For the easy trail, how much ground clearance are we talking about? Would 8.5" be enough?

You would be fine on Bunce School Road, but you might have a hard time on the T-33 side trail

Not to contrarict airforce records or anything, but did you notice "capt. Mooney, pilot, 1956" scratched into the engine bell? I've been riding motorcycle up that trail and to the crash for decades. Thankyou for showing your respects, I always do the moment I spot the first bits of wreckage. I talked with a fella at the Wings over the Rockies museum about the crash some years ago, and he casually stated that a friend of the pilot purched some property in that area, and he offered to inspect it on his next flight. Came in low over the first ridge, but was too low to clear the second. Pancaked it. I remember the ground still black from the tires burning and the forrest just beginning to recover, even in 1989 when my dad first took me up there perched on the tank of his KTM.

It used to be more treacherous. I recognized some of the sheer faces you climbed. Imagine a small batch of G.I's doing that in deuce-and-a-halfs and jeeps when they built the road to get in there. But the engine bell scratching is on the exhaust housing, which somehow managed to stay close to the tail, while the rest of the engine rolled to the bottom of the ravine. There is also another trail, leading from one of the campsites that leads up to the top of a ridge that looks down into all of Ferncliff and Allen's. We used to call it "On Top Of The World". Took an hour on motorcycle, zig-zagging throught trees on game trails, but you knew when you got to the top. On one side, you stared straight at Mt. Meeker, and on the other you could see from Cheyenne, out into Nebraska, Kansas, and down into New Mexico on a clear day.

Just completed this T33 trail in a Suzuki Samurai, it is a fun trail and a great place to share for the next generation to see and learn from. My Suzuki is on stock suspension, no lockers, dimensional the same as most 1940s Willys/jeep CJ2A. If you want to see what it would have been like for the military to use vehicle to reach the site, find a buddy with a stock suzuki samurai. Honestly, trail was not difficult at all. I can see why these newer larger jeeps have issues on trails.

@@TrailTraveler Rain check for next season? Looking at my schedule its not likely this year that I will be out that way. I took off work specifically to do this trail today with my son before the seasonal closure and saw the weather is turning in the next few days.

OnX says short wheelbase only , would a Jeep Gladiator on 37" be able to do the T33 trail or is it too tight?

That "old military equipment" sone 60 yrs ago was more than likely "state of the art" equipment for that time period. :)
