I had a manager who addressed us for a meeting about punctuality one morning. One of my colleagues (Dave) who had been there for 12 years raised his hand and asked that the manager also follow the rules he's talking to us about. He pointed out that all our departmental incentives had been canceled while we still have the same expectations, other departments leave early on Fridays, yet we're being addressed over coming to our desks 5 minutes late. Also pointed out that this same manager goes on 1.5-2 hr walks around the office park for his 1-hr lunch break and takes several other breaks throughout the day. He stayed respectful and humble, and just explained that he wasn't trying to be 'that guy', but he knows we all notice and wants it to be fair. I was a temp at the time, along with one other guy. The next week, me and Dave were out of a job. The manager had hated me ever since I declined to laugh at his 'black jokes' like the other black people in the office would, and other people in the company had taken to coming to ME for questions and consultation. The other temp got to stay on of course. Turns out, the boss was told to let go of at least 2 people and now had all the ammo he needed to make his choice.

I treat my job as a business, which is what it is. Take it from someone who works in Human Resources at a big corporation: If you let people know, specifically higher ups, from the go that you’re not with the shits of personally fraternizing about your life at work, thinking your co-workers are “family” or even remotely trying to relate to them personally on any level, trust me half of the bullshit wouldn’t come w/ the garbage some ppl deal with. Separation of business and personal is really important. Realizing also that your job will NEVER be loyal to you, no matter the pay or tenure of sorts, will make your work life easier.

One of my favorite "quits" ever was when I was working at Kroger. I was an Assistant Customer Service Manager. We were in the pandemic. Overworked, underpaid, severely understaffed. I was in charge and had a line back to the coolers (literally entire length of the store). I was taking action to get someone else on Customer Service so I could get on register and burn through the line (I was the fastest and most efficient cashier so I knew that I needed to be out there instead). I was frantically counting tills in the accounting room so I could make that transition. Store Manager comes into the store and I hear him BANING on the accounting door "Where is Jeremy?! Where the F**K is Jeremy?!" I open the door. "I'm right here trying to get this..." Cut off, "YOU NEED TO BE OUT HERE DEALING WITH THIS... [expletives ensue]" ME: I am. That's what I'm trying to tell y-- HIM: You're hiding in the accounting room- ME: Ya know what? I fucking quit! Here's my badge. Here are my keys.. (I get in his face and say loud enough for ALL the cashiers down the line - and customers to hear) - You need to learn to respect your fucking employees. {walked out - as did many others} God that was fun. To this day, every time I go into that Kroger, EVERYONE asks me to please come back. I treated my employees with respect. I always punch up, never down.

Yup, that's me! I'm the one who gonna say something when I've had enough. Let the chips fall where they may, I'm gonna open my mouth and say what I have to. I'm not rude, I don't go off, but I get my point across whether they get mad or not.
