price for used an new machine. I am looking at Mini mill 1 too. Moostly with 6000 rpm avaible. The TL1 and TL2 are mostly sold in Europe without enclosure an without toolchangers. I don`t want to miss a changer on a machine. Keep going Peter, hope you will make allot more great videos.
