She has never at any point of time in her life pre 1998 (when her vocal surgery went bad) been primarily a movie artist. It's just that all her releases like Mary Poppins, Emily, Sound of Music, Hawaii, lined up one after the other but she had been shooting for these movies for years all while earning her bread and butter primarily from stage. As she explained herself, by the time Mary Poppins released, she had already completed the shooting of both Emily and Sound of Music.

This was true for the middle and upper class but do not see only one side if the coin. There was institutional racism, segregation, a cold escalation of world powers boiling and a much more conservative society. We are only able to see the best, the most fortunate part of societies in these old television treasures. The postwar economic prosperity still ran high in 1960. I do not mean to offend or embitter a sweet memory but just want to express a balanced view.

Dame Julie Andrews was magnificent in Broadway's "My Fair Lady", but lost the movie role of Eliza to Audrey Hepburn, but won Oscar's Best Actress in her first movie role as Mary Poppins, whom Walt Disney selected when he saw Julie as Guinevere in Broadway Camelot and when Rodgers & Hammerstein saw Julie as Mary Poppins, she was the perfect choice to play her most beloved role of all, governess Maria in "The Sound of Music". (sorry for the run-on)
@kirsteni.russell5903

Even Audrey Hepburn thought Julie Andrews would be better as Eliza in "My Fair Lady," but the artistically brain dead Jack Warner threatened to give the role to Elizabeth Taylor if Audrey Hepburn didn't take it, so Hepburn took it. Also, Rodgers & Hammerstein had first seen Julie Andrews on Broadway, and they cast her in the title role of their version of CINDERELLA in its live television premiere in 1957.

Oh, you are right. I forgot about Julie Andrews as the original R&H's Cinderella. Did not know Liz Taylor was considered as the movie Eliza if Audrey did not accept.
